I won't say they were ugly but I remember watching an episode of Cops when they were some where in Florida and the all the cops had White shirts, and thinking that it was the dumbest idea ever for a uniform choice for patrol officers. A cop in the white shirt wrestles just one person to the ground and now that cop looks absolutly unprofessional and sloppy.

I don't like brown. I think the best looking uniforms are the dark blue ones our local cops wear. Looks good on em.

The shirts that our dept. buys us turn purple in a few months. Reckon that depends upon the quality. BDU's are the best

To my recollection, Columbus, OH has white shirts. Not necessarily ugly, but not too practical and there are better looking uniforms. The New Jersey State Police have nice french blue uniforms. Very sharp. I believe General Schwarzkopf or his father designed them. I also understand the uniform design has received awards for best looking.

The color scheme on our uniforms is fine. But I absolutley can not stand Polyester. It also doesn't hold up well at all in thisck underbrush and palmetto scrubs.

Our K-9 guys wear the cotton BDUs, "Because they are frequently in thick underbrush on tracks." However policy (and common sense) also dictates that they have a backup man while on a track, but all of us backup men still have to wear polyester. Figure that one out.

Sacramento County, CA deputies used to wear brown on brown. Yuck! They're black on black now, they may be hot as hell, but at least they look good. I also hate the white shirts I've seen in Florida and some Cleveland, OH suburbs, their officers look like security guards or paramedics.

But by far the worst has to be the green on green I've seen of some FL deputies. Ugh, not only do they look like sanitation workers with a gun, their 5-point badges look like they came out of a cereal box.

I believe it was a NJ state trooper I saw escorting Phil Mikelson around the PGA Championship. I remember being very impressed.

I'm also very fond of the Alameda County CA Sheriff's uniforms; grey top and dark navy trousers. Nice change of pace from the LA County clones all the other sheriff's deputies seem to be wearing

We are Navy on Navy, looks pretty good. Years before I started with the city they were Tan and Brown, ewww.

Still the best uniform out there is the Ohio State Highway Patrol, they have a look that definitely commands your attention. Its like the SS is stopping you for speeding. Sheriffs Office is a close second, as long as they fit in the with BSSA.

It's not the looks that would bother me so much, heck, have you ever seen the Navy working uniform, but the fact that they would be near impossible to keep clean and the the tactical issues it presents.

My agency wears tan pants with a brown stripe, a brown shirt with tan epulets and tan pocket flaps, and Lt. or above have their choice of either the brown shirt or a white shirt. Personally, I wear the brown shirt more often than not. When I see our officers next to the city guys that wear the blue shirts and blue BDU pants, we look much more professional. By the way, my mechanic wears almost the same blue uniform when he changes my oil! Now, if he'd just strap that greasegun on his belt..................!

Some NY Sheriff's Office's wear mailman pants and black shirts which is wierd.

The NJSP troopers and the NYC, Nassau and Suffolk PD Highway Patrol unit officers like the Italian Fascist Blackshirts or the Nazi Germany era police to some people lol (just look at the collar tabs and the WW1 era pants).

Just because the uniform is wierd dosent mean its stupid or silly its just means they look unique. I actually like uniqueness better then all LEO's wearing dark blue BDUs. Sometimes when im bored ill look at the different agency websites and check out their uniforms.

Your thinking of Broward County Sheriff's Office. In Nys most court deputies and state court officers wear white shirts...and of course if you rank Lt. or above you have to wear one too, however some agencies are getting rid of this idea to better peer relationships.

striped pants can look good but most of the depts in this part of ny wear navy blue shirts and pants only.

at one time the state wanted all the county sheriffs to wear grays like the state police but that idea faded quick.

blue shirts and gray pants has to be one of the different combos -in my opinion it does not look good but I am sure there are worse.

I dont see anything impressive about the SCPD uniforms at all, they are the same as the NYPD for the most part. SCPD also has the same exact ranks and rank insignia system.

I LOVE Rhode Island State Police's uniforms, those are absolutely beautiful looking. Unfortunately, they are not all that practical.

