I lived in Jacksonville for 4 years, and moved down to Gainesville for my wife's schooling....I'm in patrol with Gainesville city, but we might be moving back to Jax. Just looking for some general info about the sheriff's office.

How about: How often/much do they hire?
If you pass all steps are you selected?
I read they have trouble getting enough qualified applicants. Is this true?
What is your schedule?
How is salary v cost of living?
Availability of OT and part time
Do you have set court schedule?
Take home rules
Opportunity and time needed for specialized units/promotions

I applied as an out of state officer who is FL certified and havent heard back. Do they typically take awhile to process?

Check out this web page: http://www.coj.net/Departments/Sheriffs+Office/Personnel+and+Professional+Standards/Personnel/default.htm

I work for St. Johns County S.O., I do know that they let the officers live in our county and can take their patrol cars home. Our guys seem to leave and go there. Not that I am really endorsing my agency but our website is: www.sjso.org
