I had my first experience driving lights and sirens about 40 miles to an accident scene. I've heard it over and over that people become almost retarded when they see a cruiser behind them with lights and sirens. The experienced first hand the phenomenon yesterday. Although nothing bad happened, other than people either stopping in the middle of the road, putting their right blinker on but continuing to drive, or just somehow not seeing or hearing me and continue to drive, I took it as a good learning experience. I'm sure many of you have some good stories about this topic.

Wow, I think I'd go stir crazy listening to my siren wail for 40 miles! Most cities in NC aren't even 40 square miles. I think the longest chase I've been in was about 35 miles, most of them at 25-35mph while the suspect was driving on rims...and I was so ready to turn off that damn siren!

Do you guys have a limit on how long you can run the siren? When I was in the Navy, we couldn't run the siren longer than 15 minutes at a time due to OSHA recommendations.

No limits that I know of. VT only requires you to use your siren, "when needed", so it doesn't have to stay on all the time on code runs. The only time it is required statutorily is for police during pursuits (and that's only to meet the criteria for Attempting to Elude).

If we have a time limit, I was never told. Either that or my ears were ringing when they said it...

If we are running 'code', then we are required by policy to be running lights and siren unless the situation dictates otherwise for public safety (possible hostage situation, etc). If we run 'silent code' without the siren, then it is our responsibility to obey all traffic signals, per policy once again.
