Does anyone know of any departments that have unarmed Reserve or Auxiliary positions that will accept under the age of 21 in the greater north east Ohio area?

I don't understand, I'm confused.
Why are you looking for an unarmed position as a LEO? Security work would be more in line with what you're looking for.

I have done security work in the past and it just doesn't come close to working on the streets and getting to know the real world. That's why I

You're not going to be able to get a LEO position here (Auxillary or otherwise) in Ohio that is "unarmed" unless it is in Corrections.....even then, you still may be required to qualify with departmental weapons. What's your aversion to firearms? A LEO in Ohio is expected to be able to qualify with and if nessassary, utilize a firearm as a regular part of his or her duties.
You should consider another line of work if firearms proficiency is an issue for you.

Firearms is not a issue with me other then my age, I am under the age of 21. I would love to find a Auxiliary position that would allow me to carry but chances are thats not going to happen. I know of a few departments up in the Cuyahoga Falls area that have unarmed Auxiliary officers, but most won't take under the age of 21. Thats why i'm looking for a unarmed position, not only will that give me experience for in a few years it gets me a foot in the door.

Ahh! NOW the picture is slightly more clear. I see what you're about, now. You're looking to break into the LE field, yes? In that case, let me tell you that you'd be hard pressed to find any departments in Ohio that will give you any Auxillary position because:
1. You're not even OPOTA certified. (I assume) Therefore, you can't hold a commission- Auxillary or otherwise- anyway.
2. You're under 21 to begin with. I can't think of any LE departments that'll hire someone under 21.
That said, there's a lot of other ways to get your foot in the door, so don't get dissappointed yet. The following are great ways to get solid experience and make you an attractive candidate: ;)
1. Corrections- The minimum age is usually 18 or 19. It'll teach you how to better deal with people and especially the criminal element.
2. Military- It will give you life experience and maturity, as well as veteran's preference in many departments.
3. College Degree- 4 or 2 year. More and more departments want their candidates to have some college under their belt; if not a full degree.
4. Security work- You say that you've done this before, so why not continue with it if the other options don't work for you? It's a great way to get related experience.
Hope that helps you out a bit. ;) :D

I have seen that not many departments have taken very much interest in me, especially when they see i'm under the age of 21. But yeah I'm working on my degree in Criminal Justice at the University of Akron, I have my OPOTA, (private security) Firefighter I, and EMT-B, plus i'm on a advisory board for a local high school criminal justice/fire/EMS program. I knew it would be very tough to find a department that would want a 19 year old especially not OPOTC. I have applied with S.O. corrections but their budgets seem to be against me at the current moment. I know there isn't much of a choice out there for LE at my age so I took a part time job with a fire dept. I just wanted to finish my degree and try to find a Reserve posistion for experience, then maybe start looking for jobs out of state (Florida).

Well, you seem to be well under way. Keep looing and applying throughout the entire state; be flexible and willing to travel to a new location if need be.
Just bear in mind that the OPOTA security course and the OPOTA LE course are two very seprate things. Let us know how you're search is going and ask if you have more questions. ;) :D

There are plenty of departments in the area with Reserves or Auxiliaries who have no carrying, non certified officers on their roster. They obviously can't arrest, etc. But are used for security at high school athletic functions, help with events, etc.
Where in NE Ohio are you?

I live in Medina County, and of course I'm willing to travel a few miles so I can have the opportunity to experience police work.
I know of maybe one or two department in Richland County that will allow non-armed, non-certified guys on their auxiliary. But, from that I understand, its more like an explorer's program really.
I really don't know what you are dealing with up there.
good luck

So far I found that Lorain County Sheriff's Office will take at 19 for auxiliary deputy, but I am not a resident of Lorain County so I don't know if they will accept me or not. I also checked with North Ridgeville PD and it is 18 there but I am still waiting for more info. back from them about their auxiliary unit. I tried checking with LaGrange PD and on the website it says get a hold of the mayor and every time I call she is never there. And Wellington's PD website doesn't work anymore.

Thanks for the info. but Crestline and Mansfield is about 60 miles away from where I live. I was hoping to try to find a place with in a 45 min drive. Anything in Wayne county, Medina county, Summit county, or lower Lorain county is where i'm hoping to find a department. If you have any info. about Mansfield I would appreciate it if you PM me about. I may consider the drive if I can't find anywhere else.

Scratch NRPD, I just got a reply from a Lt. that just informed me that I had to be 21 even though the Chief advised me the age minimum was 18 to apply for the auxiliary unit.....what ever
I had a few Mansfield auxiliary in our academy....they were looking for other places to go because Mansfield is not planning on hiring for a LONG time
Mansfield and Crestline are the ones I was thinking of....but I haven't heard anything from my app to Crestline yet so don't know the scoop there.

No kidding. I haven't talked to anyone from that area for about 3 weeks or so. Last I heard they had no plans to hire anyone even though they were drawn way down below set staffing levels.

I did try with Marshallville PD already, but the Chief failed to reply to my letter. I also had a contact check with Dalton for me, but there was no luck with them either. And WCSO said I have to be 21 for their Reserve Unit. I'll check with the departments that you listed me and i'll let you know if I have any luck with any of them. Thanks for the info!

the last time I checked... The Medina County Seriff's Office had a pretty active Explorer Post. That is uncertified and unarmed. You can be an explorer until age 21. If you want to experience LE and you're under 21 why don't you give that a shot That's how I started out (many moons ago).

I did get an application for corrections with MCSO. I talked to a few guys that were on SO and they told me to get a app and apply. No offense but explorers is like a kick in the face to me, I did that when I was younger. I know there is more out there for LE for people under the age of 21, it's just hard to find. Plus I don't want have to hear a bunch of 13 year olds talk about how their teacher assigned them too much home work last night. :p

There was a guy who graduated from our academy who was under 21 and I believe got on to West Salem. It seems to me they had to get special insurance or some sort of liability waiver for him to carry. He may have been a young 20yo though, if that makes a difference.
I could be wrong but I think that Smithville hired someone under 21 a few years back. I know Smithville has a new Chief since then. West Salem may have new admin now, as well.

Yeah I know a few departments that have took under the age of 21 in the Wayne county area; but what is really killing me is me not being OPOTA certified. I would have like to have gone through the academy already. But the fear of not being commisioned with in a year holds me back. I would like find a department that would either say yeah if you compelete the academy, we will bring you on as a auxiliary. Or find auxiliary that doesn't require opota and attend the academy while being already on a department.

I just sent in my application and resume to the Lorain County Sheriff's Office. I saw on their website they were looking for applicants for their 06 auxiliary academy. The requirements were 19 and a valid DL.
