I love my '06 Tahoe with a million miles on it!:D I like the leg room compared to a crown vic. I like sitting higher than a car, so I can look into peoples windows. It may not be a pursuit vehicle, but Im rarely pursuing anyone. My rig will haul ***** to calls when needed, take a corner at very reasonable speeds, and it'll run a violator down pretty quick too...just don't drive like a clown.
If only I had radar:cool:

I hate driving it at high speeds because of the body roll on turns and winding roads.
I love it! Its reminds me of flying in a helicopter:eek:

I need some Tprs opinions on this. I was driving down Rt 20 doing the speed limit in the right hand lane and came up on a car doing abou 30. I check my blind spots and get ready to pass. I didn't push my blinker down all the way but that doesn't mean it won't still go on. Blah blah blah, pass him and get back into the right lane signaling that lane change as well next thing I know a Trooper flys up on my rear with his lights on. Pull over immediately to a safe location for the Trooper and myself. He initiated contact told me why he was stopping me, I explained what I did. He asked how my record was, pretty much spotless with one parking on pavement. He then went back to his car and wrote me the cite. As he approached again he gave me my options and kind of stressed the fact about pleading not guilty and talking to the DA. It was a pretty harmless offense with little to no traffic at the time. Should I go and fight it? I really don't want 3 points on my license. Maybe it's just me I think it's a bit ridiculous. I respect him for doing his job and everything don't get me wrong. I know for a fact I signaled when I changed lanes, I didn't push my turn signal down all the way until it clicked. I'm just a bit confused and upset about it. Not trying to be another this ticket is BS kind of guy.

I take it you got a ticket for not using your turn signal?!?
Are you sure you turn signal is functioning properly? Did he check this?
What the Trooper was telling you was you can almost always get a reduction through the DA's office. Google the county you were issued a ticket in and contact the DA's office -- They might even have a direct line or a page dedicated to tickets on their website which explains what you need to do; Usually send a copy of your driving abstract and a "cry me a river" letter explaining your case.
After all you surely didn't get a ticket for actually parking on the pavement last time now did you? That is the typical reduction, which is a fine and no points.
Best of luck. Watch out for those Troopers out there :D

I know the process with State Police tickets has changed and everything, but do you still have the right to a supporting deposition? If so, my advice would be to waive that right. Nobody likes paperwork. Oh and prosecutors love that revolving door so they will work with you.

At this point in time I didn't click it down fully, which is why I'm guessing he stopped me because I was within the law as far as everything else I did. You're right haha, no I did not. When I was 16 I got a not stopping at a stop sign fully which was reduced and had absolutely no issue paying it or even taking the full boat on it because I was in the wrong. I'm willing to go to trial on this because I know for a fact I was in the right. I sound like another joe citizen on this I know, can't help it when I'm at a complete loss for words with this situation. Thing is, I don't want a reduction, I wasn't wrong in what I did. I used my signal, if it wasn't working properly write me a fix it ticket and I'll take care of it. I'm crying you guys a river right now but hey this thread needed some spice to it anyways! ;)

Dear this ticket is BS guy,
Here is your supporting dep:
You were (s/b,n/b,e/b,w/b) in the Town of Idrivefast on sr 20 at tailgating O’clock.
However it will not say that you were speeding, tailgating the driver in front of you when you decided to pass them without signaling. You probably committed more V&T violations but you weren’t issued those. This sounds like it was the Troopers fault, because your record is spotless and you only have a parked on pavement ticket.
I tell you what plead not guilty and make sure you tell the judge it wasn’t you and that it was the Troopers fault, that should fly. You could track down the little old lady you passed (ran off the road) and have them as a witness in your defense.
Just so you know I believe it wasn’t your fault either.

Go on some other forum if you want to complain about cops making mistakes, there are plenty of places for that.
Like I said just tell the judge that the Trooper made a mistake and he should just admit it.

Very funny, to bad I wasn't speeding otherwise he would have mentioned it to me. I was on a 40mph speed limit with a person doing 30 in the right hand lane. I signaled to move over and than moved back. Just because most other people's excuses are god awful doesn't mean everyones is. People make mistakes even cops and I'm sure they will be the first to admit it. Thanks for your sarcasm though, was a great attempt. But completely false. So have a good day captain ahole!

I just convinced myself to buy a sled too...I bought a 2006 Arctic Cat F7 with 2200 miles for $3500. I think I got a steal. Now the gear on the other hand, I cleared a grand FAST ha ha...
How about an '09 F8 Sno Pro with 134 miles on it for $5500? Of course I said yes... now I just need a trailer and clothes to keep warm.

