NYPD placement

Just curious if anyone knows anything about the placement of officers when they graduate the academy. What are the odds of being put into housing authority or transit. Placement in the city really doesn't bother me but i would really prefer regular patrol. And if you are placed into HA or transit, how hard is it to transfer out(or do some people think it's better to stay in) after you put time in

These are general rules with some exceptions..When officers graduate from the academy they are usually placed in assignment according to their zip codes of residence. For example, officers who live north of the city will usually be assigned to the bronx or manhattan. Officers who live on Long Island will usually be placed in eastern Queens or in Bklyn. Officers who live in Queens or Bklyn stay in their boroughs or end up in Manhattan. If you are in housing or transit, try and stick it out until the next group graduates the academy, you may decide to stay where you are by then

If you live in Manhattan but south of 59th st, you usually go to Manhattan North..If you live in Manhattan but north of 59 st you go to Manhattan south or the Bronx...Hope that helps..

Well, if you live in Long Island, you are typically going to end up in Brooklyn North or even Brooklyn South...thats what happened to guys in my academy class (July 2005)..after Impact, you may get to go back to Queens...for the guy wanting to do patrol...its a good deal, you get to dabble in everything, while guys in Transit or Housing have smaller numbers and objectives..but!! they are out of the cold most of the time..like everything in life, there are pros and cons..after my 5 years are up and I make sergeant (crossing fingers), I wanna do downstairs to transit..easier to do that than go from transit to a precinct cop..

Sorry that my questions aren't involving the original post but it seems this room has had the most recent postings, so hopefully someone reads these:

- I've seen some policemen of small size take people down and do some amazing things, I was wondering (especially for NYPD since I am going there) what the amount of hand to hand and karate (if any) training there is for policemen and what they go through in order to be so successful at taking down a suspect?

and lastly

- How many years of college do you need to become a detective, and if it is 4 years, why? Wouldn't a man with a decade or two on the street possess just as much know-how as a college grad?


I am just looking for answers, I don't mean to assume college graduates are bad people or anything... I thank anyone who replies for their help and again I apologize for being on the wrong room for this type of question
