Taking the state exam in about 8 weeks. If anyone has taken the state exam, I was wondering if it comes directly from the CMS objectives found throughout the modules ? I believe there are 2 forms of the state exam and I am registered for the CMS version since that is what we have been studying the past 16 weeks.
Also, can anyone recommend or even mention some good study guides for the Florida State exam ? I cant seem to find one tailored towards the CMS format. Thanks in advance....JC

I'm about 99% sure the state exam will be based off the objectives and only the objectives.

I took the State Exam last year. CMS Based training. the exam is easy. infact
you'll see that the tests you took in the academy, are infact the test questions on the state exam. Seriously, if you did good in the academy tests, you'll do fine on the State. Don't sweat it. you've been trained, you might not feel sure about it, but when you need the information it will be there.
Good Luck, Relax, you will do fine.

I'm in an academy right now. Our instructors are telling us that the state exam is taken from the objectives.

Just study the State Course Guide that your academy gave you. That is what the state exam is on. You need to get 80% to pass, and the test is 350 questions long. If you study the guide, especially Interpersonal Skills and Patrol, you will do fine. Also memorize the definitions in the law section and you should have no problem. Sit back an relax, as long as you read the book, you will be ready. As far as other study guides, forget about it. This is a Florida exam and they gave you the material with the answers, just read it, highlight it, and you will be fine. You should of also been taking practice exams right along, and if you scored well, you are ready. Eat a good breakfast and get to the test sight early

I've spoken with 10 people who took the test earlier this week. All but one said that the test easier then the tests we took in the academy, but all agreed that they were the same questions they'd already seen, and all felt that they passed. There are a few study guides available, however none are for the CMS version of the test, so FDLE does not recommend any of them. Luckily, our class created a study guide for each of the modules objectivs, so I plan to review them prior to the test. Good luck.

There are about 25? i think questions that you wont recognize at all.. because they are the trial questions ... but anyway.. two years ago when i took the exam it was off the objectives... i was one of the first classes based on cms... yeah that was a struggle!!! I noticed that they would take the question and flip it around... so just know different versions of some of the questions.. if you are doing good (90%) or better on your tests in the academy, your state will be ok. I also noticed they covered pretty much a little bit of everything. The people in my class that were average in the school struggled on the exam.
hope that helps you.
There are 3 versions of the CMS Exam. All question come from the objectives and they are worded similar as the test you take at the academy. There are 250 questions not 350. Fifty of those questions are control or trial questions that are not graded but are in trial to see if they will be included in future test. You are expected to pass with 80% that means that you can only miss 40 since you are only graded on 200. You have 4 hours to complete the test & trust me when you have questions that are 2 pages long time will fly. At the time of the test you will be giving your sitting arrangement and they sit LEO’s on the right and corrections on the left. Not everybody that takes the test will do CMS. Some apparently are still not on board with the CMS curriculum and are still doing traditional academy work.

The 3 versions of the test go in succession in difficulty from 1 to 3. I took the third version & it had scenario questions that were 2 pages long. I was told that you have about 40 seconds per questions to finish the test. I know that time does fly if you take too long in one question. At one point I was in question 172 & the lady in charge announced the time at 1 hour left, so I had 78 questions to go with several long scenario questions. I had to rush in order to have enough time left to review my answers. Out of 17 in our class that took the test 1 failed. We had a feeling that he would not pass since he was the weakest link out of the bunch.

I - along with 24 others in my class - took the CMS based exam yesterday. Our version was #3, and GEEEEEZ - talk about LONNNNNNG and wordy questions. I also was around 178 when the lady said we had only 1 hour left. I was freaking out because not only did I need to get to 250, but I had 54 questions circled as ones I needed to go back and review. So I had to RUSH and finish 126 questions in that final hour. I used EVERY minute of the 4 hours we were given. There were definitely questions we had NEVER seen while in the academy, so I figured those must be the "experimental" ones the state threw in. Supposedly there are 50 of those. I scored between 91-100 on my academy tests and graduated with a 93 GPA, and still felt like the state test was difficult to finish. I think if there weren't so many long winded questions, I would have felt better about it. There are quite a few of us already planning where we may be taking the next one. I agree with everyone else, in that there is NO study guides out there for this. ALL questions were taken from the objectives. There was between 15%-20% of each subject taken from all six of the module books. That's what it seemed like to me. So...as long as you are pretty comfortable with each section in your books, then you will be fine on the state exam. I have a lot of study guides, but they are NOT in my computer. They are copied pages of the objective pages from out books, with all the answers hand written in. That is what we used for our study group, and we were able to cover a huge amount of information from those. Good luck! At least we have three tries. And some departments gives the state allowance of 180 days from official date of employment to have the passing score.

