what did the BI say to your employer?????
SD5326
04-05-2006, 09:19 PM
Nothing really in depth, but, I'm not going to put details out on a public forum for obvious reasons. If you've done some research (i.e. this website) or have knowledge on what type of questions BI's ask when they call your employer it would be easy to guess (please don't take offense to that, but there's already enough open source info on the types of questions BI's ask). It was nothing off the wall from what my boss told me. All I'll say is that they verified employment along with some other reliability type questions.

Avue added some instructions to my application today. Evidently, I have completed the first phase of the hiring process and have been instructed to "make appointments and receive several medical screenings." I also have been instructed to download and print several forms related to my health.
Do I wait for FAMS to call or do I just make an appointment to get a full physical and just take all of the paperwork with me? I am going to call Avue tomorrow for clarification but just wanted to get some additional feedback.
Thanks!

You have to wait for an email from the FAMS. Once you get that message, it will give you a number to call to set up the appointments. Good Luck.

Once I have met with my regular doctor and he has filled in the F3280 forms, do I fax them back into Avue?
manstown
04-07-2006, 11:13 AM
I didn't bring anything with me. I never met with my doctor. And when I met their doctors, they took care of sending the med results. Not to say that you don't have to. But I have since gotten a call for an interview, next week, and nothing was said about my medical so I assume that I am cleared. If not they will tell me if anything is wrong. But when I left the medical, the nurse told me that all looked fine.

I met with my regular doctor this morning. He performed an EKG and filled out the F3280A and F3280B for me. However, I didn't give him the Medical Authorization Form. None of the items I answered yes to on the SF93 were treated by him. For example, I broke my arm in 1994 but was treated by an ER doctor at a hospital and not my current regular doctor. So now I am wondering if I need to drive to the hospital that treated my broken arm and give them a copy of the Medical Authozation Form and have them forward copies of my records to FAMS?
I may need to call Avue about this one....In the mean time I wait for a email/call about my FOH physical examination.
Patrio72
04-07-2006, 01:24 PM
OK, I need to go back to my regular doc and have him compose a letter stating that my once broken arm is "ok". On a side note, why does Avue always ask for your name when you call? Not a big deal; I was just curious...

Thanks folks that is what I hear and also what I do not hear.-(July school date) Just wondering if there are any FAM applicants out there who have already completed one PTA-not given class date...and who are awaiting the call for a second go-round with the PTA. Understanding that the PTA is only valid for 90 days I get the feeling that I will be running them more than 1x, 2x, or 3x.

hey- I'm in the same boat. I finished everything back in September, then the pta came about, took that in mid February. Honestly, I don't think I'd drive another hour and a half to do it again after 90 days.
It would be nice, -no actually, it would be a little more professional of them to let those of us who have completed everything know something.
The last thing I had heard was a phone call asking to send another copy of my dd214- mine had been lost coming from AC. My app had made it to DC and was ready to go up to the hiring people, I was told. Since then, these forums have fed a bunch of rumors, but no official word on anything.

Just to let everybody know, they are still moving the process along. I completed my application and BI/Medical statement in late March. Today I got a call from the local office to set up my panel interview in early June.
I'm not sure if they've started the BI yet, I haven't heard anything from my supervisors or administration.
I'll keep everybody advised on the process, it's good to have a forum like this to share the experience with other candidates and read their experiences as well.

3/11?...That's nothing. I applied back in September 05, qualified for the highest pay band, got the conditional offer, sent in my medical release, and haven't heard a thing. I've called Avue several times to make sure I didn't need to send anything else in. They said my app looks good and that I should just keep waiting. I've given up on hearing from them. God I hate it when people determine what LEO jobs are and are not 'police', 'cops' or 'law enforcement'. Last time I checked, I have arrest authority, a badge, a gun, federal authority to enforce laws. Just because some agencies don't arrest someone everyday, or do patrol work, does not mean that they are not law enforcement. Special Agents at OIGs, FAMs, people who do protective work, and others that don't do 'traditional' LE work get the shaft all the time on these boards. Sorry for the rant, but its somewhat offensive.

