When it snows here the only thing fun to do seems like jumping in a car and heading in a parking lot for some drifting and donuts. What do you guys think about this and is it illegal and why??

When you call 911 to report your car stuck in a ditch or you ran into a snow bank while doing those donuts...then we'll talk.

You're actually serious?

Illegal because:

1 - It is in the law books and we are LAW ENFORCEMENT officers
2 - It is reckless operation when you cannot maintain control of your vehicle and endanger lives (even just yours) & property (the parking lot and what it contains)

Here's a thought, skiing? snowboarding? sledding? Safe and not illegal.

Yep. Illegal. Willful and Wanton Disregard of Safety (Private Property) in Ohio. Expensive citation. At least 4 points on your license. Increased insurance rates. And, that's just if I see you doing it and nothing else happens. You run into something (or someone) and you get to deal with those expenses too.

Still sound fun?

Fun form of reckless driving  , ... unless it's a private parking lot closed off to all public access, then it's just plain fun as long as you have written permission from the lot's owner. :D

Even if all stores are closed at the mall for example, anyone can come through the same lot you want to drift in and your actions places them (and the light poles and store fronts) in danger. ;)

Now if it's a buisness with a private employee only parking lot and that parking lot is chained off or gated and posted "private parking only" and there are "No Tresspassing signs, and no one else or their vehicles are there (it's empty) and you have the permission slip, that's different.

If it's just an acre that you had paved for your persional pleasure and not open to the public in any way, that's OK too.

As long as it is open (and traveled) by the driving public, you can be cited (at least in my state).

Then most likely I am sure it is still illegal and you would be considered trespassing on school property. Although I am sure you think its the "cool" thing to do....well it's not. This is not the time of year to get yourself into an accident. Think safe, not stupid.

Doing donuts in an excellent way to learn skid control. I use to do them all the time and still do one or two a year just to remind me. Because of doing them I am able to get out of almost any skid (almost never happens). I was stopped by a LEO one day, I explained and he just told me don't do it here..

It all depends on where you live and your attitude.

:)

and for heavens sake, don't do it on a road!

I remember my dad taking me into a parking lot and teaching me how to recover from spins, etc. That was the most fun driving lesson I'd ever had. :D

The above posts are pretty much correct. Doing donuts in your school parking lot can get you into some trouble.

Oh, I agree that it's good experience and that it teaches skid control. You just can't do it legally on any roadway or parking lot that is open to public use.

haha. That's awesome.

That'd be a fun site to catch a cop doing some donuts when he thinks no one is watching. :p

Last winter I had a call of an MVC in a parking lot. When I got there I learned that the kid who was driving was doing donuts in the parking lot. He ended up hitting the only light post in the lot. He caused nearly $10 000 damage to his father's new 2004 Dodge Ram. Dad wasn't happy with his son. When I gave the kid his Careless driving ticket, his Dad thanked me for ensuring that his son took responsibility for his actions.

We've been stopping kids all weekend for donuts in the parking lot next to a movie theater. Funniest was yesterday. Kid gets his FOUR WHEEL DRIVE trailblazer stuck on a SMALL snowplow bank. HAHAHA I got in and out of there in my front wheel drive Impala witrh snow tires of course. We dont cite them unless its really reckless...Plus the night before a guy in our Expedition stops some kids and riot acts them, them proceeds to do a few of his own. They all laughed. A minute later they get stopped again by another officer and they say "But the bald guy did em too,and said we could" and pointed to the Expedition driving officer. HEHE. NO NOT ME...

When I got my license back in Norway, this was part of the curriculum to be able to take the test. We would go to the driving range, where they have metal plates in the ground, covered with water and oil (WEE!!). Would drive down, and try and avoid things jumping out in front of us. I didn't kill too many of them ;) But it was fun.

You should think twice about doing it .............. having said that:
When I was 18-19 back in the midwest, my buddy and I would take our cars to a parking lot and do the skidding around thing. My buddy had a front wheel drive and my car was rear wheel drive. Took turns spinning donuts. That was a blast! It wasa winter tradition.

Anyhow, I don't think I'll be finding too many people dooing donuts in the snow out here in CA. (at least in my part) :)

I was out pulling trash during a snow storm and this doofus showing off his lack of intellect nearly rolled his explorer doing donuts. How? The plowing contractor was on the other side of the lot and he had a couple piles to get yet. The donut dork wound up literally about a foot from the two foot high pile with his right side. Any closer and the momentum would have rolled him and I would have had a hell of a mess to clean up.

Every time I see such an idiot I get SO "impressed." I just wish the county or the OSHP had stopped for a coffee. It was about 9 am.

Well, drive over the Washington Bridge and go to The Dock Shopping Center and let me know what time you will be there doing donuts so you can get Norked.

In CO you can write careless and reckless on private property. IMO, donuts in snow in empty parking lot=FUN...until someone looses an eye. If I see someone I tell them to go where I won't see them(I then tell them where my JD ends). If they hit something and give me paper then I give them paper. That being said, we have a secluded golf course prking lot on the edge of town that is perfect for donuts in the CVI during the weewee hours of the AM. :D

And Snow is why everyone should drive audi's.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=9171485126892796503&q=audi

theres another one which shows an audi a6 driving up a ski ramp, behind the scenes footage of it actualy doing it. But all the links i can find to it have inappropriate material on the sidebars and such.

If you want to view it search "audi a6 ski ramp" in google, and 1 of the links will contain the video.

You've got to be kidding. Why even ask this question? Look at it this way, you may be having one heck of a time doing your doughnuts in the parking lot. Did you ever stop to think what would happen if an innocent bystander was walking by as you lost all control of your 2000 pound weapon? Not only is it illegal, it's just plain stupid. I feel dumber from having read this post.

Here's your sign.