Usually you get to call home on Tuesday and Thursday nights. You can bring a cell phone but you have to leave it in your car. The time of the calls change depending on what is going on and how the week is going. Bad week = less time or no time.

You will get phone privileges early on and they are consistent but limited and sometimes they get nixed depending on the tone of the day/week. In the beginning don't expect much. Regardless, just be happy that you won't have to stand in line on your tier waiting for the payphone to make a 1.5 minute call home like the old days! I thanked my unlucky stars for that one every time I was out in my car for a few minutes of peace. Serenity NOW!!!:D

Maybe it's just me, but isn't there some type of law saying that the NYSP can't use unmarked cars???
"This will be a zero-tolerance enforcement period; if you use a hand-held cell phone while operating a vehicle on the New York State Thruway you should fully expect to receive a ticket from a New York State Trooper," added Major Meyers. "Additionally, motorists on the Thruway can expect Troopers to utilize roving unmarked cars to spot people who are operating their vehicles while using a hand-held cell phone"

From what I know, a roving unmarked car is basically a spotter, whereas a marked car will make the traffic stop.
GrayState
10-14-2009, 03:33 PM
Right, we can use "unmarked" cars all day long as long as regular traffic stops aren't being done. Typical scenario is a seatbelt checkpoint with a spotter in an unmarked car sitting before point where motorists see the checkpoint. The spotter sees someone w/out a seatbelt and radios a description of the driver and car. Of course the driver has their seatbelt on by the time they get to the checkpoint, but they're already caught and a uniformed Trooper with marked units in the area do the actual stop.

Hello All,
Im not new to the forums, but new to the thread. Could anyone in the know predict if the current list will make it to about 8000? I scored in the mid 80's on the exam and my number is somewhere in the 7500's. Normally I would have no doubt on being called eventually. I think the last they called up until about 11000, however times are tough and they don't seem to be holding nearly as many classes. Im sure I still have a long long wait if they do get to 7500's, but im not too sure they will get there this time

No one here is going to be able to make a prediction with any sort of accuracy and I don't think any of us have any sort of insider knowledge that would help with that prediction. I'm guessing that the list will go to 8,000 eventually... If I were you, I would count on it being 3 years from now before they reach it and even longer before you would actually be hired. If it happens sooner, great.

The only problem with it being three years from now is that it is that the list itself is going to be two years old come Feb., and usually there is a new test every four years. The economy really screwed things up this time around, but like GrayState said noone can make any sort of predictions. Alls I know is that its been almost two years and they have only reached up to 2300, so my guess would be they wont get to 8000. :(

Well, I just rounded up :)
The spots can't stay vacant forever... and as happened with the last list, they can extend the eligibility for those that have already processed even after the list is expired past 4 years. I know that didn't help you guys out on the current list though. People retiring from the double classes put through decades ago will also increase retirements (or has been already from some accounts).

Just a quick question.
Can the powers that be extend the life of the current list beyond 4 years ?
So if scores that I call "law school scores" ( attend/graduate from Law School prior to your number being called) stay eligible. ?

Yes. There is no rule that says we have to give a test every 4 years. We can give a test every 2 years, every 6 years, or whenever one is needed.
In a typical hiring environement, we would reach non-passing score within 3 or 4 years, and would therefore be inclined to give a new test. If we still have plenty of passing score after 4 years, they may decide to keep hiring from the exisiting list.
On the other hand, once a list gets a couple of years old, we get lots of declinations. People find other jobs, move on with their lives, and tell us "no thanks." Generally speaking, the list moves faster the older it gets. This applies, of course, only if we are hiring at all.

It isn't cool that the stupid economy is messing things up for everyone. But, it does make it a fantastic time to join the military (or Peace Corps), considering they are always accepting applications. I'm not a recruiter or affiliated in any way, just giving people some ideas. LE organizations love life experience and an easy way to get some is serving your country. Can anyone clarify on community service in regards to character and fitness? Does the NYSP view community service favorably for hiring decisions or it doesn't really matter?

