I don't think you are going to get much of a response. Forum members here tend to be very candid. It is not unusual for them to vent about problems within their agency, or to offer personal insight and opinions on law enforcement that conflict with the official position of their respective departments. In turn, this could subject them to disciplinary action (I've seen this happen on another forum).

It's one thing if a forum member spontaneously volunteers their agency affiliation up front, but if they don't, it's considered impolite to ask.

You bring up an interesting point. If the offs. views are accurate & can be substantiated then wouldn't it be safe to say they aren't bringing discredit to their Dept., which is what they're usually charged with, but rather simply voicing a truthful observation? I bring this up only because I hear how we're supposed to be so honest, etc, etc., then when we are, offs. get in trouble. I haven't seen it firsthand so I don't know the consequences but I've always been troubled by this inconsistency. So since you brought it up, what's your (& others ) opinion?

You're right. On appeal, a terminated officer might get his job back. Or, he might not.

In the mean time, he would have to endure around 12 months of anxiety, waiting for an appeals hearing to be calendared and then for an administrative law judge to carefully weigh the evidence and render an opinion. In the mean time, he would have no wages or health insurance with which to support his family and he probably would be unemployable with another agency because his old department terminated him for cause. And I almost forgot, while unemployed and unable to support his family, he's going to have to find lots of money to pay the attorney representing him in his appeal. Then if the judge rules in his favor, he has to hope his department doesn't appeal the mater to superior court, in which case he will remain unemployed, broke and looking for even more money to pay his attorney while the new court decides the matter.

I don't know about you but, that's way too big a price for me to pay just to prove I am right and my department is wrong. It's a lot easier to just be discrete in my postings.

I am soon to be moving to Ohio and plan on starting the Academy in August. I will be living just south of Akron in Green. I am planning to go to Traynor's Police Academy. Looking for friends and advice.

I am originally from NE Ohio, around the neck of the woods that you will be moving to. Right now, the competition for LEO jobs are extremely keen in NE Ohio. The job openings are very limited, especially for the suburbs. (I have a family member who works for Summit County S.O.) This has been the case for many years now. :(

You should be willing to relocate to other parts of Ohio if you are having trouble finding employment around Akron. (Columbus, Cincinnati, and Dayton areas.) If you'd like more information or advice, PM me. Good luck, and happy Turkey Day. :D ;)

Thank you for your reply I would like to get started on a s.o. I am willing to relocate but will not be able to do it for a few years b/c my g/f will be attending college. Hopefully there will be an opening somewhere close in a year for a 22y/o female cop. Happy thanksgiving to you and your family as well.

Ditto what B&G said.... paying jobs are quite scarce

.......and if you are open enrollment....you have to worry about your eligibility expiring before you get a job at all

I too went to Traynor's. 133 has it spot on, Dave...errr....I'm sorry "Chief Traynor" is a friggin idiot in it for the money. I promise you he'll make a ton of sexist comments and chalk it up to "you'll hear it on the street" so get used to it. The instructors are really good though, and for how often you'll have to deal with Traynor (not very often in comparison to the others) it's not really that bad.

Good luck!

Well with all the down sides to Traynors and the trouble with open enrollment would you still recomend it? I would like to start with a local SO and then maybe go to a PD but I plan to only be in Ohio only a few years while my girl goes to college. Then we plan to move back to the Missouri area maybe and I thought if I could get a few years under my belt it would be easier to move.

Thanks always for the advice

If I were you I would bust my arse as soon as I step foot in the state looking for a commission. Don't wait until after you're through the academy. Apply to the reserves where you live, several PD's auxilarys, etc. School will be a decent chance to find some commissions too if you have people in your class that are with a department. It is hard to keep your commission when you go through open enrollment, but most people wait until they're done. If you start before you won't have to worry about the clock ticking down from the day you graduate.

I went open enrollment in Ohio and the best I could do was a campus police job in NE Ohio. I wouldn't recommend spending my money on any academy in Ohio. Apply in Atlanta, I was hired within four months, went through their 19 week academy and I've been on the streets for 7 months now. Don't waste your time up north, it's not worth it.

I chose Ohio because that is where we are moving to. I did not choose it because of the academy. I can't just move to some other state for a better academy. That is completely unpractical.

thanks anyway,

From what I have heard Traynor's is good for nickle and diming ya. I went to the Stark State Academy, which was pretty decent. Expensive, but good, alot of the instructors are from the Stark County S.O., we are also hiring.

