I am taking the Amtrak Police test soon. Can anyone give me any info about salary, benefits, time, and previous LE experience? I know starting is around $31K/year before OT, but I don't know the steps after that? How long to top pay, and how much is that? Is there OT available? Basically i'm looking for the "real, take home" salary of a first and second year Amtrak Cop because at $31K I'll be taking a big pay cut from my current agency.

Given the recent events in London I am sure congress is scrambling to allocate more money to the National Pasgr Railroad Corporation, and given the rising costs of gas I think a railroad job is pretty secure. Anyone have any insight on this?

As for the training... I know as an Amtrak Cop you are sworn under state and federal law. How does this affect me if say I wanted to transfer within the Amtrak system to another location in another state? I have heard the retirement is 30 years or 65... is this true?

Trying to get the most info possible so my next move is my last.

Thanx.

I am a former railroader, since your working for amtrak
your retirement money is sent thru to the railroad retirement board
and you will not have s.s taken out, butthe percentage taken out
for r.r. retirement will be a few points more, thus a better pension.
For railroad police, i do not think they get a special break for
retirement purposes and they retire at age 60 like a clerk or
a switchman do unless they changed in the last few years.
make a informed decision....you got 25 to 30 more yrs to work..!

Thanx, ftlaudcop.

Judging from your "former" status you left RR policing prior to retirement. Does this have to do with the retirement being so high? Are there other negatives to a RR police job?

How about the positives of a RR police gig vs a local or state agency?

Stay safe, take care.

I think taking a job with Amtrak right now may be a little risky. Amtrak is totally funded by the government and the Bush Admin. is seriously looking at cutting funds to it. I personally think cutting funds to Amtrak is a big mistake, but there are several measures in congress and the house to do it.

If you took this job and two years later the government decides to end their funding of it, there goes your job!

I started on the railroad almost right outta high school and most of the jobs
were paying $10.00 ( 1979), I was to young in Illinois for any law enforcement, plus being a white male, at the time several chgo cop's told
me i'd have gray hair before they would hire me no matter the education
or being sqeaky clean, they were on a women and minority hiring spree
back then, i got laid off - furloughed, still onthe senority list, i came to fla
and thru the fire academy, played joe fireman for 1 year at $4.50 a hour
after a ball buster academy, really got tired of medical call's and 90 yr old retired people, then sept 83 i started with the brevard county sheriff, by the kennedy space center for $5.37 a hour, along with a cadet, who
is now the elected " SHERIFF"....talk about a great hook..!! 22 yrs later
i work for nationally known agency in spring break town, and the money
got way better since the $12,500 a year i started at...i usually hit 80,000
a yr depending on how much i wanna scam on overtime, court time and off duty details, I plan on moving back tobrevard in 2008 or 2009 to take care
of my parents who will be in their mid 70's, and use my hook to get a appointed capt of operations position there.
my step dad retired as Lt of police for " chessie system, now csx outta the chgo division, he did 30 yrs with them and 9 with baltimore, plus he had a little army time, he had his fun chasin crooks all over the city, plus indiana.
he was my wild card in my r.r. yr's in case i ran across some knuckle heads who were smokin dope or drinking malt liquor on the job , that was runnin rampant back then, my boss's were all cool guys, from the steam engine days, and my family did business with them for 40 yrs or so sell them diesel fuel, gasoline, etc....but the best thing they did was lay me off
andi got my ***** in gear ging to school....I loved workin on the railroad, but that lay off stuff was a bit to much, I was hired as they were phasing out jobs and 1898 technology and modernizing, same way when i got hired with the sheriff's office.....it was mayberry technology...with logging arrests
in the old blotter, the cjis computer was their, but it was down more than it was up. old way of dispatching thru ibm cards, i seen them switch to
c.a.d. in 1984. serving road kill to inmates ( deer ) ran over at the kennedy space center, and me pickin it up and hauling it to the jail...lol..!
it's all been fun..., you run across the same crimes except for traffic and doing accidents, minus domestic violence...!!....all fun...