No secret SDT, I'm in iraq now, will be for the next few months, but just before I mobed I went through the whole processing, and I passed everything. Shortly after that last class in dec. started I recieved a letter saying the whole rank thing but to stay in shape. My number is mid 600s, and I put in a deferment before I left so if anything were to happen and I get notified for a class, the State knows I'm not blowing them off. So basically, as long as don't screw up I'm in a good position for going through the next academy after I get home (juneish). Sorry for the rambling, Thanks again-

I've got a question about the height/weight standards for processing. On the NY Trooper website they list a chart detailing what is the acceptable weight range for a person at a given height. I'm not sure I understand how to read it. Take for example a male who is 6'. What does it mean when the chart says small, medium, and large frame and then lists different weights for those frames? Does it mean that a person who is 6' and weighs 175 lbs is a large frame? Basically what determines the frame and is it even relevant; the person doing the measurements, or the actual measurements themselves? For me, the way I read the chart is that a person 6' tall, who weighs no more than 184 lbs, is within the weight range and therefore passes that portion of the exam. Is that correct?
Here is the source I was looking at: http://www.nytrooper.com/height_weight.cfm

Does it mean that a person who is 6' and weighs 175 lbs is a large frame? Basically what determines the frame and is it even relevant; the person doing the measurements, or the actual measurements themselves? For me, the way I read the chart is that a person 6' tall, who weighs no more than 184 lbs, is within the weight range and therefore passes that portion of the exam. Is that correct?
Here is the source I was looking at: http://www.nytrooper.com/height_weight.cfm
I am guessing that is correct. If you do a search on the internet you can find ways to get your frame size, you have to measure different things like your wrist and what not. I know when I was at processing way back in September of last year, I am right around 6' and I weighed in at 183-184 and I didn't have to get my body fat measured and I wouldn't say I am a large frame.
If you look up height to weight charts elsewhere it would say I am overweight... I would have a very hard time saying I am overweight since my body fat is around 10-12%, which is considered in the low to middle of the healthy range.

Some time ago there was a discussion on that H/W table. Don't know how many thousands of posts it would be.
It appears that, from what I remember from that thread ( being 6-4/290 and in shape I was interested) , that those numbers are more guidelines rather than finite numbers.
If you score well in the PT entrance, and you score well in the Academy physical testing you are in shape, if you do poorly you are fat and overweight.
Story; My Dad, an ex NJSP, advises me that NJ had similar tables, back in his day, but that he graduated at 6-5/255.
His buddy took the Syracuse PD test, got a 100 in the test, and failed the test because he was 6-2/245 at the time, having been just cut by the NY Giants, MLB, and 40 pounds over their table. NJSP was no problem for him either.
So a good answer may be, "it depends".
Current NYSP are always welcome to give us their expert advice/opinions.

At last round of testing we were weighed and measured after PAT. Anyone out of guidelines was measured for BF% by a BIA scale. I didn't hear of anyone being told to go home or even told to shape up.

If you are over what the chart says you have to beat the calipers. 5'10" and 210lbs, benching 350lbs and squatting 1000lbs... no one will bat a lash. 5'10" and can't do 10 pushups... better have a new dream. Plenty of guys go in jacked and way over what the chart says.
If you get appointed in that shape... expect to loose some mass and strength because you aren't in the gym 7 days a week for the 6 months. One of the guys I went to HS with and graduated with lost ~20lbs (IIRC - 7+ years ago) of muscle mass over the 6 months.

Maybe I should have mentioned that my Dad went into NJSP academy at 280 so he basically lost 25 pounds during the training.
He always says that most of the meals were so bad that he ate 2 PBJ for breakfast, 2 for lunch (especially is boxing class was right after), and 3 for dinner. Never was a fan of chipped beef on toast(poop on a shingle), the common lunch.
Couldn't lift much at the end, but could run forever...

If you don't meet H/W chart they will put you on the BF scale. Each age-H/W group has an associated tolerance for BF%. While I didn't see anyone specifically rejected. I wouldn't assume Division to accept someone grossly out of H/W-BF% standards, but like Trooper4985 said, if you come in heavy but are in obviously good shape they aren't going to send you packing.
As far as my experience, Expect to loose size and mass while at the academy. The PT does not emphasize size and bulk. Toward the end you will be allowed access to the weight room if you make honors PT. Don't expect to get 2 hours a day in the gym though. It's more like 30 minutes twice a week if you are lucky.
I went in @ 5'11" - 195# and left @ 180#
One of my roommates came in 6'2"-260# jacked and left in the 240s
You are in control of your calories, however, the food is bad. PB&J is a staple, so are hard boiled eggs in the AM (when someone remembers to make them).
And yes, you run, a lot.

Right, as said already again and to sum up... as long as you comfortably meet the fitness standards, you shouldn't have to worry.
I went in the academy at around 170 and left at around 160. I'm hovering at 175 right now, but I've been hitting the track again lately :)
I learned to love PB&J at the academy and I still have a PB&J regularly. I don't think I had eaten one since 5th grade prior to the academy hahah.