I take the state test on October 24 and I think I should do well. I have some frinds that just took the test on June 28. I will ask them how it was and what kind of questions were on the test. I was told you could make a 70% on the test to pass, but I would think that 80% is most likely right. My BRC class made study guides made up of the objectives so I hope the state exam is the same. I hate CMS, becuae I could cut the time down by 3 months and I only go half time. My academy is 824 hours long and the last 2 or 3 weeks all we are doing is taking pratice tests. Good luck I am sure you will be fine. Just remember this aint rocket science, cause if it was most of us wouldnt be cops we would be doctors.

I was in the verfy first CMS based class in Broward County. I'll spare you all my thoughts on traditional versus CMS. I personally found the test to be easy. If you pay attention in class, and study, you should not have a problem. Most of the test is common sense. I personally only studied very little, and completed my test in just about 2.5 hours. However, I have always been a good test taker. You are allowed three opportunities to test (pending your department policy) before you have to re-do an academy. I have only heard of a few people needing three times or failing. We had one guy at my department that needed three times, he got his chances, but for other reasons is no longer a police officer.
CMS is an attempt by FDLE to try to bring everybody on board under the same roof. In essence what you learn in Broward or Miami-Dade County will be the same as in Seminole County. Not sure what’s the difference between traditional since I was only taught CMS. I keep on hearing people say that the test itself is easy and that they finish in 2 hours and they got all of the questions right,,,blah,,blah,,,blah. Yet there’s a high failure rate among north and middle counties. I know of a least 12 recruits failing out of Broward at one time. Miami-Dade has at least 1 to 6 failures everytime the test is given.

That is because even though CMS is an ATTEMPT to teach the same thing across the board, different instructors focus on different things. We did not have one single failure from my class with the exception of the guy who failed twice... let's just say he was not the sharpest pencil in the drawer.

Yes! Congrats to you and all others that passed! Unfortunately, out of 24 of us that took the test June 28th, 6 did NOT pass. But....the next test is on the 26th of this month...so hopefully they will all make that one. I would definitely NOT want to work in the jail! I couldn't stand being there for the 3 hours it took us to tour it while in the academy. It takes a special kind of person to be able to handle being there. Good luck to you! Any specific department you looking at? My department is looking for people, but we're in central Florida.

My agency likes to start us off in the jail first. I applied/tested for the road, but only offered the jail. Heard later if I turned it down they probably would have offered me the road, but coming out of the military I didn't have the luxury of turning down a job offer. They did submit my paperwork for my LE EOT, but later said they weren't going to put me through it. Said it would be cheaper to put me through the cross-over which is when you go from CO to LEO. So, I flipped the bill for my EOT and luckily passed the test my first time around. Only had 2 chances to pass my test as you only have a year from when your paperwork is approved, and mine was approved last August, so glad it's all behind me now. Right now my options are to either stay where I'm at for the next 6 months and then go to the road with my current agency, or I'm seriously looking at either St. Lucie county or Martin County SO.
I like my current agency, but the cost of living is crazy here and I'll never be able to afford a house on what I make, so looking to relocate somewhere I can comfortable live on a cops salary. And being dual certified, hopefully I can do some OT in the jail as road OT usually is a set rate and not a ton of it to go around.
LakeLaw
07-07-2006, 07:57 PM
Ohhh, ok! That explains it then. St. Lucie...I had a chance about 7 years ago to buy an acre in Port St. Lucie - paved street, sewer, electric already on it for only $11,000. Boy am I kicking myself now!!! I hear it's getting expensive there too! Our county has grown by leaps and bounds in just the past 20 months! It won't be much longer before all the foreclosures start coming up. You should contact HUD office for a "officer next door" house. They pay 50% of the house price.

has anyone taken a recent Southwest florida criminal justice academy law enforcement test recently? I was just trying to get peoples opinions on how it was and what areas to concentrate on for the studying? Thanks
Any advice for someone preparing for the test after doing the Comparative Compliance/Equivalency of Training program? Not having gone through a Florida academy puts one at a bit of a disadvantage. I have the CMS curriculum on a CD with about 25 PDF files totalling around 2,800 pages. That's a lot to look at on a computer screen. And you can't highlight or write notes in the margins either, lol.

