Okey, I'm going to school right now to get my CJ degree and im writing a term paper on speed measuring devices, (Radar Laser and Vascar) well I have the Radar and Laser down, however I know little to nothing about VASCAR I know its time/distance to get velocity but exactly how does it work, and what are its advantages/disadvantages over radar and laser?

Thanks in advance

VASCAR will not set off a RADAR detector.

Can be used while moving (LASER can not).

It is basically a timing function, possibly as simple as a set (known) distance, and the time it takes to go that distance.

Vascar can be used parking on an on ramp and timing between marks in the road.

Vascar also can use triangulation to get your speed. you can park far away and time for example how long it takes to cover the time between a sign and a telephone pole for example. you have to park in an exact place for it to work.

One of the best methods is parking off the road and let the violator go by and flip the time switch. you catch up to the violator and you have the speed within .1 mile/hr

Its been around since the 60's or 70's

Wow, does anybody still use VASCAR? Is it actually still taught as part of an academy? I'm more than 7 years out of the academy and it was never taught (or even mentioned) in my academy. The only reason I know it was because I had some older FTO's and CJ professors.

When I first was hired it was still used, but I haven't seen anyopne use VASCAR in years. While I was trained on it so many years ago, I personally, have never used it for enforcement.

I thought it went the way of the dinosaur.

The hand-held laser units can detect speed from time/distance just as Vascar. It is one of the options on our Stalker.