So heres a question for anyone with the knowledge am I sure everyone already knows the answer, but I have to ask because I got into a conversation last night with a buddy of mine who I havent seen in a while.
We started off talking because I just picked up a new truck for plowing, during the convo he asked me how the state police thing was going. I told him everything I went through and then went on to tell him that the only issue is the fact that there is no money for a new class, and the budget is killing me. Heres where the convo got a little interesting.
He went on to tell me that he knows a guy who is currently a sheriff with a local PD, that had just went into the trooper academy several weeks ago, i informed him that it couldnt be true because as far as i knew the academy was shut down. However he insisted the guy he knew was currently invited to the academy. I dont know if he just got his story mixed up or if we got a little bit of the old telephone game going on where stories change as they travel from mouth to mouth.
With that being said has anyone heard anything that could possibly suggest his story is accurate? I told him several times it couldnt be possible but he was pretty sure which in turn put some doubt in my own mind.

Just thought the guys waiting would find this interesting... I was reading through the 2008 Annual Report that is on the NYSP website, not the NYTrooper.com and found these stats for the member hiring. Most of it means nothing, but I just thought the # at both sessions and # of backgrounds was interesting....
Conducted Trooper Candidate Processing
in September in preparation for the Winter
2008 Basic School.
A total of 458 Trooper candidates
attended both sessions, resulting
in the initiation of 276 background
investigations.
Additionally, 45 background investigation
updates were conducted for candidates
who were processed but not reached for
the Academy class held in April.
During 2008, recruitment efforts resulted
in 27,963 candidates applying to take the
examinations.
More than 19,000 applicants took the
entrance examination, with 15,677
successfully passing.

All this talk about Academy food makes me want to open a big can of corned beef hash and maybe overcook some sausage links. I think I will skip the imitation veal patties and fried clams and go for the sandwich at lunch though.
I went in the Academy 6'-02'', 205, At the initial processing I got my body fat checked; they said lay off the fritos, and beer; patted me on the back and said, "you run good for a big man." I came out at 190. Run times started at 11 minute 1.5 mile run and I graduated with very low 9 minute run times. It all comes down to how bad you want it.

Daryl was a 'food processing expert' at NJSP Academy, which doubles as a NJ Army National Guard base.
His breakfast job; place two pieces of french toast/pancakes onto tongs, the tongs he held with his plastic gloved right hand in place.
Only problem was that he used his ungloved left hand to reach into the tray and place the two pieces onto the tongs.
Hot dogs in dirty water was another treat, since the water wasn't hot he was able to reach into the bucket and grab two dogs, again with the naked left hand, to also place on the tongs. Naturally he would had the tongs on the gloved right hand again.
He hadn't quite got that use of tongs down, and there was no talking in line. But he would always give you a big smile as he placed those two items on your metal tray.

State Trooper killed in Greene County wreck
Posted: Nov 4, 2009 03:47 PM EST
CATSKILL, N.Y. - NEWS10 has learned that an on-duty New York State Trooper has been killed in a car crash in Greene County.
The accident happened around 3:00pm on Route 32 in the Town of Catskill, near Cairo Junction Road. That's also called County Route 46.
As a result, Route 32 has been shut down in both directions between Cairo Junction Road and Cauterskill Road and will remain closed until around 6:00pm.
Sources tell us the Trooper was a four-year veteran.
We know there was one other car involved in this crash, but there is no word right now on any other injuries.
We have a crew on the way to the scene and we'll bring you more details as soon as we can.

It has been a rough year for Troop D as this was the 3rd funeral this year.
It is always amazing to see the amount of officers from all over the US and Canada that attend these funerals. There was pictures posted on a local website but they have been taken down and I couldn't find them.
Once again the NJSP were outstanding. If you have never seen them at a funeral they send a bus load of people and right off the bus they are marching in cadence and stay in military formation until they fallout before getting back on the bus. Very professional looking and they always represent their agency well.
David Lane played football for General Brown HS and people were holding up signs of #30 (his number) when GB beat Cazenovia in the Carrier Dome last weekend and the entire team went to the wake after the game.
A tragic loss of life but a funeral befitting a hero...

Has anyone heard of NYSP "freezing" retirement for eligible NY Troopers?
I have a good source in NJ and was recently told that the NJSP has just done this (basically telling them they were not allowed to retire for a certain period of time) and was curious to see if NYSP was following this.

