Anyone know how large departments decide who gets to work in traffic detail?

I'll be eligible for special assignment after 2 years, would like to get into traffic, just wondering what criteria are used...

Why don't you just ask the department you want to work for or work for if you already are on the job?

At the only department I worked for big enough to have specialty units, we flew in a witch doctor, and he would throw goat entrails on pieces of papers with our names on them, he would then "read the entrails" and determine the best Officer for the job, of course we had a four hundred pound guy in the mounted unit...

most specialty units i'm familiar with require a written request on your part, an oral board, and a review of your jacket. It seems that most of the time, how well you get along with the ranking officers already on the unit often determines whether you'll be chosen. Putting in volunteer time also helps.

Here it is pretty much seniority based. Just a few exceptions.

Over here they put you through an interview, reports, recomendations and then say seniority is a factor but as soon as the process is finished they look at the names and see whos daddy rings them or whos daddy they know.

Then the remaining spots are done fairly.

Ahh. Even three years ago, cops were flippant and rude to civilians asking questions in ask-a-cop. Nothing changes!

(I thought I wanted to be in traffic-hahahahahaha)

In your responses I read a great suggestion of actually asking your own department since you were a cop already, one pretty funny answer that took some imagination and 3 answers about how other departments handle the issue yet you felt the need to re-open a 3 year old thread to bash fellow officers here. And it wasnt being flippant and rude to a civilian because you were a cop when you asked the question........ I guess cops in your neck of the woods cant bust another cops chops when he asks a stupid question.

No, I wasn't even in the academy yet. Just a starry-eyed applicant.

So what?

What's the big issue with re-opening old threads? I guess once time has passed, the information isn't pertinent any more? I noticed the trend already, and re-reading some old posts, noticed that I was the recipient back then. Sorry for commenting.

...to bash fellow officers here.

I don't know if calling a forum post 'flippant' or 'rude' qualifies as bashing, compared with, "I guess cops in your neck of the woods," blah blah blah. You tell me which bashes you more:

Fuzz, I think you were unobservant and inattentive when you said I was a cop when I posted the question.

-or-

Fuzz, I guess cops in your neck of the woods can't look at join dates to see someone wasn't a cop.

As far as actually bashing fellow cops, you're damn right I will, when and if it's appropriate. Almost every thread in ask-a-cop becomes a chop-busting session, regardless of the sincerity of the question. I wasn't asking how to get out of a ticket, or telling half of a story about my cousin getting arrested and asking why, or asking if 'trying' PCP would DQ me from being a cop. I wasn't asking for a telephone number I could look up myself. Being an applicant, I was discouraged from contacting my dept for anything other than necessary hiring process matters. I asked a legitimate question, (a stupid question, I guess- I mean, every civilian applicant should know how promotions are done) after searching, hoping to get an insight into politics, and a 'real' answer. The first two responses were confusing. Notice that after I expressed that, the following posts were great!

Chop-busting is fine, great even. Between us. But there are some folks on here who shouldn't be responding to the public if all they're going to do is make fun of them. It's the public, and they (in general) don't exactly love us as it is. I apologize for pointing that out, or bumping it, or whatever.

My posts speak for themselves ref: my attitude towards the public, and towards recruits and potential recruits that post here. If someone deserves a flaming, by all means, light 'em up. But if they don't, why not be...I don't know, nice? I was posting to comment on that observation, and I'm sorry for dong so. Not sure why you took it personally...:(
