Hello Everyone, I'm a Captain in the Marines applying for the position of Supervisory Avaition Enforcement Officer with JPATs which is Con Air. I have a panel interview next week. My questions are for the federal guys who have completed and past a panel interview:

1. What type of questions can I expect? (Situational, ethical...etc..??)

2. I have been arrested for assault three times (barfights...I was the good guy I promise!) The last one being almost seven years ago, will they ask about my past criminal history if it doesn't apply to the job? (PS one stuck, the others dismissed)

3. Considering my service in the Marine Corps with two tours to Iraq as an Infantry officer, will this overshadow my past mistakes?

4. I have a TS/SCI clearance will it transfer?

5. I have conducted medivacs, called for fire while controlling air and manuvering an infantry company but for some reason I am nervious as hell, any tips to get over this?

6. The Job is for Merit promotion, I am coming to the table with only Veterans Preferance, where do I stand, Disadvantage or Advantage?

7. In the Marines my primary mission wasn't to transport detainees, it was to capture or kill the enemy, but my company and I where responsible for the capture and transportation of nearly 75 suspected terrorists, I have extensive training and real world experiance in detainee handling. Saying that, will I be at a disadvantage to the guys who work at Con Air who are applying for the position?

Any imput would be appricated a lot...

Your clearance will not transfer nor will it matter if you had one or not.
Your arrests are not looking good, whether or not you say you were the bad guy or not. Assaults for arrest are not a good thing. Most agencies it will be an auto DQ. Thing is, how is it you are applying for a Supervisor Aviation Officer postion, is this LE related?

Your experience in the military: Your arrests will not overpower nor will it be overlooked from your arrests.

As far as the questions they will ask. I am sure they will ask about your military background as well as your criminal. Be prepared to explain everything.

Thanks for the two cents irishlad2nv... Any Federal employees out there who have done a panel interview for a similar position? Not nessissarily an LE position but a support position?

I have been told I will not be DQ'ed for the assault from several Federal Agencys so Im not sweating that.

According to OPM, who conduts 90% of all background investigations. You're TS clearence should carry over to the next agency. Altough they may investigate you more depending on the position you are applying for.

Hey Cap, not to contradict Irish above, but the Fed is hot right now to hire vets. First, you have a 5 point preference just walking in the door, which means they have to look at ya. The fights, shouldn't be an issue, unless they were fighting LEO's or something else. I'll assume they occurred prior to you getting in the Corps? If so, they will be chalked up to doing something stupid when you were young. (Unless you have a super hard *** panel of questioners...but likely you won't). Your TS will...and won't...transfer. It's complicated, but basically, clearances nowadays are granted/eliminated by the individual units/departments/agencies. In the old days, it was only the access that was closed out when you left an agency, you kept the clearance. Now, with the computers, the clearance goes away as well....however, if you immediately transistion into a fed job from the Corps, they can get the clearance back in a matter of days, depending on how fast their CPAC operates. Going in with the TS/SCI also helps negate the other assault issue. Esp in going to work for the Fed.

Feel free to PM me for any add'l help, I've done our interview boards here several times, as well as others in civvie law enforcement.

Time for Marine speak:
The Interview: It's no worse than standin tall in front of "the man" explaining why LCPL Snuffie forgot his (insert required item of 782 gear here) for the latest op. Probably a lot better. But, you've no doubt done that, so this will be a piece of cake.

Again, skipper, I think you are what the Fed is looking for at this point. Proven leader, combat vet, the whole package. Do your normal morning PT plan prior to the interview; it'll help you relax.

Again, feel free to PM.

Captain Sir. First of all, let me say thanks for your service. I am also in the military and just wish you the best of luck with your process. I am a 8 year veteran officer with a large city police department. So I can understand what your going through. My past issues even as a juvenile came up during the hiring process with is understandle. Being in the military or not, the department just wants to make sure they have the right person for th position. I know a lot people in the military that would not certainly make in the police department just by the background checks. I am certain your issues and past will come up and I advise you to be honest but also tell your side of the story and hopefully they look at the whole picture and not just concentrate on the three fights. Trust me, they will know everything about you alread by conducting extensive background checks especially in these times of terrorism. And I wouldn't certainly expect any less from the Marshall's service. They are a hard department to get into. However, if you for some reason don't get hired there, there are many other departments (police, sheriff's, federal, state, and local) that are accepting applications all the time. That is one thing about this field of occupation, it is a growing profession. Just go in there being your professional self and do your best. Anyways, I do wish you the best of luck sir!!
