Anyone from there? How's the work and schedule? I called the other day about a lateral transfer but I'm certified in VA and they only accept MD certs. Worse case scenario I would go through another academy but definetly not looking foward to that. I just want to get outta the Fairfax area, these home prices are OUTRAGEOUS and the pay is just not comparable.

Patrol has a permanent midnight shift (2200-0600 or 2300-0700). If you are not on midnight shift then you will work days (0600-1400 or 0700-1500) for 2 weeks and evening (1400-2200 or 1500-2300) for two weeks and rotate that way. They stagger 1/2 shift early and 1/2 shift late so there is always coverage. Only work 8 hours, you dont have to be in early for roll call. Roll call starts your 8 hour tour. Days off vary by shift and which precinct. 1 rotation is 1 month days off are tue/wed, 1 month sun/mon, 1 month fri/sat and then starts over. Some shifts work 5 on 2 off, 4 on 2 off, repeat.

Have a buddy of mine, that has been there for a good amount of time now. I know he loves it. It is a good department and weel sought after. I think they do two academies a year, one in Jan. and one in July. It does have a good reputation as a respected department. Good opportunities and specialty units. If you could do another academy, I would suggest giving them a shot.

they will take you if you deliver a great oral interview also, you need a recomedation from a Ofc with Rank. They take transfers from anywhere you just gotta know who to talk too. they wont post it and they wont tell you over the phone its sum sacred crap..

My department works closely with Baltimore City and Baltimore County. By far, the county officers seem far happier. Met very few that were disgruntled.

I was working O's game a few weeks ago ( vs NYY) and drunken NYPD Sgt badges me and asks me how I like working for Norris. (Norris was his former LT) I took great pleasure in advising him Norris never worked at my agency and told him to pick up a City Paper to read the Ed Norris interview. Saw him again after the game and he was shocked. Guess nobody in NYC had heard.
Yeah BPD and County are worlds apart. I have great respect for both agencies but they are different in how and what they police. One reason I like where I work is I get a good mix of both.

As far as getting hired by Baltimore County, you don't need to know anyone with rank. I am sure it wouldn't hurt but it is not a must. The only interview you will have is one on one with your background investigator. It is not a standard oral panel like most deprtments have. It is mostly to clear up loose ends on your background. The academy classes are usually in December and June. It takes a little time to get specialty assignments with Baltimore County. At the precinct level it depends on the precinct. Some precincts have mostly new officers where as some have a lot of senior officers. Some units seam that they have a fair selection but there are some where you have to know the right people. I am sure that is standard with most departments though.