I have not heard anything about that, but I don't think freezing retirement would have the desired effect. First, the troopers forced to stay on would likely be the top paid troopers... and how motivated do you think someone is going to be that is told they can't retire? I guess if NJSP is doing it though, anything is possible.

First, I just saw a friend today that was Lt, NJSP. He stated he had just retired and was getting his PI License.
Second, NYSP has a better pay sched and note that NJ does not have location salary boosts like NY.
Third, NJ pays into their pension plan a certain mandatory percentage, used to be 7 % back in the day, not sure if or what NY does.
Fourth, NJ has a mandatory retirement age of 55 except for the Superintendant who is appointed by the Gov. Several law suits to overturn that rule have failed to date.

The hiring freeze has the intent, and effect, of reducing the size of state agencies. I think the state would welcome additional retirements.

The NJSP Lt that I talked to yesterday would not have retired if he could have stayed. He has 3 kids in college and another ready to go soon, but that is the problem of getting married late in life and not having athletes on schollie.

Story; Friend walks into the barracks sees a kid arrested for possession over 25 grams of MJ. Knows the kid is the Son of an NJSP officer. Talkes to the arresting Trooper, figures out that the arrest is questionable on the mv stop. Talks the Trooper into letting the kid go and destroys the MJ. Turns out the kid was a big player in MJ, had been followed by undercover Troopers, Father had been forced retirement because of age, was suing NJSP to get back in....long story. Basically my friend took a long "vacation" for the court martial and it took him another 10 years to make Sgt. Today of course everyone goes to jail on that one. The kid/son got arrested again 6 months later, a leopard doesn't change his spots.

I heard there was a meeting in Albany last week regarding the status of the next class. Apparently they are considering putting another class through due to retirements since it is costing them overtime because of shift shortages (they must have a certain minimum number of troopers on duty at each station).. no guarantees here at all and definitely all hear say (I do not work for the NYSP), but just letting you guys keep some hope alive that are waiting... plus this thread has died out lately...

It would be real sweet if they did in fact start another academy class in the near future. I know that eventually they will have to due to attrition, but the wait is the worse part. Anybody else have any new rumors??