Best advice I can give you is start reading now, hahaha. I printed ALL of it out and read it all once. Did the EOT, then took the state exam a few weeks later and passed first time through. Didn't do the test prep either. Then again, I went through the full Corrections Academy late last year so a lot of the info was repeat for me, just in a different format. Make sure you pay attention to domestic violence and child/elderly crimes.

I just took the CMS exam on 9/11/06. My score was made available yesterday at around 4pm. Found out I passed. I found that the test was MUCH easier than our Module exams. Honestly, if you did alright like I did on the Module exams, than you should pass the state exam with no problems. I put about 3 hours of studying into the exam.
I know everyone says there isn't an CMS/FDLE study guide availble, but I have one from St. Pete's Academy. Everyone in our class that took the test on the the 11th used this study guide, and as far as I have heard, passed. If anybody wants to give the study guide a look, feel free to PM me. I think you'll be suprised when you look at it. It was VERY accurate compared to the actual exam!

I hope y'all are right about how easy the state exam is. I have scored over 90% on all but one module test, so i think i doing fairly good on my module test's. But for some reason i keep thinking that the state exam is gonna suprise me.
I have a question about the layout of test, are the questions all mixed up i.e. question #1 could be about law, and then question #2 could be a DT question. Or are they broke up into sections??
Thanks....J

As far as the state exam goes, questions are at random and do not follow any specific order.
I didn't go through the LEO academy and do the module tests, but from what I've heard module 1 test includes ALL the units in that module.

Each module is a test. Module 1 covers all of the 22 units. You might find that the tests are easier than you think. Don't slack though. Study hard.

i had version 2. there were some scenerios. the thing was, each scenerio only had 1 question. unlike the fbat test that had long scenrios with 4 questions. the scenrios really weren't that bad. they definitely give you enough information to answer the question.

I took the test a month ago. Version 2, and I found it to be excellent. 50 questions were sample(throw out) and the rest were similar to the CMS tests we took in class. I got my results online in about 2 days. Out of 17 in the class, all of us passed. Study, that is my advice. If you leave the test wondering where your brain went, then you passed the exam. I was fried after 4 hours(I took the entire time, took the test and went over it a second time).
Good luck, you will do fine.

I took the Exam this month and passed. I walked out feeling like I had passed. Unlike the CMS tests you take in the Academy (which have many errors), these tests are grammatiaclly correct. 90% of the Exam was formatted with 3 wrong answers and 1 right. The other questions were scenerio based, but very clear. Also you could kinda tell which questions were the throw-outs. Out of 13 of us who took it, 12 passed that I know of.
I have mutiple study guides which I made and used for my tests. If anybody is interested in study guides please e-mail me at johnnoblepi@earthlink.net
With so much of the CMS course being inaccurate or grammatcally incorrect, this cirriculum needs a major overhaul. It's just a shame that my College doesn't have anything to do with the course. I found that the course Module information can be challenged if you submit the right form. Also I find it as being a cop out that you would have to travel to Tallahassee to review your test (if you failed).
Other than that I thought the Exam was easy and so did all of my other classmates. Thank You all for allowing me to comment and stay safe out thier.

I took it 12/13/2006, and have been checking the FDLE website every 5 minutes since. I thought it was tricky coming from out of state. Wish I would have studied harder/more. Part of me thinks I did fine the other part says not so good. I would consult an eightball, may add to the confusion. At this point all I have left is prayers. Good luck to anyone else that's awaiting results.

Found out when I returned to work that they were posted the very next day. crazzzzzzzzzzy!

You too? I guess God is hearing alot of the same prayers. I am prepared to have failed it. I only took the EOT course so I didnt know how to prepare. In addtion, I was sick for two weeks before and was getting up every 20 minutes to blow my nose and clear my congested head. I hope and pray all went well, but if I have to retake it I am more prepared and will just be slowed down in the processes I am in.