I HATE polyester and I also HATE not being allowed to wear cargo pants. Having said that, I actually like the tan pants with brown stripe and brown shirt that my department wears. Its distinctive, traditional, and has character. I only wish we could get some decent cargo pants to wear with them and maybe something with a blend rather than straight polyester. I'd really like to wear a turtle neck and commando sweater with my uniform rather than having to wear a uniform shirt between the two.

As far as ugly, yup Cincinatti is way up top. I also think that Minnesota State Patrol with their tan and purple is absolutely nasty. They also won "best dressed" in the last 5 or 6 years, just goes to show that taste doesn't play a factor in the judging.

SPM

LAPD Blue is the best.

Tan & Green (or tan/tan) is good for Deputies, but all BLACK is nicer looking.

As far as hats go, I vote for none. They are not practical. I get a hoot out of the D.I. hats, but I would NEVER wear one.

I take that back. I was thinking, if I was ever a traffic officer, I might keep one in my car for special occasions... like, a joke.

Chicago PD has the absolutly worst hats. Followed by the state troopers that are forced to wear those DI hats.

And, last but far from least, is badges. I really don't mind what kind of badge it is.. most look good to me. BUT, I think PDs should stick to either the eagle shield or the round shield. NYPD should keep thier style shield, as it's an NYPD thing. But like, in CA, a PD shouldn't really have a star shield. It's not the end of the world if they do, but I see star, I think : deputy. or... CHP...

Now, my vote for the ALL TIME WORST BADGE

is Oakland PD. They have a star. That's fine. But it says "Oakland Police Department" on it.

and that is IT. wait
ill get a pic

because I dont think you understand how plain this is...

http://www.policeguide.com/Photo_Galleries/Badge_Gallery_/Oakland_Police_Badges_3/opd13.jpg

I don't think this is the newest one, as I was in Oakland about a month ago...

the badges I saw were silver, but just as plain... all it said was "Oakland Police Officer" or something close.

I could frigging make that badge in my garage.

I read about a study in American Police Beat about a year and a half ago where they polled the public about what style of uniform looks the most professional and commands the most respect. If I remember right, the researchers showed over 1,000 people pictures of different uniform combinations and had them choose which looked best.

The results of their study found that midnight blue uniforms (pants and shirt same color) with basketweave genuine leather duty gear and black tactical boots were the most favored and respected. Silver or white chevrons were preferred over gold ones. The study also confirmed what many of us in the business already know, that cotton uniforms, while more confortable, look unprofessional due to their ability to become wrinkled and lose their crease.

I've been trying to find the issue I saw this study in, but so far I haven't been able to locate it.

That's pretty much the style here in Northern California. Most big city PD's have silver stars like that and I think it goes back to the olden days of San Francisco PD. Oakland, SF, Richmond, Sacramento, San Jose, Milpitas, Hayward, and then some, all have badges like that. I love them, but I'm biased. I'm not a fan of the eagle sheild at all, and the round shield is really more of an L.A. area thing. I believe only Rocklin PD has that style in NorCal. Everything else up here is the gold star like CHP has.

I don't know... i just think that the plain-ness of them is... so toy-looking.

I live in San Diego. If someone badged me with that I would demand an ID card. I just think you could get the same thing in a toy store... here. again, ill get a picture.

On a Google image search with the criteria "toy badge", the first (of many) image is:

Even THAT has more detail.

Here is a Los Angeles Deputy Sheriff's Badge:
http://www.back-up-trading.com/LASD_xewodk_180.jpg

It's not super fancy, but still doesn't look like a toy to me.

As far as the checkered hats, it reminds me of a taxi. In a way, sure, they are taxi drivers. But like, for criminals.

I don't see how the CT State Police uniform was included on the Best Dressed list. Maybe the judges looked at it under a black light, in which case those electric blue stripes must have lit up like a Christmas tree. The NYC uniforms, although not the most original, are pretty sharp. The Rhode Island State Police?

I think the plainness is the point. They're simple and easy to read. When you're in an area where our language and culture is new to so many people, it gets the point across quickly.

And they do get more detailed. In Oakland's case, flourishes or oakleaves or whatever are added for Sgts and above. Some PD's have the same style but with the flourishes for all officers.