Stalemate in Albany as State Nears Its Last Dollar

ALBANY — New York State is running out of cash.
Without a budget deal, New York will be left with just $36 million in the bank by the end of December, according to current projections. And the money will last that long, officials say, only if the state chooses to fully exhaust its emergency reserves by tapping several billion dollars’ worth of temporary loans from its rainy-day fund and short-term investments.
For weeks, Gov. David A. Paterson has invoked the shrinking amount of available cash in an effort to provoke the Legislature to deal with the state’s $3.2 billion budget deficit. So far, the specter of such dire fiscal outcomes has been greeted with what amount to legislative shrugs, chiefly in the recalcitrant State Senate.
The stalemate in Albany is familiar, of course, and there are many lawmakers and experts who predict that the Legislature will act at the 11th hour, as it has before, to avoid the worst damage.
But with no end in sight to the negotiations, state officials are beginning to reckon with what could be an unprecedented cash crisis. And many say that even if the current deficit is closed, the state is at considerable risk going forward — less able, for instance, to borrow money because of worsening credit ratings and ill prepared for far more severe deficits ahead.
New York, which has a roughly $130 billion budget, the second-largest behind California, is certainly not suffering alone. The 50 states have faced cumulative deficits of more than $250 billion over their last two budget cycles, according to data compiled by the National Conference of State Legislatures. In New York, the weight of the recession has been coupled with the struggles of Wall Street, the state’s main financial engine.
But New York is by no means California, which has become the national measuring stick of statewide financial ruin. The state is not sending out i.o.u.’s to creditors, students at state schools are not holding sit-ins in dormitories, and Albany, unlike Sacramento, has not had to grapple with relocating a tent city for the homeless. Further, revenue typically picks up in January, when Wall Street bonuses, however diminished from previous levels, start coming in.
But the situation in New York is not good, either.
In modern times, the state’s general fund has never had a negative balance, according to the state comptroller’s office. If New York does in fact run out of cash, it will have to delay paying some of its biggest bills. Chief among the bills the state will face in December are $1.6 billion in aid the state is supposed to pay school districts, $2.5 billion in property tax relief to individual homeowners, and $500 million in general aid meant to go to local governments.
“If you put any of that off, at some point people are not getting the money they are expecting,” said the state comptroller, Thomas P. DiNapoli, a Democrat. “That could affect local governments, school districts, nonprofits, hospitals.”
The governor and his staff have raised the threat of layoffs and furloughs if the impasse drags on, and there is the potential for a partial shutdown of some government services.
“Unless we act, New York will run out of money, even after we delay payments to schools and local governments,” the governor said Tuesday in a brief address via Web cast. “This is an unprecedented fiscal emergency.”
The state’s credit rating is below average and at some risk of a further downgrade. The Paterson administration has already squeezed the budgets of state agencies, an action it can take unilaterally. And this year’s skirmish is considered a prelude to a fierce budget fight in 2010, when the deficit is far larger in what is an election year for the entire Legislature.
There have already been any number of ways that the strain on the budget has been felt across the state. Billions of dollars worth of scheduled increases in school aid, enacted by Gov. Eliot Spitzer to settle a long-running lawsuit over the distribution of school aid, will be stretched out over seven years instead of four. Taxes on the wealthy have been raised, and fees of all kinds have been increased.
For the first time in decades, the state Police Academy probably will not have a new class for either the fall or the spring. The state has closed three upstate minimum-security prison camps and six facilities operated by the Office of Children and Family Services. Hours have been limited and facilities closed at parks including Jones Beach, and parks across the state are mowing fewer lawns to save money. The state ice rink was closed last winter.
Budget watchdogs say far steeper cuts are needed to reckon with deficits that will escalate sharply in 2011 as federal stimulus money runs out and the new wealth tax expires.
But negotiations have been fundamentally stalled — and even irrational at times. Senate Democrats, who have thus far refused to hold a vote to legalize same-sex marriage, have nonetheless floated the theory in negotiations that the state could expect to take in more than $50 million a year in new revenue from the legalization of same-sex marriage, from a combination of marriage license and tourism revenue.
They are also proposing to raid the treasuries of public authorities, to force Native American tribes to collect cigarette taxes, and to restructure the state’s tobacco bonds.
And Mr. Paterson remains politically weak, with a dismal standing in the polls and an inability to provide forceful leadership, critics say.
The impasse involves a fundamental disagreement. The Paterson administration argues that the state must begin to reckon with severe future deficits, and this view appears to have the support of Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. Senators prefer to take temporary measures and push off the day of reckoning as long as possible.
Budget experts are paying close attention. They say how the deficit is closed is as important as closing it. Not only will the negotiations affect the state’s enormous future deficits — out-year gaps, in budget parlance — but bond rating agencies are scrutinizing the process.
“The next three months will be critical to the state’s credit rating,” Moody’s Investor Service said last week, in an analytical note that rattled the capital.
“The announcement of out-year gaps is not in and of itself an issue,” Emily Raimes, an analyst at Moody’s, said in an interview. “What we look at is how they solve them. If they solve them with one-time measures, that’s going to increase the gaps in future years, and at some point they get so large it becomes difficult to solve them.”

I definitely agree with this, but only if things continue to stay the way they are now. What everything really depends on is what, if any, legislation comes out of Albany in the next month. That being said, I'm numerically speaking next in line to get processed, and I'm not expecting any sort of letter or communication in the forseeable future. Truth be told I just don't trust, or more accurately said, expect lawmakers in Albany to do the what is right and necessary. It truly is sad, but the reality we are faced with.

The whole Tiger Woods thing seems like an awful big media frenzy for nothing. I'm not sure that he's handling it the right way. He's left the media to speculate wildly by being so absent. He leads as much of a private life as possible given he's one of the most prominent sports figures in the world... possibly just a continuation of that. Though, I'd be pretty curious about the matter as an investigating police officer given that he's blown off three interviews.

Have you actually driven one for 12 hours in full pack? As I have said in the past, the senior guys sing the praises of the 9C1 Caprice with an LT1 from the performance aspect. I'm not a believer in the new one. The Challenger is a major disappointment all the way around. The Charger is a joke as a performance platform and negligible at best as a police vehicle. The new Caprice is based on the US version of he Holden Statesman which looks slightly larger than the G8. I just don't see it being that great of an "office". I guess I'm just not a fan of GMC all the way around. Why can't we all have issued Mustangs for patrol? The base V6 is now going to be a turbo 305 horse afterall :D

"In October and November, General Motors and Ford, respectively, announced their own plans for all-new police cars that will be “purpose-built” -- that is, specifically designed and built as police cruisers."
"One notable feature in the future Caprice PPV will be front seats that are “sculpted” to conform to the shape of the various items that police officers carry in their equipment belts. “So, it’s a more comfortable seat for officers, many of whom spend long hours behind the wheel,” said Goebel."