This review your sending out. Is it the one thats like 500 pages? Does anyone have any practice tests that helped them study for the CMS LEO state test? Thanks
It's 455 Pages. To be honest, I do have questions that I made up for each module as a study method during class. But, I do not think it is ethical to pass those questions out. Even so, I don't think it would benifiting you if I did.
I'm sure you've heard this too often from your parents while growing up but I am going to say it AGAIN: "You appreciate things more if you have to work for them. Things that are handed to you on a silver platter are usually taken for granted."
I "send out" the exam review as a sense of security, to help calm your nerves. It's up to you to pay attention in class, create your own study material, and to study the exam review. Do these things because the idea of being a "cop" excites you, because keeping your family and community safe is a passion, because you can't see yourself happy and satisified doing anything else.
If you are doing this because it is just another "job opportunity" then you in it for the wrong reason, go back to flipping burgers....
PS... Brising... this isnt directed to you specifically, just a statement of my ethical reasoning.

I am. Can't wait to get it over with. I've got my 11th module test tomorrow. I'm doing pretty good, I usually score in the mid 90s with a couple high 80s (which are probably more due to less studying than hard material).

It's going good. Only 3 more weeks to go. I thought I'd be one of the older ones before I started, but I'm actually right in the middle. I think the age range is from 23 to 46.
I am actually enjoying myself. Some days are definitely better than others but any of it sure beats being out on a submarine. Our instructors are awesome. One is a SWAT guy and the other is a former, or "Reformed" as he says, highway patrolman. They compliment each other very well and we are learning a lot, in spite of the CMS curriculum. Our instructor enlists a lot of his SWAT buddies, narcotics officers, etc. to come in and help, especially with things like firearms, driving, defensive tactics, traffic stops and stuff like that.
A lot of times we hear: "this is what CMS says so remember it for the test, but this is really the way our department does it."
I don't have as much of a problem with the CMS curriculum as I do with the CMS tests. They are just worded horribly and we often get some questions thrown out because of it. One our test questions yesterday literally had 4 correct answers. And you could say "well which one is the most correct" but it wasn't even like that. It seems like the people who write the questions are completely clueless.
How is it going for you? Which academy are you in? I assume you are graduating soon.

ROTFL!!! :D
Have you are anyone in your class every missed any time or days? Weren't you required to write (25??) questions every time you missed? You should realize that those questions get sent to Tallahassee where they are reviewed and some of them make it into the test/exam pool.
So now you know who the clueless people are! haha

Leo_Brat you sending out the same guide I sent. If so I'm glad its being placed to good use.
For those who still haven't taken the State Exam and you get a copy of the study guide. Just remember this is the same as what you studied in the Academy. I took two of the CMS test. Failed the first one due to medication which was making me drowzy. Passed the second one easily (felt more wide awake when I took it the second time around).
Dont sweat the exam. Just study what you have and it will all come back to you. It's not as bad as everybody expects it to be. GOOD LUCK TO ALL.

