At least in TN, we don't know about your ccw until we run your driver's license.

If I run your license and find out you have one, and you don't tell me about it and/or your weapon, the rest of the stop will not be very pleasant for you.

It's a good idea to let LEO's know that you have a firearm in your vehicle, whether it is mandated in your state or not to "notify."

What would be the appropriate way to inform the officer? I'm sure yelling, "I have a gun," wouldn't go over too well. ;)

Pretty simple...keep both hands on the wheel and advise the officer immediately that you have a CCW permit, that you are armed, and the location of the weapon.

On the wheel or out of the window is what I've always heard ;)

This sounds really stupid, but I'm ignorant of such matters, so bare with me: at what point in the, "Do you know why I pulled you over? License and Registration, please," conversation do you interject, "Oh, BTW, I have a hand cannon in the center console."

Also, what about knives? I'm a chef, and when I travel, I carry my knives with me (in large part for protection, in part because everyone wants me to cook for them).

LOL, "License and registration please." "Yes sir, by the way, I have a 12 inch OJ Simpson knife sitting not a foot from me." *Officer pulls out gun*
*I have a anxiety induced defication attack* :D

Not trying to be a pestering illegitimate child, just curious....

If you have a knife on your person or in a vehicle within your reach with a blade length over 4", it is a criminal charge of carrying a concealed weapon in TN.

You will be arrested. ;)

As far as the ccw, as soon as the officer approaches as the others have advised.

Something to this effect: "Don't mean to interrupt officer, but I have a conceal/carry permit and my firearm is located..."

Conceal/Carry does not cover knives by the way, at least not in my state.

You do it as soon as you have contact with the officer. Don't be digging around for your license, registration, and insurance paperwork and say, "Oh, by the way, I'm a CCW permit holder and there's a gun in this console that I've been rummaging around in."

As for the 18 inch butcher knives...I'd recommend the trunk.

Yeah, I read that in one of my psych texts and thought, "I've gotta use that sometime!"

The other was *obviously* anxiety induced urination.
