Hello everyone,
I am a mechanic at a new car dealer. Pretty frequently we (as mechanics) have to inspect new vehicles before they are sold. One of the things we do in the inspection is test drive the vehicle and fill the tank with gas. So here's the question: Does the new car have to have a "Dealer Tag" (or any other license plate) on it to be legal to dive on public roads??? Some guys at work told me that there is "RULE" that says we dont need a tag to drive a brand new car if we are in a certain mile radius of the dealership. And someone else told me this years ago. I have always thought it was B.S. I mean, it doesnt make sense to me. I'm pretty sure any vehicle operated on a public road must have a registration. Anybody heard of this "special rule"? I'm located in Maryland if it makes any difference. Thanks.

If the car is on the roadway in NY it has to have number plates affixed to it, no exceptions. It also has to be inspected whether or not it has a dealer plate on it, which some people seem to think isn't needed.
I have written many cars that I have stopped that have been out on test drives without anything affixed. I usually write the company as the offender to spare the mechanic behind the wheel the loss of his license.
On roadway's in NY without insurance is a mandatory 1 year revocation of your license.

I don't know about Maryland, but it does if it's in Virginia. If there is indeed a "rule" or "special rule", it's written in law and if not written in law, it's akin to a "wive's tale" and likely exist only in someone's imagination or hope chest.
Call your nearest Maryland State Police office and ask an officer if it exist, and what code section it is listed under if so, then look it up online and make a copy to carry ('cause you'll probably need it someday driving around with no tags). :)

In Texas you have to have at least a "black" dealer temporary tag to do what you described. regardless of how far from the dealership or service bay you are. I might use my discretion if I stop you on a street adjacent to the dealership, but there is no rule that I am aware of. Maryland might be different.

You need a registration plate to operate a vehicle on any Maryland road. If you work for a dealership, grab one of their dealer tags or Transporter tag and put it on the vehicle before you take it out for a drive.
You can use either of those tags to test the vehicle, and if you are stopped, you can explain away the reason in most cases. However, if you are stopped with NO tags on the vehicle at all, no registration card, and when the VIN is run, it doesn't come back to anything, expect the vehicle to be towed and you to be issue a handful of citations.
Cheers....

Yes, in Maryland each and every vehicle needs to have some sort of registration attached to it in order to be driven on the roadways. The *special rule* is that dealer tags basicly cover the "unregistered" vehicle so that it can be driven.
