I was (half-jokingly) told by a LEO friend that "a good cop will never get wet or cold." Does the weather play any affect on your decisions to pull someone over? Everyone's human in the end.
Obviously I'm not looking for an excuse to speed in snow or rain, that's just stupid regardless. Just curious on your opinions.

NOPE, Ive made DUI arrests in about 10* blowing windy weather, Ive made traffic stops in snowy conditions. AS far as rain goes, we try not too ;) but sometimes people are just stupid enough to try your theory out.
WE dont like getting wet but stupidity and a blatant disrespect for the law will get you hammered any time of year.
P.S.-except at dinner time if someone was in court all afternoon... ;)

I work in the mountains of PA. It is very common to have lots of snow, right now we have about 18" of it. I pull people over all the time in the rain, snow, cold,etc... It beats having to do an accident report on them later.

I joke around with a lot of people with things like this. A good cop is never wet, cold, hungry, etc. The fact of the matter is it is a joke. Over the course of a carrer is Law Enforcement your going to be wet cold and hungry at some point. I will say I don't go out looking for traffic violators (running radar, hawking stop sings etc), but if I see a violation ( especially something more likely to cause a crash) I make the stop in the rain, snow etc.

Some cops learn how to avoid the rain and cold. I wouldn't neccesarily call them good cops. Someone else picks up the slack.

The worse the weather the less forgiving I am with citations. If I have to get cold and wet to make a traffic contact someone's getting a ticket.

If I have to make a traffic stop in the rain you are getting a ticket. If I have to make a traffic stop in the cold you are getting a ticket. You are also going to be getting out of the vehicle to get your copy of the citation. I get wet you get wet. I get cold you get cold.

Not that I'll ever admit to.
It depends on the severity of the violation. Reckless driving, yes. Seat belt violation, no.
In the opening post Falconwolf asks: I was (half-jokingly) told by a LEO friend that "a good cop will never get wet or cold...In actuality the remark goes like this...A good cop never gets wet, cold, pays full price for a meal or s**ts on his own time.

It is obvious to me then ...

... that I have never really known but a very few really "good cops", as most were pretty **** poor when judged against either of those standards, including myself.

I think the saying refers to the more experienced officers (hence the good cops) who can always seem to stay dry in a driving rain storm...We have one officer in our department who can stand in a friggin downpour for hours at an accident and not get his uniform wet....He has really good rain gear.

In rain we are often too busy with minor accidents to have units working traffic. But around here officers are less forgiving if they have to stop a driver for a violation. The rain, sleet or snow usually will add to the likely hood that a ticket will be written.

If I was a bad guy... I would do most of my bad things when the weather was crappy since the old wife tale is, COPS make less stops in bad weather... So I usually make more stops, Plus it is generally easier to find PC to make a stop in crappy weather..

When you're working in -10 degree weather in the Colorado Rockies, you learn real quick how to stay warm and cut the 'chit chat' on a traffic stop :D
And I make the same number of stops.

If i'm on the side of the road somewhere and some fool blows by me in the rain or snow at 80, that means I have to get up to about 110 in a rear wheel CV to catch up in the rain or snow...RIIIGHT! I'll wait for the call that he wiped out and I'll cruise to his location with my rear deck lights on and while I call the ambulance I'll be writing speed unreasonable.

I will reduce my number of proactive traffic stops in crappy weather, but have no problem making stops for unsafe driving when the weather's bad. And I subscribe to the same rule: If your driving behavior forces me to get out of my warm, dry car, someone's getting a citation...and it ain't me.

If it's raining or other inclement weather, I try not to make stops unless the violator is really doing some stupid crap. DUI, HIGH speed, reckless ...absolutely!!!! But as said above I'm not stopping for a seatbelt for two reasons:
1) The bad weather makes people drive worse. By being on the road and stopping cars people freak out and start crashing. No thanks I don't need to be crushed.
2) I don't want to get wet, but if I do stop ya I'll make sure it's under the bridge :D