I went to the test and left before I even got a chance to take it. They told me top pay (w/ night diff) is $40,000 after 5 years and retirement after 30 yrs. service or at age 60. The only real problem I have with my current agency is the retirement, but it is still better than 30/60.
I could not afford to live in NYC on that kind of pay... especially because it would be such a drastic cut from what I make now. My current base rate is higher than that and I haven't even hit top pay yet.
The RR police jobs seem to be more for someone who put in 20-25 years with one agency and has a pension from that agency. They can then "double dip" with a second railroad pension... something for me to think about in 20 years?
The one thing I did find impressive about Amtrak was their commitment to training. The officer who spoke said that not only do they go trough a state police academy, but they also go to FLETC. He also said they are constantly doing in-service training.
Ftlaudcop... the railroad seniority thing also kind of got me. You mentioned being laid off (furloughed). It seems that is a good possibility depending on the funding and availability of jobs in whatever division you are assigned. They also said that if you transfer to another location you have 5 years where you have no seniority at the new location and can be sent back to where you came from at any time during those 5 years. They have a 401(k) that they don't contribute to and you don't get dental until you are finished with your year probabtion.
Thanx for the help. It sounds like you had fun doing the RR thing, and I truly believe that Amtrak has a dedicated and professional department of cops who are good at what they do, but I think it's something for me took look at during my second incarnation of a police career rather than my first.

Thanx again and be safe down there.

Things will get better soon at APD. Go ahead with the process and when you are offered the job, then decide if you want it. Good Luck

Depends. I applied for a couple on the East Coast and it took about 2 weeks for the one from Baltimore to come back. Took over 6 months for the ones for DC and Philly to come back.....

I declined all three because at 31K, there was no way I could move to the East Coast and live......

What is the pay and benefits like at CO-OP City Security? I drove by in the RMP and spoke to some of your staff. Some were sharp and others couldn't speak english. I saw in the newspaper complex is going to get rid of your guys. In any event, good luck.

Thank you for your reply APD261. I just wanted more insight on the job/career as a whole. I took the test in august 2007 for the penn station location in NYC. Are they state police officers or federal police officers? I keep hearing that Amtrack is a private orgainization.

Amtrak PD goes to FLETC which is a federal academy...but amtrak is a private company. There are federal laws that can be enforced but more state laws are enforced. Actually most laws that are enforced are state. You are not a federal officer as you are when you work for USSS UD or NSA, but you still go to FLETC so you can call yourself what you want. Penn Station is very busy, being that there is about or suppose to be about 100 P/O's for Amtrak in Penn Station. Money is real good for new people, but all the good work rules were eliminated. It all depends on what you want to do in a cop job. You will deal with a lot of homeless and DK's, also you will deal with a lot of thefts, fare evasions. If you were going to work for Amtrak, Penn Station would be the place to work.

But most want to be able to understand what you are saying (by writing properly like you seem to be doing now....and not in all Caps)......so if that bothers you, then that's on you....and you maybe waiting a while for your info.....

The person you were talking to, along with APD and serveral others are Amtrak LEOs.....

Amtrak is a private company whose stock is owned by the US Government and whose board of directors are appointed by the president/congress/secretary of the DoT.

Last I heard we are under a hiring freeze.

PSNY is a good place. Besides it wont be long until the MTA cops out number the APD folks there.

Thanks for the info ORLANDOFED5-0. Well hopefully they are not on a hiring freeze in the NYC metro area. They said that i passed the written test and maybe in a year they will start calling. I think i also heard about a new contract, is that agency wide or just for local jurisdictions?

I've heard that APD has given out tests only to call the individual up for futher processing about 1 year later, and then after processing is done to wait about 6 months before the academy would start. So it looks like you could have a very long wait.

Waiting is ok with me. I took Amtrackpd and TBTA tests. I am willing to wait because i already work for a great agency. But it is always good to keep your options open while you are young, just in case you decide to do something different!!

thats great. The best thing to do is just get on lists, take the first that calls and leave your options open. If you do get called for further processing but do not wish to continue, keep deferring to later dates rather than quit. If later on you feel like switching you can.

Anyways good luck on everything.

listen an internet beef is just stupid. There may be some on this thread who want information about APD and this little war is taking the thread over and preventing some from getting the information. As both a correction officer and federal law enforcement officer you both look very unprofessional right now carrying on about who's dick is bigger. You may want to get your point across at making someone ask a question using proper english but use the PM function instead of on the thread deviating the topic. And comparing a FLEO's job to a CO's job is apples to oranges, completely different and both needed equally.

Squash the feud, man up and apologize to each other and move forward with the topic. If I came off as a bit harh I apologize, and mean nothing personally.

To GBOTJ

I welcome your voice of reason and true statements. When i needed info you were always there to help like a real true forum warrior. If you read back you will see that I have been positive about the situation and being trying to stay on topic with the APO info and have dropped the nonsense conversation with this J**K several times, but this whatever he calls himself has too much time on his hands so much as to harass me about nonsense when I am trying to gather much needed info and help others that may have taken the test in NYC with me. Maybe your wisdom will end it. But seeing his juvenile ways i doubt it,,,,Good luck

real true forum warrior.

That like a X-Box or Paint Ball warrior.....?

when I am trying to gather much needed info and help others that may have taken the test in NYC with me.

