I know we have someone who seems to be a recruiter from MDPD on here, so I have a question. How neccessary is Spanish? I DONT speak it, and am currently a student at USF in Tampa and a reservist in FHP. I would be interested in MD beacsue of all the supposed action and I love the south florida area, but how bad is it really crime wise? Say compared to a city like Tampa or even south st pete.
But what I really am curious is how big of an issue is the language barrier? Can an officer survive without speaking spanish there?

Spanish would help, but is by no means a requirement. I can not speak spanish, and get by ok. (It would be dependent upon which distict you are assigned.)
As far as "action" some of the districts are VERY busy, some of them are not nearly as busy.
I do not work for MDPD so I can not give you specifics. There are also numerous municipal agencies in the area hiring, so unless you have your heart set on MDPD you could try one of them too.

1) By no means am I a recruiter for MDPD (just answering questions to the best of my ability about the department), I am an analyst for the Economic Crimes Bureau @ MDPD
2) As far as spanish goes see APDSgt answer:
Spanish would help, but is by no means a requirement. Here in South Florida (Miami cause some how its all connected) for some reason or another the ratio of Spanish speakers is rationally bigger than non-Spanish speakers. (maybe cause we are surrounded by water) So do I think it would help.. yes Most definantly make the transactions alot smoother and it will keep you sane
3) Crime wise depends on what district or Bureau your at some are better than others (action wise)
4) I dont have any stats on Tampa or St Pete as far as crime goes but ..then again theres crime everywhere doesnt matter what PD you work for

Im a mdpd deputy, who doesnt speak spanish if that helps.. Some areas have alot of spanish population and if you cant speak spanish its hard, and you have to wait for a spanish speaking backup to arrive so you can handle your call. While other areas speak english and everything is fine.
As far as action.. there are two districts which are rough.. the rest are really just busy with lots of calls.

I think diff counties have diff budgets. like the county budget only have so much money set aside for police, public waste services, county workers etc ....and as far as the uniforms from what i was told its a history thing MDPD been wearing brown since they started the department way back when .... I'm not sure if thats the case mybe someone can shine so light on this topic ........ :)

I'm not too sure as far as the history on the uniforms but I do know the department does get fined every year for maintaining that color since technically the MDPD is the county's sheriffs office. They are the dual deputy sheriff / police officer. Same thing with the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office.
As far as your questions, Spanish is very helpful while working in the South Florida area, but by far it is not necessary. Last time we checked, the main language is English in this country, so don't fear not being able to get or do your job for not knowing Spanish. In MDPD, I know a lot of the FTO's will cover a little bit of LE-related Spanish for those who are new to the language.
With the crime numbers, Miami-Dade is quite a busy county. In addition to all the municipalities we have within, the county-wide call volume is quite large. Some areas are more service oriented while others are more crime-oriented. Even though we have our share of "action" persay, it is nothing compared to the way it used to be.
MDPD PCAS was right with the money question for MDPD and in the county both the Miami Beach Police Department and Coral Gables Police Department pay more.

I Work in central FL and what we start off making, we can live off. I know MDPD starts at 35000 do you guys feel that is enough for South FL for example housing and life style. Miami Beach PD start at 44000 is that one of those agencys that you have to know someone to get in.

No doubt the pay still sucks but you can still live off of it the best paying agency is Orlando PD 37000. In Central FL most agencys start at 33000 and most sheriff dept add 2% ontop of start salary for each year of experience prior LEO, Like Orange, Seminole, Osceola. But housing prices are still cheaper then S. FL and am sure property taxes are cheaper. My main question is do you guys feel you can live off what you make down there like buying a house and having a family.
If you dont mind me asking where in Central FL did you work.

the answer is no,
when i arrived in 86, prices were high, but stayed within in a
reasonable area, where a 98,000 2 bedroom house is now
a 450,000 or more house in ft lauderdale
if ya want new housing, ya better be married with a wife that works
or have room mate after room mate help with the bill's.
