When you find out after getting DL info that your boy is wanted out of some county and you are approaching the vehicle to take him in, what do you say?
Let's pretend he's wanted for failure to appear (common). I had this for the first time last week, and basically was like:
"Mr. Dude, can you step out of your car and come talk to me back here" (moving towards the trunk)
(once we steps back towards me)
"Did you know that you had court back when - " (and if they have already been served (which this guy had been) I just said .. Ok Sir, I'm going to need to take you down to the station. It could be an error, but we need to go down there just to be sure..
The guy was shady looking anyway, and i wasn't nervous but I was trying to play it cool the whole way, and actually it went fine until we got to the jail, which was not my problem.
Essentially, what do you say to people when it's time to go without them freaking out on you. (or less chance of them freaking out)
As little as possible. Keep them calm. Play it down. Make it sound as minor as you can and get them in handcuffs fast as I can. Hate to fight. You did well. You got his cooperation. You had and maintained control.

I dont know how things are done in your neck of the woods, but over here we have guys step out of the car and immediately pat them down first( especially if they're shady). Stick them in the back of the cage, then run their license. If they want to ask questions why they're in the back seat, tell them its cold or you're getting them out of traffic. Tell them they look like someone you're looking for. Tell them anything you want. At least now if the check returns with something, he's already in the back seat. I also dont like reapproaching a vehicle without searching the car or guy. Gives him too much time to think and plan.

Here, they'd pull some bulls*it on me like
Asshat Lawyer: "Why did you arrest my client before checking his license"
Me: "I didn't. I just placed him in the back of my patrol car"
Asshat Lawyer: "My client says you patted him down and threw him in the back of your patrol car."
Me: "It was cold."
Asshat lawyer: "My client was under the belief that he was under arrest at that time."
Me: "Your client would be wrong."
- and then it would go downhill from there.. that's how I see that going down here in the good ole' hippy liberal freakin idiotic part of Georgia that I'm in.

I was really just trying to find out how you all talk to people and which ways are more productive vs. counter.

Around here that would never fly. We make contact (for whatever reason), check identity and then, if there's a want or warrant, take them into custody. The only exception would be if I was looking for a specific person and was pretty sure I had him or her by visual inspection. If I cuffed and stuffed every driver I stopped for a traffic violation, I'd be having a heart-to-heart with the chief before long.

I agree with Sam. Nevermind. Nothing to see here.

In my 10-code, 10-95 means that I'm out at my home!
As a general rule-of-thumb, dispatch will always send a backup officer if they find a warrant on the dl check. Now that so many (except me) have mobile computers they have to call for thier own.
Most of my dept. will wait for that backup before inviting the offender the out of the car. We're quite populated here, backup is never more than a couple of minutes away.

When we stop somone and find out that they have a court day that they have missed and a warrant gets issued its a pretty quick stop. Blue lights, spot light, take down light, walk up to the vehicle with my hand on my firearm approach the operator and assume he/she is the owner who may have an outstanding warrant. Very nicely can they please exit the vehicle and explain to them why they were stopped and what happened to the court date that they did not attend.

Ide ask the person if they have had any other run in with the laws recently,if they say yes then I would go back to my cruser...run checks or what have you....come back and ask them if they could just step out for a moment...tell them I have to take them to the station,it might be a mistake, but we just have to clarify....ide tell them I need to handcuff them for my saftey and just briefly check them for weapons, then when there in the cage ill tell them they have some people looking for them.....In my opinion thats a safe way to handle it,but you tell me

Ahhh, if they have, they ain't gonna say yes. They all lie, all the time, even when the truth would work better!! Learn it, expect it, depend on it! ;)

I'd suggest becoming a certified police officer first. Wouldn't want you to have to deal with those pesky 'impersonating' or 'false imprisonment' charges. Might interrupt you finishing your coffee. ;)

We don't go past 10-86.
Sounds like you did good. Me, depends on the situation and whether I have back up or not.
