Anyone have the list of weapons that are comparable with issued wepons? Like what was acceptable in the academy? (For SDLEA or LVMPD)

I'm not sure about your academies, but in mine we could carry DAO, DA/SA or striker fired weapons made by Glock, Colt, H&K, Sig, S&W, Ruger and a few others. Basically, no junk, no single actions(unless issued by a sponsoring dept), no revolvers.

No junk but you could carry a Ruger? hehe...
I was hoping MattG could offer up the current method used by LVMPD. Are you issued a S&W or are you given a choice?
P.S. I know what the website says. I think it's outdated.

What makes you think the Ruger is junk? It may not be the prettiest pistol out there, but it is reliable and that's what matters.

Well, off-topic here, and certainly anecdotal, but I sent three p89's back to the factory in 1997 and 1998 for feed/ejection problems. The second pistol had a problem with misfiring as well. Maybe it's just me, but those are pretty good odds that something was amiss at the factory. I finally bought an SP101 that I loved, and carried for five years or so, and I have my obligatory 10/22 in the closet, so I don't knock Rugers in general, just wouldn't spend my money on an auto.
While I don't care how 'pretty' a weapon is, I do care how pretty the casting is, and how pretty the feed ramp is, etc. When I say junk, I am referring to manufacturing standards. I'm sure people have wonderful rugers that shoot thousands of rounds with no problem, I haven't. My cheap gun is a Makarov that will shoot 9x18, .380, and whatever else I shoehorn in and has never ever had a jam, stovepipe, misfire or any other malfunction. It's also pretty accurate. Best $100 gun I ever owned!
Back to the topic, does anyone know what they issue/allow in VEGAS?

I guess I just haven't had the bad Luck w/ rugers.
Mak's gotta agree, I had a buddy who had his Deep blued on the slide and hard chromed on the frame and he also had the trigger polished. He was replacing a PPK that was unreliable and even with all this work it was less than the cost of the PPK. Sweet lil gun. I'd love to do mine that way.
OK, OK, back to LVMPD.

For anyone reading this to find out the answer, MattG was kind enough to shed some light:
LVMPD cadets are issued a stainlessS&W 9mm (used and hard to clean) if they do not own an acceptable weapon.
Acceptable weapons include those semi-automatic handguns in calibers 9mm-.45,*manufactured by reputable companies including Ruger. MattG mentioned they need to be black or blue, but I think some guys get away with having a stainless gun.
At the cessation of the academy, graduates may choose to keep the issued weapon, or are issued a voucher to be used towards the purchase of a duty weapon.
MattG has confirmed that it may be considered corny to carry the issue weapon as a duty sidearm.
Please note this info is just hearsay, and may be utter BS by the time YOU are in the academy. LVMPD is a 'dynamic' agency. :D
*Please don't ask or start a discussion whether .45 gap, .11mm johnson, .50cal blosk, 9x20mm cartman or .43 styer guns are acceptable. Who knows? Just buy a freakin' .40 cal and shut up. If you insist on knowing specifics, please call a LVMPD TAC officer and ask. (702)229-something...