Well, I have to say I am more likely biased than not. I have grown up in So. Cal. I HAVE noticed that more PD's up in Nor.Cal. have the stars. Not so here in So.Cal, most all PDs have the oval or eagle. (I don't like the eagle much myself, but since SDPD has it...)

Some college PDs have stars down here (UCSD Police, for an example).

I honestly like stars more than any of the other types, but when I see a police officer with a star I always think something is a little off.

Was is funny about an officer wearing a hood? I dont understand your post? I work on a drug unit, and we wear hoods on all warrants served and raids.

Smaller departments may only have a few UC's and must protect their identity. As for the defenseless Junkie, that comment does not deserve a response.

Most Canadian Police Services have switched over to black or dark blue shirts and black or dark blue pants with a red infantry seam stripe.

My Force wears khaki grey shirts and dark blue pants with a yellow cavalry seam stripe. Our ceremonial parade uniform is just SLIGHTLY more elaborate than that, but is not worn very often.

The guy on the left looks out of proportion in his uniform, The guy beside him doesn't look too bad, other than his shirt looks makes it look like he's got no neck. The middle guy looks ok, but a darker color blue would look better. That lady just doesn't look right at all. Maybe her pants are hiked up too high and her shoes aren't polished enough. The guy on the end also is having proportioning issues. And would it kill them to smile?

SinePari: Heh. No, I think she's applauding the uniform she's stopped so much by (Campus Security at her Uni.) Unless those guys are the city agency.

The blue uniforms in Spee-Dee's pic didn't look that bad, honestly. I like for the police in the city I live in to look professional. It also helps them out when something bad happens, because if the pictures at the scene (You know there's going to be someone with a video tape, be it a survelience cam, or a guy with a camcorder) show the police looking likes sloppy bums, then credibility may go out the window. Public Perception.

I've always liked Tan uniforms, and the LAPD Blue for actual wear. Not being a bright target has its advantages. Then again, I like long sleeve uniform shirts and a uniform dickie than short sleeve, except in Florida heat. Then, I'm begging to wear a polo shirt. :)

If I can find it, Pinellas Schools Police had a bad uniform picture. The guy needed to go back to Harrisons and demand to be actually fitted for his uniform.

Um, you say that these are ugly uniforms, but then you criticize the appearance of the officers wearing them, not the uniforms themselves? These are basic police uniforms, I don't see what is so unusual about them.

They just don't fit right. I think with more formal uniforms they should be altered accordingly so that they fit properly. Looks like sloppy and more crisp.

OK, this thread is about uniform style and color. If an individual officer does not have his uniform tailored properly, that is his problem and it has nothing to do with his department's choice of uniforms.

The department I worked for allowed us to tailor our uniforms. By tailoring I mean hem pants and taper shirts. As long as you are wearing the issued uniform properly and it looks professional you could pretty do what you want with it.

Thats's what Harris County deps. wear

Which Harris County are you referring to? Harris County Texas? The SO here is in the process of replacing uniforms. The old uniform was an all navy shirt with gold trim around the epalets with tan pants that had a wide dark blue stripe down the seam with gold piping on both edges. The new uniform is the same shirt but the parts are now nave with a thin gold stripe.

Harris County has 9 different county agencies that patrol in uniform, the SO and 8 different Constable's offices. Each Constable's office has their own uniform configuation. My office wears a tan shirt with navy pocket flaps and navy epalets trimmed in red. Our pants are navy with a 1.5" tan stripe that is also trimmed in red. We wear a Texas ranger style badge. Our patch is very simple, it is a blue shild with a gold texas on it with a red 4 in the Texas. Out of the 8 Constable's offices, we have been told we look the most professional. On top of that the uniforms are a tropical blend cotton so they are pretty decent in the Texas summers compared to polyester.

The Pct 8 Constable's office wears a white shirt with brown wrangler jeans that have a gold stripe added to the seam. I personally don't like it but the deputies say it is rather comfortable.

Are all 8 offices run under the same admin.? What else besides serving papers do deputy constables do? Does the SO serve papers too? Why did they deside to change the uniform?

