I heard on a news program at least in Tennessee that starting 01/01/06 DUI offenders will be required to work 3/8 hour shifts picking up litter on state highways wearing a orange vest on the back of vest stating (Iam A Drunk Driver) also be required to spend 24 hours in lockup. My ? is what do other states require of a 1st offense DUI conviction?

I'm in TN and I LOVE IT. I think it's a great idea. I'm not sure if that new law is an option. I think rather than doing 48 hrs jail time, they can elect to do 24 hrs on the road with the nice orange vest.

TN has not lowered much in DUI arrests since we lowered the BAC to .08%. We are still one of the worst states with drunk driving. I go to DUI court quite often and it is amazing to see how packed it is in Davidson Co (Nashville).

Hopefully this will start a trend for many states to follow.

Can get a 6 month sentence but never happens. can get 2000 euro fine but usually 1000. Can lose license upto 2 years, usually 1 year and they can request it back after 6 months if they have a reason (such as driving for work purposes) but all this is only on first offence.

Im all in favour of restorative justice, its not used enough in my opinion. I know in the UK people that urinate in public have to scrub it with a brush and bleach while the cops stand over them and make sure they do a good job. All this while people walk by laughing at them. Great idea!

Great idea, the ACLU will be filing it's lawsuit any day now.

Cruel and unusual punishment to embarass someone. Mark my words.

That's GREAT and all 50 States should do the same.

I personally like the states that have DWI plates. There was a proposal here in NY for DWI plates for repeat offenders but I don't think it ever went anywhere. Sure making them pick up trash serves the community but having to drive around with a plate that attract attention to you would either make the person think about driving or would at least give police an advantage in taking drivers who might do harm to themselves or others.

I think the DWI plates would be a great idea, but just like here, if they can't register a vehicle b/c of a suspended license, they register the vehicle in thier spouse's name, that of their elderly parents, or infant child. I could see that occuring if we had the DWI Plates.
