It totally depends on what city/town. Some auxiliaries are little more than glorified crossing guards that do nothing but church traffic on Sundays, others are armed, have power of arrest, go out on patrol, etc.

Well im only 20 and at least to my knowledge you need to be 21 to get a gun permit. Is that law only for civilians? In other words does the department have the ability to overrule that law and allow me to carry at 20?

They used to. Until recently, the minimum age in MA to be a police officer was 19, but Governor Romney recently signed a law that upped it to 21.

Some auxiliary departments have both armed & unarmed positions, again it depends on what city/town you're dealing with.
