Hey guys maybe you can help me out. I posted a question in the job forums but recieved no response. I am an LEO in MI with 5 yrs expierence. I was wondering if any of you have heard or have been through the Ft. Lauderdale hiring process. Is it tough to get in? Is there any internal problems? Is it a good place to work? How is the cost of living compared to the pay? Any other info you can give would be great. Thanks.

Ft Lauderdale has a good reputation. Their pay is about the same as other local agencies. Around $40k to start, more with experience. There are other agencies close by that are hiring. Housing has gotten REALLY expensive lately. It will not be uncommon for a house to run upwards of $400k.

There were talks of layoffs and budget problems, I don't know if this ever happened or not. Their hiring process takes several months, for people out of twon they try to schedule 3 - 4 days for you to take all of their tests.

There are many agencies down here really hiring. Miami-Dade County and Broward County are two local counties that are constantly hiring.

I am sure it will be beneficial but is Spanish a must? I heard I wouldnt have a chance of getting hired because I dont know Spanish. How true is that?

Spanish would be a plus... but I can only ask someones name, date of birth and some basic questions in spanish and even then very poorly. There is always back-up that can help out with translation. So no, spanish is not a requirement by any stretch.

There is a department in Miami-dade (The City of Hialeah) that it would almost be a necissity to speak spanish, not because of hiring requirements, but because of the local population - like if you walk into a McDonald's and try to order in English they don't understand you - it's almost entirely hispanic.

Alot of departments would be interested to get an experienced officer with a few years of experience under their belt, rather than taking a chance on an unknown "rookie" with no experience.

I applied to FLPD a number of years ago...Over 2500 took the test. I ended up 21st on the list...
Of course they took all city residents first, then county, then Florida, then those with higher education. Education is great, but now they had a bunch of 3rd grade teachers playing police...
I was living in Pa. at the time..I am now on West coast SO.....
Great move..Good pay, and weather is OFS !!!!!
Cost of Housing is same as Broward....$400K median range for a 3/2
Central Florida pay less, but homes are cheaper..

Good Luck...

All the regular Uniform Patrol districts operate on a 8 hour day. The individual FTO squads, one per watch, operate on a 4-10 schedule. The talk of 4-10's going throughout uniform patrol is still under discussion apparently. And you are scheduled to recieve a take-home after probation is completed, but not automatically assigned (i.e. vehicle shortages, etc). And I did not know the dept. required a swim-test just as part of the physical exam. I thought only BSO did that.

Would having a 4 Year Degree improve chances of being hired by Miami Dade Police and would it also mean higher starting pay?

ftlaudcop
02-04-2006, 03:23 PM
yr 4 yr degree is worth 80 dollars a month, and that is a state salary incentive, the police dept's and sheriff's dept only care if you have
a h.s. diploma and yr 19 or 21.

Does anyone know how long the hiring process at both Miami Dade and Ft. Lauderdale? Chicago is over a year sometimes 2.

ftlaudcop

well with ft lauderdale....schedule you for testing....back ground./.etc, long civil service list....could be close to a year.

also don't forget your competing with local police officers
who are jumping ship who are are already certified.
so they may sponsor and send to the academy 10 for a year.