If you could do it all over what academy would you go to? I am looking for a place to get started. I would really like to work for a S.O. first. I want to get into corrections. I almost got on with a S.O. in Kansas but they decided I was to young after 3 months of tests and waiting. I would love to find out more about working for Stark County. Please send me a private message if you have any other advice.
Thank you for all your time,

If corrections is going to be your bag, right now the Delware County Sheriff's Office (north of Columbus) is screaming for C.O.'s to work their newly opened jail facility. Starting wage is about $14.00 an hour, if I'm not mistaken. Not to mention good benefits. Do a google search and access their website for more information. :D

Stark county is in the midst of building a new jail facility, too. :D Check it out on their website.

Thank you for the info. That sounds great. I only have two problems with that first Columbus is to far away to drive to everyday for work. We will be living north of Canton. My second problem is that I have no real experience and am very nervous about getting my first job. How willing are the local SOs to give a young girl (who might I add is very determined and has always wanted to be a cop) a chance?

Nowadays agencies are happy just to get enough people that can get through the whole process ( AKA jump through hoops) . Our agency just published its 2004 annual report and from 1999 to 2004 we disqualified 68.8% of applicants. In 2004 alone, 75.8% of the applicants were disqualified. In 2001 (the year I was hired) only 6.8% of the applicants were hired. From what I have seen, getting good people in the door is the #1 priority. Starting in the jail (as much as people hate it) is actually a great way to get experience, learn faces (potential suspects when you get to the road), etc.

I'm an officer in the Dayton area and have heard some good things about the Sinclair Academy and the Clark State Academy. I personally graduated from Lima Technical College but there are no jobs in that area. LTC was nice because you can get your associates and your OPOTA cert in the same two years or just take the basic academy. Also if you interested Montgomery County SO is hiring CO's and for some unknown reason if you want to live in the city of Dayton they are about 120 officer's short ( not recommended ).

I went through Northeast Training Academy in Orrville, Ohio. It was a good academy. They use Chiefs and Officers from the local Pds and the S.O. to teach. There's a lot of rivalry between Traynors and NE. The commander of NE is pretty good guy. He also teaches the criminal justice at the local career center. He is also a retired LEO.

Remember, a small percentage of your training comes from the academy. Most of it comes from being on the job. Unlike a full-time academy (ie. the Ohio Highway State Patrol Academy, Akron, or Columbus city), open erollment academys are just like factories. They will take whoever is willing to pay the money (and pass a background check) and give them enough knowledge and skill to pass the test. NE has about 30 cadets sign up for classes every six months. That means anywhere up to 60 cadets (assuming an unrealistic 100% pass rate) are looking for jobs yearly. That doesn't even consider what Traynors or the other academys are putting out.

So definately check out the Auxilaries and Reserves units. If you get in with a reserve or aux unit keep looking for paid commisions. A lot of my fellow class mates keep getting told they'll be put in for part-time or full-time positions but I think the departments are just happy where these guys are "free labor".

Like the others are saying, the jobs openings are scarce. In this area alot of the job opening information comes through the grapevine and not public postings. So you should brush up on your networking skills.

I work in a Columbus burb dept. I spent two years at as a Deputy before looking for the big money. I miss the county because I grew up there. Get on a small agency to get your feet wet, then shoot for the top. Good luck

Cincinnati is giving their exam this spring. They have their own academy and pay you while you go through training. Be advised, though, that the hiring process is exceedingly long and often frustrating from lack of information. It took me 1.5 years from exam to academy acceptance. However, it is an excellent academy and I'm very excited to start. Good luck whichever route you choose.

The OPOTA standard for the physical agility testing...especially the 1.5 mile run is hurting most academies ...and new recruits......Alot of the departments are using these times as there entrance exams for the hiring process.....but Columbus Ohio is hiring...and I believe cleveland Ohio is hiring....

Fairly certain the Columbus filing period for their test is over today (10-06-06). Just be aware that if you did take the test, the process is long. I took the test last year in November, and I'm set to go to my Oral Board on the 11th of October. Once you get to your Initial Interview and Polygraph, it seems to go a little faster. Good luck to everyone.