The only 100% guaranteed way to know that there is no class in 2010 is to wait until January 1, 2011. I've heard rumors of classes and rumors of no classes. Yes, I agree. Supervisors are especially lining up to retire. Of the 12 supervisors in my zone, 10 of them are eligible to retire. And several of us are actually starting to talk about it. Just wait until we start 10 hour shifts (yuk).
Once it gets nearly impossible to get a day off (we are not there yet) many of us will go, thereby making the problem worse. I've already had to cancel my scheduled vacation over Christmas week because it would short us. I mean, i guess I could still take it off, but that would screw the guys left to work.

I will however be working out all the finances required to drop a 'slightly' modified version of the new aluminum block in my car in 3 years when the aftermarket kicks in. DWI suspect kicks trooper in groin
Published: Monday, December 28, 2009
TOWN OF WASHINGTON — A state trooper was kicked in the groin by an agitated female during her arrest for aggravated DWI on Saturday evening, according to police.
Police said a Trooper responded to Mabbettsville Road in the Dutchess County town for a report of a personal injury auto accident, during which the operator rolled over her 2000 Subaru numerous times. The passenger was transported to Sharon Hospital with a head injury.
When he found the operator of the vehicle, Morgan P. Stewart, 32, of Pine Plains to be highly intoxicated, Reilly arrested her. Police said she kicked the trooper in the groin and resisted arrest as she was placed into custody. She was transported to state police barracks in Poughkeepsie where she was tested and found to have a BAC of .22 percent, nearly three times the legal limit, police said.
Stewart was charged with felony aggravated drunken driving, misdemeanor resisting arrest and the traffic violation of driving too fast for conditions. She was issued a ticket to appear in Town of Washington court.

lol, that is hilarious! I guess you finally broke your cherry (or cherries) with the DWIs - no pun intended of course!
I hope you used your pepper spray on her. Everyone forgets about the pepper spray and rolls around with a suspect and someone gets injured. Then a supervisor has to do paperwork. Pepper is just one simple form and you are done with no lasting injuries and your suspect usually is very compliant after wards!
Anyways, good job but it looks like you gave an AT for a resisting. That is automatic arraignment... Plus no charge for the kick in the groin???

I hope you used your pepper spray on her. Everyone forgets about the pepper spray and rolls around with a suspect and someone gets injured.
I've found pepper to be an extremely effective tool when outdoors. It's less than pleasant for the person administering it though when you are in one of the tight spaces we often find ourselves within... or happen to be the unfortunate Trooper that is hands on with the suspect when he is peppered. I've experienced all three scenarios more than once.

DWI's can make great stories.
Back in the day.
Shift Sgt was an old USMC who liked to sing songs on mids by himself in the barracks. Brought a DWI into the barracks, both of us were carrying her.
Why you ask, was she that drunk ? No, she had no legs ! One of those vans with controls on the steering stick. She had lost her legs somewhere in her drunken state.
Turned out she blew a huge number near .30. (back in the day we didn't transport to hospital) and we called a relative to come "pick her up". But it was a far distance to make the transfer. We go back on patrol, 15 minutes later get call to return to barracks.
Sgt says, "Get her out of here, she is screaming and I can't concentrate on my reports and my songs."
Informed that she had people enroute, the old Marine says; "I could care less, she is gone. Put her outside, she can't get away !"
So we handcuffed her to the flag pole in front of the barracks.
Problem solved, luckily for her is was summer.

Yes we get peppered in the academy. I could use some of that Saber Red stuff. I've heard about some of the reactions that recruits have had in the more recent academies... ouch. Another downside of pepper is having to listen to the suspect complain pretty much non-stop through the entire arrest. Although, I completely agree with GrayPatriot's sentiments. I've seen how effective it is and have no problem grabbing for it.

Hey All,
Just wanted to give a quick shout, say hi, and let everyone know I'm over halfway through my Iraq vacation. I hope I don't miss the next class!, I'm so close, but I guess if they isn't going to be one for a while, I'll just volunteer for a vacation to the 'Stan, not like I haven't been there before though, haha.
Ok, thanks again to everyone that keeps my family safe while I'm away, stay safe, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

You old geezers that could retire need to realize that you are working full time for usually less than 50% of your current salary.
Math generalized ;
Current pay= 100K.
Current retirement= 50 %
If retired you get = 50K
You are working full time for that other 50K, for less than starting pay for new Trooper.
Open up some spots all the way up the promotional ladder !

