Some one tell me when NY is going to get off this Civ Ser thing. It's soon to cost them money. They along with Mass, and Cal have max age restrictions. Under this rule. Last year the Supreme court said that was a NO-NO. ( smith vs City of Jackson Miss.) Look at all the military people that are going some where else, when they retire. Even with age ext for military, you are cut off at 41. Which is a lot of potential military retires.

yea NY loses alot of people to other states because the hiring process here for both police and fire is long.

many people do not want to wait months to find out if they have a job or not.

Even the instructor in the academy stated that the age restriction is b/s. They are losing alot of good older candiates coming from the military. NY needs alot of changes.

very true. unfurtunatly change in this state is like pulling wisdome teeth.

Albany always has and will always be the worst statehouse in the nation really its a disgrace.

That's not true. You get to add your years in the military to the 35 age restriction. If you did 20 years in the service, you can be appointed until 55.

Civil service is complete bull****. Here's my experience with a department in South Carolina that I recently applied to. Sent my application in in late October. Recieved a call from them mid-November, had an appointment to take the written test, physical agility, fingerprints and board interview in 2 days. Completed those and they're doing my background right now.

I took a test in NY on December 3, haven't even gotten my scores yet. NY sucks, I'm outta here as soon as I get this job in SC.

What does civil service have to do with job security? It's unions that keep jobs safe, not civil service.

If you read, you can only add up to 6 years of military time, not all 20. This gives me a max age of 41 to apply and be hired. 1 year before I retire from the army. As to Job Security. It's only as good as the job.

Look in places outside of NY, then. You already live in NC...

well civil service can be good and bad the bad is it takes us over a year to hire one person.

bad is the city of rochester is short cops right now but because the hiring process takes forever here replacing them is slow.

I have friends who interviewed and were hired in Durham NC in 4 months that can never happen here.

In a lot of places ( I can't say for certainty NY) civil service laws help to keep jobs safe and they help to ensure that the Chief's friends don't get hired over a more qualified applicant. At least here, if a department wants to make things go quickly then can.

That is correct, before most New York Counties went full civil serve in 1993, the Sheriff's had full authority on handing out positions. This is epecially true with the postions of process server and court attendent in the early days when they didn't have academies. Times have changed, but the process needs to speed up.