Unless you had 6c coverage at a previous job then sorry to say, you are too old. Only in the sense that you have to be hired by your 37th birthday. there have been instances where a waiver was granted, but so many applicants in the pool, I don't know the likelyhood of that happening. First off, looks like I hurt the feelings of some of you guys ! Secondly, I WOULDN'T WASTE MY TIME applying for a "questionable" fed job- when I said you are not really cops,I was talking to those who might "think" the job has the same emphasis on enforcement as say, a police officer/state trooper /deputy sheriff. I also meant that you don't patrol, rarely arrest, and from my experience ,I've seen the TSA regulatory(non sworn, unarmed) agents and the FBI DO MOST of the work on the "aviation security" end of the enforcement.( I've handled sex assaults on acfts, robberies, batteries / assaults, kidnaps, thefts,"wanted persons", assisted with tranport of dangerous felons with the "FEEBEES",Secret Service and "THE" U.S. MARSHALS- no intervening or assistance from a FAM ! hhhmmmm???? - so if you're there for acft security ,fine, but don't try to puff your chests about anything else !Plus ,gotta admit it- I've heard MORE of your "guys" complaining about how the job sucks, particularly agents that have transferred to the agency from a PD,state agency or even from other FED Depts- issues about pay, assignments, the whole bang- and I work in Ca. so our salaries FAR exceed what they pay most of you- why would I BOTHER to LOSE$$$ on that aspect? when I said what I said , I meant it - I don't really KNOW what you do, but its not "typical policing"- if that insults you, so be it, if it doesn't then don't worry about what I said .there are plenty of alternatives as far as having a job in law enforcement, and being a FAM is one of them. I replied only when I read the misery stories of people applying and seemingly being overlooked or not even contacted. If your house is in order you don't need to defend it. FLAME back if you want.I've said what I said........

oh please...I'm not going to get into a debate over this, but the fams job is not an entry level le position. Someone with years of training and experience is what is needed up there- ex military SF, SWAT experience, etc.... I know I would not feel comfortable on a plane with a fam for protection that was looking in luggage 4 months earlier.
Before you get all upset with me over it, check out the delphi forums, where the current fams post, and they'll tell you the same thing. They laugh at the idea of screeners wanting to go to fams.

Kokopelli, I am genuinely sorry to hear the bad news, but at the same time it may be for the better.
Are you SWAT because you like the work, or because it sounds cool? I assume the former to be true, in which case, this is not that. It's really not as high speed as some people looking to do counter-terrorism type stuff tend to think, or as easy as some people who want a paycheck for sitting on their butts all day think.
Respectfully, what the service gets with highly experienced SWAT or SF guys is people who are more likely to leave in a year or two that want more pay.
As for the 20 somethings (including myself) and former TSA employees, I haven't met anyone yet in those categories that didn't have something to make them stand out.
Essentially, if anything bad does happen with a FAM involved, I don't believe it'll be because of who they're hiring.
I can definitely understand how the "more qualified applicants" thing can be a slap in the face, I don't know what they should put, if anything. once again, sorry to hear the bad news.
As for those still in the process, good luck.

Just got a e-mail from avue. It stated that after I re-cert my application I do not need to re-send forms. That would have been nice to know when I got the re-cert letter. I have my medical test Thursday. Anyone processing out of the Atlanta FO? I have taken my written psych but not the psych interview. They said we needed to have medical first. Should I go ahead and try and schedule the psych again? Were is everone else in the process?

I am curious what federal job did you leave after 10 years to become a federal air marshal?
As a Air Marshal, no sir, I have not arrested anyone by gunpoint. As a federal officer, with over 10 years of experience, yes I have, several. I've also been in four shoot outs and shot once. I've also made drug seizures in the thousands of pounds, arrested drunks, pedophiles, rapist, murderers, smugglers etc, etc. I don't know what makes you think that your typical air marshal has never done anything, but ride in a plane. You need to seriously check your facts officer, or, get some better snitches. The ones you have, have been steering you wrong.

How long after medical exam did you get the call for psch interview? I had my medical yesterday. This waiting game sucks!!!!!! Been in the process since 6/2005. Do you think it is because I chose all duty locations and not just DC/NY?

the FAMS HR person who gave me my offer told me that again they're going to hire as many as they can before the end of the fiscal year. so i'd bet you can expect the rash of hiring that happened in the fall of last year.
my timeline:
8-31-05: panel/written psych
9-14 medical
10-5 psychologist
2-13-06 PTA
2-17 offer
2-22 hiring freeze
5-12 request to recert psych
5-15 offer
drepol

While I'd agree that there was a major hiring push this past fall (when I got picked up), given the number of applicants (multiple tens of thousands) and the number picked up (MUCH LESS THAN THAT), I wouldn't call any hiring the FAMS has done, or will do in the near future a "rash of hiring"

Based on some recent information that I have received from current Air Marshals both online and in person, I am very seriously considering dropping from the process. I continually keep hearing very similar complaints about the current leadership in the FAMs and even more disturbing is the more recent development of common health issues among long-time FAMs. I am NOT trying to discourage anybody from applying, I just think I might want to put my application process off at least until we see some management changes.
My question is this...I'm still early in the application process, my oral board is in June. At what point in the process can I drop without seriously hurting my future chances of being hired? I'm pretty sure they wouldn't like it if I went all the way through the process and then said, "Thanks, but no thanks." Does anybody know if they blackmark you if you drop from consideration early in the process?
Thanks for any input,

Don't mean to rain on your parade. But I don't think if you drop out they will keep your file close by. Just follow through with the process and see what answers you can get in the mean time. If you still have the interview to go in june, it may be a while before you get picked up.