Each office has an elected Constable that is the head of the agency. Harris County is broken up into 8 precincts based on the Justice of the Peace precincts. I work for Precinct 4. We are the largest in geographical size and number of deputies. We do not just serve papers. We do civil and warrants but we also do patrol and have specialty units within the patrol division. We have accident investigators, parks units, bike patrol, K-9, crime scene, traffic enforcement units, victims

I don't like our uniforms. They are powder blue tops with dark blue bottoms with a powder blue stripe. They are comfortable but the powder blue usually turns black and discolored from my web gear around the waist and they get dirty pretty easy. I'm a fan of the LAPD style. Anyone else have that kind of problem?

You can't make fun of a Mountie if you're not willing to make fun of the Rhode Island State Police. :) I like dress uniforms that are steeped with tradition, and that are unique, even if they seem a little odd.

I think the RCMP uniform looks pretty cool. I saw the video about the Musical Ride, very interesting, it's like a marching band with horses.

Me too. Something about women policing in skirts that just doesn't add up to me. Perhaps if you're in an office all day at the station, but not if you're on the street. And what's with those hats?

I just realized now that the RCMP formal uniform looks more like a Ranger Joe than a police uniform. Oh well. It's still nice. It represents Canada quite well. More peace-keeping than policing.

For Non-NCOs they are plain blue pants. For NCOs, SNCOs and Officers they are blue with the Scarlet "Blood Stripe."

Yes, they are different than the jacket. The jacket is black with the red piping for Enlisted and just plain black for Officers.

Only options are for Generals to wear black trousers with the "Blood Stripe" and for Honor Guards, SNCOs and Officers to wear plain white trousers during the summer months.

So... me being 23, would make you having (24) service stars... at 5 years a piece... would place you in excess of 120 years old! Haha, just yankin' your chain!

Up here, the Municipal Police Services generally wear a red stripe on their pant seams, and we were told that is the colour for infantry, whereas we wear a yellow cavalry stripe since we are "mounted".

The main difference in pants between Constables & NCOs and Commissioned Officers in the RCMP is that the Officers have (or had) a different thread of yellow stripe. As far as working uniforms, our Officers wear white shirts and the rest of us wear khaki grey shirts. For formal wear it gets more complicated - Staff Sargeant Majors, Sargeant Majors and the Corps Sargeant Major are allowed to wear a dark royal blue tunic; Officers have dark royal blue cuffs and a full dark royal blue neck band on their scarlet tunics, their Mess Kit is military-officer pattern short jacket with white tuxedo shirt, they can wear their forage cap or brown felt "stetson", they can wear 2 different styles of Sam Browne sword belts, and they have 3 different styles of rank badge boards for their shirt or tunic epaulettes, dependent on the type of duty they are performing.

No, I'm not quite 120, but you are about the same age as my oldest child, and you were probably born about the same time my first star was being sewn on my tunic!

I won't say they were ugly but I remember watching an episode of Cops when they were some where in Florida and the all the cops had White shirts, and thinking that it was the dumbest idea ever for a uniform choice for patrol officers. Your thinking of Broward County Sheriff's Office. In Nys most court deputies and state court officers wear white shirts...and of course if you rank Lt. or above you have to wear one too, however some agencies are getting rid of this idea to better peer relationships.

All of the Sheriff Offices in Florida have the same uniforms. The only difference is which one they wear and when. They vary from white top/green pants, green top/green pants, and green jumpsuit. I believe there might be more out there...

IIRC, either the State or the FSA decided to make all the SOs down here uniform. That's why most of the marked cars are also similar.

Palmetto Police Department of Palmetto, FL has a nice uniform I personally think. It looks very comfortable for our hot and sticky summers.

Some kind of tactical shoes/boots, looks like 5.11 tactical pants (dark blue), and a blue polo that says Palmetto PD on it. I'm assuming they wear body armor underneath the polo. IDK, I'm a big fan of polos here. Light and comfy. The question is: do they tear easy from days on the job? IDK. But it looks comfy as F and still looks professional. I HATE class B type uniforms in Florida.

What's the significance in the patches being upside down?

The patches are right side up, it's the chevrons that are upside down, kinda like the US Airforce and the US Cavalry from the late 1800s. Maybe they're just trying to be different or maybe keeping with old school tradition.

