At the risk of asking a dumb question, what are the rules and regulations on facial hair? It seems I never see a cop with a goatee, but do see detectives with one occasionally. Most PD websites list lots of codes, but I can

Department policies are different. In my department, you can have a moustache, but no beard or goatee. The city allows goatees, so we have a bunch of city cops that walk around looking like Charles Manson.

I have never encountered a Law Enforcement agency in North Carolina that allows a goatee or beard for that matter. Most PDs you can have a mustache though. The Highway Patrol allows NO facial hair. Before you decide to enter into Law Enforcement, you should have the discipline to shave off the zz top beards. Dont ever show up to an interview with facial hair. A mustache neatly trimmed would be acceptable, but to me anything else looks unprofessional. Helpful advice, thats all.
