[B]Our department has recently issued a general order that while we are in uniform, we are required to wear our vests. My question is: Which tee shirts, under armor or other is the best to help keep you COOLER? All help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

If you're in the south, it probably gets pretty hot and humid. You won't see a lot of difference between one thing or the next. It will really fall on personal preference. I work in San Diego and during the summer, no matter what I do, my undershirt is completely soaked through. It doesn't matter if my day is easy or my day is hard. Some guys at least like wearing the under armour stuff since it isn't going to sit wet on your chest all day. My dept issues out PACA visits with a fancy liner and pad which are supposed to help with heat. I still sweat as much so I don't know if it necessarily works.

Try a few things and you will get use to one or the other.

good luck,
Scrubb

Go to walmart and get the cheap under armour knock-off tshirts (Athletic Works)... work well to keep you "drying" off.... though your unfiform shirt still suffers from the moisture if really hot. It does work to keep you relatively cooler. It's equivalent to the Under Armour at about 1/3 the price.

I also found that wearing the cheap t-shirts does the job as well as the high dollar ones.

Another vote for the generic polyprop (UnderArmor) t-shirts.

Under armour is great they avg around 24.99 a shirt at sporting good stores the lycra they are made of keeps the sweat in, sometimes at the police supply stores you can catch them a little cheaper i caught mine for 15.99 and bought 5 of them then, i havent tried the knockoff brands that starter reebok and nike make but some of the other guys i know use them and they dont complain.

Actually, Nike bought out the Starter Company. So, if you go to Wally-World and buy Starter stuff.....you are actually buying Nike products.....just under a different name.

I have some co-workers that use the Starter stuff and it appears to be as good as my Heat Gear stuff....

The word's been out for awhile on the Starter stuff at WallyWorld....you can't hardly find it around here (in black, that is). Quick as they get some in, it's gone in everything but smalls and xxl's.

I would suspect you could buy it at walmart.com

I agree with the other officers. I used under armor and got the same use out of them as I do cheaper shirts. Dicks sptg goods has the same type poly prop shirts two for 25 bucks. They lasted me two years now. When I originally got them they were super expensive. Galls has the actual ones that are recommended but look a little strange. They are ribbed etc. So you get a little bit of air circulation. If you dont have a Dicks sptg goods around try to order from them online. I never have but let me know if you do and it works out. Also try www.sallyscopshop.com thats the store near the fed law enfor trng cnter. In Georgia? Well, you can go online and they have great deals, sometimes, for instance we wear 511 gear which can get really expensive? And she makes the identical (or has I should say, I dont think they run a sweatshop, but I could be wrong), items. They are just called different names. Like go online with the site. And search tactical pants, and you will see the same item only with a name like tactical 29's etc. Check out everywhere thats all you can do. Caveat Emptor. Or however you spell that saying. Good luck. STAY SAFE.

As a Female LE in Florida I wore the El Cheapo Shirts in the mens section at Wally World and found that it worked really well. Although I never bought the Under Armour as it was a bit too much for my wallet being a rookie I felt much better still sweated like hell in the Fl humidity but kelpt alot more cooler then I did with just the regular Tshirt undershirt

I was always a big fan of the store brand t-shirts at J.C. Penney. At the time, that was the only brand I could find that had a long size (as in "large long," "extra large long," etc.) and were of sturdy construction. The cheaper t-shirts would shrink in length, and after a few washings couldn't be tucked in anymore. The long version preserved their length longer.

Having the neck of a white t-shirt showing above the "V" of the short sleeve uniform shirt was a requirement in our department. I wore a V-neck t-shirt under my vest, and a crew neck shirt over it. This provided the required t-shirt crew neck, and also created a little air space under the shirt for cooling.

War story alert: we had one female officer who liked to wear her uniform shirts with (at least) the top two buttons undone. Obviously, she didn't wear body armor. She really didn't like the t-shirt requirement, and complained on the grounds that she was being required to buy and wear men's clothing. One of the local news stations got hold of this, and produced a great teaser line for the evening programming: "Local policewomen don't want to wear underwear! Film at eleven."

I just got my vest and although I'd heard others complain about them I never really appreciated how uncomfortable they were. It feels like I'm wearing a big diaper on my chest. Also, thanks for the info on the Wal Mart shirts.