No disrespect intended, by I think these are some of the ugliest uniforms I've ever seen. The brown leather looks like it's from the late 1800s, early 1900s. The blousing on the pants makes it look like they should be on horseback.

Also, where are their badges? Why do they have numbers on their chests instead of a badge? That's kind of weird.

Comparing the Carabinieri to police agencies isn't really fair, either. They are considered to be federal military police officers in Italy and generally only patrol/guard high-risk areas. They are also deployed around the world in accordance with the needs of the Italian Government.

They don't mess around, either... when I was over there in 2006 I saw them shoot a guy in the middle of the street for resisting in no time at all. The public is scared of them, and frankly, they should be.

The Carabinieri is the national gendarmerie of Italy, policing both the military and civilian populations. Gendarmeries are police services, as a result of their duties within the civilian population, gendarmeries are sometimes described as "para-military" rather than "military" forces. Gendarmerie come under the authority of a ministry of defense or a ministry of the interior, or even both at once (France and Italy).

Gendarmeries provide a more disciplined police force whose military capabilities make them more capable of dealing with armed groups and with all types of violence, specializing in riot control and counter-terrorism. The use of military organizations to police civilian populations is common to many cultures. Currently there are 48 countries using Gendarmeries, plus the European Gendarmeries Force; Formed by five members of the European Union: France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands, the purpose was the creation of a European intervention force which would have gendarmerie functions and be specialized in crisis management.

Sounds good to me....

Italy is a great country...Ihave family there and spent a decent amount of time there

Illegal immigration has became a huge issue over there. If you commit a crime and you're illegal... you get deported.

Crime is really low... mostly petty thefts in the tourist sections...

Yea, there is the organized crime element, but I doubt you'll ever see any part of that...

For PDs I think the best is LAPD or navy blue looks the best.
For SOs I think the best is ALL OD green.

I think that Oakland PD has the cleanest uniforms Dark blue shirt/pants with the Light blue pin stripe on the pant. Also the one patch looks awesome. As for the guy that hates the badge because it is plain I love it because of that. It just looks so clean. I has "Oakland" on the top, badge number in the middle and "Police Officer" on the bottom.

I also like all black for SOs or PDs but it is warm in the summer time.

As for the worst, I agree with all dark brown, the white shirts are horrible. The one I hate the most is the dark blue pants with light blue shirts. YUCK! Reminds me of the academy.

I would and will wear the DI/Smokey hat on patrol just for giggles. I like how they look.

I am also a fan of jump suits and nylon gear. The more tactical you look the more intimidating you look. All of this is JMO

For Germany, the old Grenztruppen uniforms that were actually DDR were pretty sharp. Now...yeck!

And East Orange looks good (boots are actually bloused correctly!) but I'm anti-barret. Must be an army thing, but I hate barretts.

Best currently??

US - New Jersey State Police. Nothing - NOTHING - says official like high riding boots, breeches, and the crushed cap.

The checkerboard is to make them more distinguishable from non armed members, and here in Ireland, we tend to take our queues on uniform from the UK, and we tend to be about 5 years behind.

On the cars, they like us to be highly visible over here, hence the battenburg on the side of the car, which is also reflective so sticks out a mile at night.

I never realized that the checkerboard on the uniform meant that; I knew about the battenburg pattern, its just a bit different than the North American style of markings.

a lot of hating on the CPD hats, I think they look sharp as well. Their light blue with navy pants and usually black vests make them look like the quintessential police officer. the light blue is sort of welcoming and inviting, unlike the more "hard*****" black on black 'going to lay down the law' kinda vibe. However, CPD def lays down the law! Also, 5 and 6 pointed stars look the best. 7 is overkill and badges I have always viewed as an LAPD NYPD staple. a five pointed star with a circle around it looks really good, ive seen some Florida and Illinois depts with that. Shields just make me think private security.

I couldn't find an actual picture of the badge, but this is one example from an Illinois dept that has the star encircled. The badge looks the same except obvisouly its all silver with a color design in the middle and the dark navy blue areas around the star are open. Really cool I think.