I want to caution people looking at "CMS State Exam" study guides.
Make sure the Study Guide is for the right test, the one you are taking.
In Florida, there are currently two types of LEO exams for the two types of curriculum's currently in use. The old CMS curriculum/Exam which is being phased out. And the new State curriculum/Exam. That is for anyone starting a police academy after June 1st of 2008.
In addition, the state test questions were written by police officers from all over that state that were sent to Tallahassee by FDLE and then given sections of the curriculum to write the questions on. They were officers that helped write the curriculum for the most part, or officers that the departments identified as being "Subject matter experts" for the topics they were writing questions on. They were also coached on how they were to write the questions. The FDLE State exam questions are all written from the material that covers the objectives listed at the beginning of each section of the current (and past) curriculum.
Also there are questions being "field tested" on the exam each time it is offered. These questions (25 of them) are new questions that are being field tested to see how they do in actual testing circumstances. These do not count as part of your score, so conceivably, you could miss all 25 and still get 100% passing on the state exam. I hear it a lot from my recruits that they saw questions that were very strange on stuff they had never heard of, these were the 25 field testing items more than likely.
As for passing State Exam study guides around. There is nothing wrong with that, you still have to study the material. But what makes you think the material is on the objectives, which is where the FDLE State Exam comes from? Did you check them against the curriculum to make sure they are accurate and the answers are correct? You need to make sure the questions are written int he same style as the ones on the state exam. No true false, not all of or none of the above answer type questions.
May I make a few suggestions for those wanting to study for the State of Florida CMS Exam.
1. Read the objectives at the beginning of each lesson in the text books, that is where the State Exam Questions come from.
2. Use a study guide that you have gotten from a reliable source that is for the correct state exam, the one you are taking.
3. Get a good nights rest before the exam. Do not stay up all night studying, if you don't know it by the night before, you wont know it by test time, and you will just lower your test performance.
This is from FDLE directly:
To ensure validity, the exam questions:
are taken directly from the basic recruit training curriculum.
are written by FDLE members and external Subject Matter Experts.
are reviewed by Subject Matter Experts prior to inclusion on an exam.
are field tested until the item performs appropriately.
will not contain an “all of the above / none of the above” answer option.
Discipline Law Enforcement - Florida CMS
Graded Questions 225
Field Test Questions 25
Total # of Questions 250
Correct # to Pass 179
All examinations contain experimental or “field” test questions. Field test questions expand and improve the bank of questions from which future examinations will be developed. This is a common practice used by national and state examination programs and is a critical step in ensuring the continued validity of the examinations.
Field test questions will NOT be counted when computing the test score. The time allowed for testing has been evaluated to ensure that there is adequate time for completing test questions and field test questions during the allotted four hour examination time.
Questions are multiple choice (4 choices, 1 correct answer) and multiple choice in format.
Just so you know, I helped write the curriculum and some of the State Exam Test Questions, you know, one of those that "does not have a clue".. LOL
I also have reviewed, and give out to my students a State exam study guide that was written by my students, and checked by me. The class that wrote this, all of them passed the exam first try (100% passing rate). So it can't be too bad. The State Exam Study guide and also Study guides for the end of block exams for the current curriculum are posted on the internet for anyone to use and download at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/policeacademytraining/
I highly recommend it for anyone in the academy, or anyone taking the state exam. There are study guides for every Chapter of the curriculum, and a comprehensive set of State Exam Study guides (Its broken down into 5 parts). I can also e-mail you the comprehensive study guide if you PM me your e-mail address if you want to do that instead.
There is a state exam study guide that was written about 12-13 years ago from Broward that is floating around still and is really outdated and should not be used. Its very bad to study outdated material and answers that may be incorrect now, I know I wrote that one back then and would not use it. There is also one that has true false and all of the above or none of the above answers. This is not accurate and does not reflect the style of questions you will see on the state exam. Best to study apples if your eating apples.
I am going to write a comprehensive guide to the state exam and post it here in the near future. To help out those that want the help.
Be safe and study hard..

I went through EQ 08-5 in Brevard in November, and though I've been a cop for over a decade on a fairly busy DC-area department, it was actually a good time. The key is probably just telling yourself to turn off that instinctual "what the hell are they gonna teach me that I don't already know" attitude that we tend to get with each year that passes. Honestly some of the DT stuff (takedowns, etc.) was a nice refresher. We did not do the PAT, which I found odd. There definitely is a "give us your money and you'll get your certificate" vibe to it, which could be somewhat detrimental when you've got people who can't shoot or drive.
I'm actually writing to thank the person who took the time to post those lengthy exam-review/sample test materials. Though the answers are obvious 90% of the time (due to the way the questions are worded, not because I'm a genius), it appears to be of good value.
I take the (old version, as they called it) test on January 28th in Tampa. I did stay for the day of exam review during EQ, but like everyone else in my class, I thought it would be actual material review, not simply a battery of practice tests which told me what I already know, which is that my only problem will be with Florida-specific issues. I've tried studying, but because so much of it is like rookie-school review, it's somewhat painful.
Anyway, good luck to all of you going through this process. Right now it's 8 degrees here, so needless to say, I'm highly motivated to get down to FL even if it means giving up all this time and starting over (not to mention going from being AN FTO to being IN FTO).
Again, thanks for the extra material and also to Chris Wagoner to answering several of my questions before I even applied for equivalency last March.

I passed. I definitely credit those practice exams that were posted in the Yahoo group. The test was not particularly difficult (yeah, easy to say now, I know), but all that material definitely made it easier.
