Fulton workers fear layoffs on way

Wayne Hines once found comfort in the certainty of his firefighting career.

Almost a decade of public service to Georgia's largest county will do that for you. But now every day Hines worries his days with Fulton are numbered.

"I figured on retiring from Fulton County after 30 years and sitting down and watching my grandkids," said Hines. "Now, it looks like I'll have another patch on my sleeve. I wonder what will happen to me. Will I have to sell my house and move? Will I have to work three jobs? The main thing is the uncertainty."

The fear Hines, 41, may lose his job is well-founded.

When Sandy Springs opens Dec. 1, Fulton County will no longer need nor be able to pay for about 600 positions

one would think that Sandy Springs would hire some of these people...but then again, I'm a crazy thinker

for the money that sandy springs generates, those that will work for them , police, fire ect....will most likely get paid well! It will take much longer than 6 months for them to get on there feet, the money alone to purchase firefighting equipment/property will take more time than that! Oh well they got what they wanted!!! both City and county taxes.......hope they enjoy it.

They willbe starting at 42K (entry-L). They can not hire until they name a cheif. Nevertheless this still confruses me! From what the papers and t.v has been saying is that the city is suppose to be up and ready by Dec. How is this possible???

Supposibly the reason for pay to start so high is that alot of the officers will be transfers of course, But they will not be able to keep their ranks. To me that sounds like good news for the rest of Ga agencies because they will raise their pay to keep competative (spl)!!

Australian, Irish, New Zealand and UK Cops.

It's hard to imagine the above happening in our countries, but is it a sign of things to come?

Long live our various Police Associations/Unions.

Cheers.