:) I love CPD hats as well. Got a sgt & PO hats in my collection (still looking for a hat shield for the officer version).

The Mass State Police have the sharpest "dress" uniforms in my opinion. The best combo of light and dark blue and really nice looking black boots !!

I agree, the Mass State Police definitely have one of the, if not the, best looking police uniforms.

The US Marine Corps uniform is definitely the best looking military uniform.

There is NO dress uniform anywhere on this earth that is sexier, sharper and more masculine than the USMC dress blues. Nothing. And I don't giveadamn what that Marine might look like in civies...those dress blues are magical...they make every last one of them HOT HOT HOT. ;)

Do they all have that uniform, or are they motor officers?

Sorry, I always loved the NYPD Hwy Patrol uniforms. Not very practical & they DO look like Hitler's SS, but when they get out of their unmarked cars & walk up to you, you're not going to argue......

I will agree on the "sharper" part (to agree with the others, well would be "wrong" lol). I love my set.

Have you ever been to Florida, do you have any idea how freaking hot it gets in the summer?

Smurf, I have to say that as a former Marine, I agree that out dress blues are by far THE BEST looking dress uniform out there. However, PERSONALLY, I felt more like a bad *** when I was wearing my Service Alpha's (the green uniform, khaki shirt, green blouse). To me, that was the "I mean business" look. :D

Theres a sheriffs office in the adjacent parish to mine that wears hunter green with gold piping and a gold stripes on the pants near mine. Which in and of itself isnt to bad. But add the huge full color american flag above the right pocket, the badge that looks like the star of david, and the generic patch that says sheriffs office, its pretty heinous. My pd weres midnight navy with a shield 9 months out of the year, and in the summer wears silver/tan 5.11 polos and black tactical style pants. With a sewn on badge and police patch on the back. Its funny though, in the summer we rolled this crackhead up and he thought we were swat, or some kind of special unit.

Birmingham, Alabama is also one I don't care for. A mismatched top and bottom with yellow strips and insignias makes for a bad uniform.

If the pants were also a dark color like the uniform shirt was, it wouldn't look that bad.

They are dark blue. I designed them with the help of a friend of mine on the honor guard. I wanted to keep them looking simple but sharp. Too many pins and such make it look cluttered in my opinion.

Philly PD, IMO. Great department, but their uniforms look about 20 years out of date.

It has been previously mentioned referring to the all black look, but the MASP uni's were actually designed after Hitler's SS. That being said, the uni's are VERY sharp.

Hee hee hee... I lived in Carbondale for years. Very, very small, laid-back police department. From what I remember, those uh, "uniforms" are just for Mountain Fair weekend, which is the biggest event of the entire year (seriously). It's a Friday night through Sunday festival, usually in late July...lots of rednecks, hippies, and drinking.

Dont care. I would refuse to wear them. Period.

Oh, Patrol Officers need to be clean shaven. No beards. We seem to be intent on getting away from the para military roots of policing. Bad move.

Very nice honorguard uniforms. The only thing I woud alter is to remove the name tags and any flair on the uniform. Cords, etc. Slick just looks better to me.

The Officer second to the left wear a different grey uniform shirt with a rectangular patch under the standard Washington State Patrol patch...Is he a State Trooper or a Motor Carrier Officer attached to the state patrol ?

He's a Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer. It's not a fully commissioned spot (like a Trooper), but a Special Deputy Commission, which gives him limited authority to enforce commercial vehicle laws while on duty.

I've seen as many as 2 pairs in front and 2 sets of 2 pairs in the back. Then again, I'm in North Philly, so things can get fairly hectic around here.

Normally I don't notice how many they carry, but that guy stuck out to me because it looked like he was carrying a lot of extra cuffs.

He's not wearing two cuffs in the front, the picture is blurred. Look at the officer's watch and hand and you'll see, he was either moving when the pic was taken or the camera had a glitch.

Somebody already posted a pic of the New Mexico State Police duty uniform, but here's one of their honor guard- in my opinion it's one of the sharpest uniforms in the US. LAPD has a great everyday uniform, too. To me, it's hard to beat that LAPD navy blue uniform, no patches, classic oval badge, and a shooting medal on the left pocket-look.