Perhaps if you wanted correct info....you would get off your lazy rear (like I did) and go to the nearest Amtrak Stations and talk to the Coppers there....instead of relaying on info off the internet....?

You're like one of those little pesky lap dogs....that nips at folks heels when they come into a house....

You try to be all noble......and your not....your one of the "Gimmie" folks....that want others to go out and get info for you...because your too lazy to actually go get it yourself......then when you get called on stuff you whine and cry and try to turn it around to the folks that you are arguing with....

Perhaps if you go back and look at my threads....you will see that I help a lot of folks here...more so that you have ever thought of in your brief time here..... But I guess that would be too much work for you....

Give it a rest son.....

SO SO SO SO SO So Sad, I told you he wouldnt stop. Some people just hate their life so in turn they hate themselves, and furthermore spread their hate and negativity onto others. This guy is a broken record and a lost cause. Does anybody else that is actual APD officer have any useful info about the job? Is it a great rewarding career?

Perhaps if you got off your lazy azz and searched the site you would see that there have been numerous threads about this in the past that contain good info......

Took me a whooping 3-4 mins to find the info and post it.....and it contains folks that are on here that haven't posted in your thread but work for Amtrak.....and links to other sites on what other LEOs think about Amtrak.....

That's why you see I've been a member here a couple of years and have very few posts. Somebody always ends up making it an argument. I got news for everyone, you can't win! We're all thousands of miles apart. I'm used to this because I'm a martial artist and if you think there's bickering on this board, you gotta see how the martial arts community hates each other. So I've learned not to fight on the internet. You can't win and thats not why anyone is here.

I have a life ,,,unlike you,,,,and everybody has already seen you foolishness for claiming to be an 40 year old virgin. So i dont not have all day to surf the web, especially when this is a forum where you can ask dircet questions and get direct answers. So go take your lil blue pill and enjoy a night with your computer and you hand and your trusty lotion

I have a life ,,,unlike you

Watching grown men shower for a living is quite a life....though, I am sure you enjoy it......

As for the rest....as I stated....you're a lazy person and want folks to do you research for you. It took me a whooping 4-5 mins to search for all those threads.

Further, if you were really interested in the job.....you should probably get off your azz and go to NYC and talk to folks instead of relying on info here....as you don't know if the folks responding to you are even Amtrak LEOs....

Last think I would want is to get some faulty info......and then pass up a job that might be a lot better than watching grown men play hide the sausague all day.....

When I was looking at the job a few years ago, I got off my *** and went to Union Station in DC.....showed my creds to a couple of on-duty guys...and chatted with them for about 20 mins..... You done that yet...?

Doubtful....because if you had done that, you wouldn't be asking stupid questions like this.....

Have fun kicking cages....as with your attitude you'd never make it on the road......

To answer your question NYSJAILER2008, Close-Combat Karate and Ki Chuan Do. If you go to attackproof.com,you can get lost in all the info there. By the way,I don't know if you know this or not, but we're in the same union (not that being in NYSCOPBA is anything to publicize).

Hey SSOMIKE,

Great info, I will look into those styles. Yeah what a Union it is,,,,LOL. Yeah I know OMH are brothers in arms with state corrections, but when it comes down to it we all have to stick together to hopefully get more money and/or beniifits. One of your fellow Officers just jumped ship and joined out ranks, you might have known him or trained him.

I know of at least one other guy who's on his way over to you guys. as far as NYSCOPBA, at least I finally got my retro so right now I'm pretty happy. Get me a brand new ,current contract and I won't know what to do with myself. As far as the website, it's nothing compared to in person. I actually helped train a C.O. from Oregon. We get people from all over the world just to be able to train for a day. If you can ever make it to a class, you'd be doing yourself a real service.

I am definately trying to attend a class to get my feet wet in the Arts. Send me a (PM) with the location and hours of operation.

If you go back to the website, go to the class locations section and it'll give you all the locations and hours (and prices too, I believe).

I dunno wht is going on with Amtrak right now. I applied to them bout 10-11 years ago, and made it to the final process, and got denied. I went down to see my investigator @ Penn Station and he pulled me in his office for a "chat" He told me I was a great candidate and that my package and blud book looked fine, he said I should not to get discouraged and that the only reason they weren't hiring me was financial. They didnt want to pay for me to go to FLETC, they had a lot of DOD guys in the applicant pool who had been RIF'd. And they could hire them right up. I thanked him for his honesty. About a year later I got on with USPP. When one door closes, another door opens.

Was at Penn Station today and not too impressed with what I saw from the APD. The armed National Guard Soldier looked high speed though.

They are there because of the MTA. Amtrak does not want them there and they have NO LAW ENFORCEMENT AUTHORITY.
