This morning, i visited the Max Security Facility in Lee County with a Sgt friend of mine. As a new Sheriffs Deputy i will have to start in the jail. What an experiance, i saw EVERYONE! It was crazy.. I even got to see the suicide watch people... I am excited to start this career and get my feet wet. I am heading to the gun show a little later to get my Glock .40 compact to start shooting with a instructor. I just had to tell about my experiance.

How long in jail before you hit the road?

with our county it varies from what department brings them in. we have one department that does all their paperwork at the pd before they are brought to us, but on an average they spend about 15-30mins in the jail depending on they are clear by us to leave.

you will find that the jail is going to teach you alot, if you take in the experiance. you will learn who it is you are dealing with on the street and who is going to be for dope. the jail is not an easy place to work. after the patrolman bring them in they are yours and you have to deal with them twisting off. the one complaint i have is when a patrolman brings in a 95(persons in custody) is they like to **** them off before they come to jail. but what they dont relize is that they are putting us at risk. you will have a different respect for the corrections officer, it is not easy work. so good luck to you and have fun.

He applied for a deputy position, but said he will have to start out in jail. I was asking him as to how long it takes before he can hit the road as a deputy.

Also are you over or under 21?

Are all the new deputies required to work in jail for a year? or did they put you in jail, because you are not 21 yet?

Well if you are hired at the SO w/ no EXP they want you in the jail.. or unless you are 19-21... SO kinda both....

Have you been through the academy yet? If not, Is the SO putting you through the corrections academy or are you self sponsoring yourself? And is the academy run by the SO or a local community college? Do you know if its CMS or traditional? Sorry alot of questions at once I know. I honestly wish *sort of* that I worked in the jail for a year or so. I've heard that it sucks, but its an experience that will certainly better prepare you for dealing with these types of people.

Good luck with the road. Just had my graduation ceremony last night for my corrections academy class. Once I pass the state exam next month I'll get my star and be rid of the egg badge. Jail's are tough and not to be taken likely. Also don't think of the jail as just a place to be until you can make it to the road. Enjoy working at the jail while you're there and learn everything you can.

I'm in the acdemny now up here in St. Jonhs county and we are doing the CMS courses. They seem to be a lot different form what are instructors have told us. We just got done with DT's and start driving next. I can't wait for the skid pad.

9 months is a long time though!! If at all possible i would take the day class if you can, the night class is long!