Tupper Lake up in the woods. Decent homes under 100k, on water 300k
Golf; Tupper Lake Country Club, 18 hole course, $500 a year membership.
Ski; Big Tupper, just re-opened with volunteers, $ 15 lift ticket.
Fish; Tupper Lake a big lake, big ice fishing tourny, and summer fish as well.
Skido's; Trails everywhere in Adirondacks.
SP barracks across from ice cream store...
Too small; Saranac Lake 1/2 hr away, Lake Placid another 15 minutes.

Yes sir, unfortunately this weather and the unbelievable amount of taxes makes it impossible for someone coming out of college basically owing a house to live. Also the weather plus many other things make me miserable here. I will be attending University of South Florida in the fall and finally playing Division I baseball. I'm very excited, it's a new beginning and I will be able to apply and process with the FHP as well. I'll never forget NY and the Troopers here and will be posting in this thread for hopefully years to come. You have all been an enormous help to me and keeping me on the straight and narrow. I thank you for that, please stay safe out there.

Here's the latest I've heard.
1.) State employees being furloughed 1 day a month this year to save the state money. Heard this from a backroom guy.
2.) With no classes in the near future and retirements continuing, redeployment of Troopers, based on seniority, in fat stations/zones/troops to stations/zones/troops that are short. "For the good of Division". Heard this from a Sgt... don't know if I believe it or not since I don't trust anyone above the rank of Trooper (something I learned in the Air Force).

Do you guys have mileage clause in your contact where you get paid some small stipend if you have a longer than "normal" commute ?
NJSP used to pay .10cents per mile over 40 miles each way (82 miles back and forth = .20cents per day !). Worst I have heard of was one poor guy was 116 miles EACH way for an 8 hour gig on the GS Parkway. Couple of months of tuning in $400+ monthly mileage claims and he got trannied within the mileage limit.
Story; I put in a claim for 47 miles each way or $1.40 each trip, couple of months later a Lt at Troop HQ called me in and told me I was under "his personal" investigation for illegal mileage claim. He had driven to my house and clocked one way to the station which was 42 miles. He thought he had a biggie , $1.00 a day. Till I asked him what way he drove ? He took one way, as the crow flies (with local highways, traffic, multiple traffic lights), me I took the faster way (all Interstate). There was nothing in the regs that covered that problem.
Goes along with the Troop commander I stopped one night. Walked up to his unmarked, he slurs, why don't you have you hat on ? (It was too windy, they always blow off on the Turnpike.). "Captain, I stopped you for DWI and have called in your plate number as a DWI stop on the Troop radio."
I wonder why I missed out on some of those promotions/Defective assignments I put in for...

if you are involuntarily transferred, you get a piddling sum for anything over 30mi......but we are bound to the route "as the crow flies", as you put it.

This doesn't look good for a future academy:
Here are selected highlights from Gov. David Paterson's budget plan for the coming fiscal year.
- No state police training class. With New York's crime rate down 28 percent in a decade, no recruits for the second straight year, with an estimated two-year loss of 269 positions through attrition by April 2011 from a high of some 4,900 officers.

OTSEGO COUNTY, N.Y. – A State Police Trooper was killed in a car crash in Otsego County. It happened just before 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Town of Morris.
State Police say Trooper Jill Mattice, 31, was killed when her police car hit a tractor trailer on Route 23. Mattice died at the scene. She was a six-year veteran with the State Police, working out of the Oneonta barracks.
Mattice was assigned as the School Resource Officer for the Unadilla Valley Central School and Franklin School Districts and was on her way home when the crash happened.
Police say the tractor trailer was driven by F.M. Saggese, 33,of West Oneonta.
State Route 23 has been shut down for several hours as police investigate the cause of the crash.

This is cross posted from another thread but wanted to put it here as well since I've finally been able to piece a few words together.
I traded verbal jabs with Jill almost every morning...friendly, fun ones of course. She could always take a good joke and give it back just as bad. I can remember one time in particular that she overtanned in a tanning booth big time and myself and another trooper at the station were relentless.
Tomorrow is my first day back to work where Jill will not be there. I was lucky enough to not have to go to the scene but tomorrow will be the realization for me when she's not sitting there next to us before we all get ready to hit the road. Work is going to be very different for quite awhile.
Jill was a mentor to many, especially active in trying to help young girls make good decisions. She worked at the State Police Summer Program as well as an SRO. She was a leader and touched many lives.
RIP Jill....I've said it several times but I am heartbroken for your family and helpless in dealing with our peers. God took a good one and you will be sorely missed.
We're a strong group and we'll get through this, I believe I work at one of the best stations possible as far as camaraderie goes. We're very tight and that's what will guide us.
