Oral Board Question within a Question

I had an oral board today and a captain asked me a question, no sooner as I began to give my answer another officer asked me another question totally irrelevant to what the captain asked me. Is this usual? Without hesitating my response was to respond to the officer who interrupted me seeing his question was a yes or no, then I redirected back to the captain