SD5326

I did some research for you on the diabetes issue. To answer your question, no, diabetes is not an automatic disqualifier, however, you do have to have an extensive screening done by your personal physician and I'm almost certain you'll have to have some additional screenings done by the Doctor FAMS has you go see when they authorize you to to the medical portion of the assessment. I hope this helps and just so you know, that's all I know about the subject.

If you get hired and worked for FAM for 3 years could you lateral to another federal agency like the U.S. Marshal Service or U.S. Customs or how long would you have to be on the FAM to transfer to a different duty location like Las Vegas?
I've lived in vegas for about 5yrs.(from NY) and presently I'm a checkpoint sup w/ TSA. They reserved X amnt of spots for us if we wanted to apply as TSO's we'd get preference. A few ppl I work with are going for it but with a wife and 2 kids, (that I kinda like),It's not for me.But TSA is an excepted service now for most federal agencies out there. From what I understand once your in a year, your good to go on the transfers.

FYI - My fingerprint cards were handed to me right after the Panel Interview and I was asked asked to mail (certified) them in after I got them done. I'm not sure that proximity to the field office has anything to do with it. I had my interview at the Charlotte office last week and I was told that there were people from as far away as Charleston, SC.

If he said interviews are on Tuesday and sent you directions to the F.O. I would consider that an invitation for an interview.
If you want to get the ball rolling with the FAMS process you should go............ short notice or not. Good luck!
An agent just called me now, it's set up. He said it could be a long day or a short day, depending on how well I do on the panel interview. Can anyone PM me with some tips for the panel interview, if allowed?

Hey guys I need a little help. I received an email from avue asking that I set up my medical. It lists and provides links to all of the required documentation except for the Physical Exercise Performance Requirements Form F3280B. I have called avue and haven't heard back. Any chance you guys know where I can find this?
update: I just got a response from FAMS. Evidently the process has changed and F3280B does not have to be completed by personal physicians. F3280A still needs to be completed by your MD.

I applied on 5/24 and just got my fingerprint cards in the mail on the 17th. Sent them back out via overnight mail and am very excited. I have no idea where the closest field office is. There isn't a list of locations with field offices anywhere is there? It just seems to me that a list of locations would be pretty counter-productive. Anyway, for anyone who knows a lot about field offices a pm or response would be great. Thanks!

It funny you should ask, alot of questions they asked me were about my wife supporting me, wilingness to move. etc. I can't say officially if me being married is why I got turned down. But hey 14 years in the military, infantry and MP, plus correction officers, and now Federal Police maybe it was my qualification.

Go back to Avue. I think there's a section where you select your field office preferences from a list. You may not have seen it b/c filling this out is optional on the electronic application.

BUT HEY!.....I'm married and interviewed on the West Coast and am going to D.C. I guess that rumor is null and void. Stop speculating and move on VACOP. I'm not getting into my qualifications. Good luck to everyone and don't give up because of what you may think may keep you from getting the call. Just keep doing the steps in the process that they make you do and everything will be o.k. Qualifications are not the end all of whether or not you'll get hired. If you recall, last fall they hired guys that have absolutely NO L.E. experience whatsoever. All;
Thanks for the 37 pages of info. I read for at least two hours. I applied back in Feb and have completed the Medical, Fingerprints, and Interview. I am still lacking the Psych and Physical assessment.
In regard to the interview, I am married, and have two children, and they did not even ask about them. I am presently called back to Active Duty in the Marines for my second time in the past three years. I thought the interview was straight forward, and they did not ask anything that I have not been asked in countless other interviews.

HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN!
I have completed my app, and BI as stated earlier, and on my BI info, it asked me about my credit. Well, I answered truthfully, that to my knowledge there was nothing wrong with my credit. Well, I just checked my credit using the free "once a year" credit thing, and it shows that fams has checked my credit as of 2 days ago. Which is great...the process is moving. I'm stoked. The only problem is, it appears that there were things that I am now disputing on there. The problem is, the fams saw the stuff that was on there, before I could dispute it. I guess I should have checked it earlier. God this sucks. I hope this doesn't ruin my chances. I honestly wasn't trying to hide anything. I mean, for example, 2 of the things are student loans, which I have applied for a deferment with due to financial hardship, and was accepted. Yet, there they are on my credit report as being like 90 days past due. Such BS. I really hope this doesn't ruin my chances. I need some words of wisdom and some encouragement. Any suggestions would also be greatly appreciated.

I know for sure that they do not get cars. There is some type of mileage reimbursement. This is what a FAM on another board said:
"And your mileage is paid on all overnighst to/fom the airport. So an overnight is worth about $96 plus mileage...all tax free!!! Plus, in some cases, mileage to/from the airport for regualr days are paid, depending where you live and distance to the airport compared to distance to the office, etc..."

I'm just a schmoe, but have significant experience in federal contracting. The JFTR (Joint Federal Travel Regulations) is the reg book that governs all federal travel. It specifies the mileage and the per-diem rate, and when you do and don't rate it.
Mileage from your home to place of duty on a daily commute is not chargeable to the government.
If you return to your home that evening, the same home that you left that morning, it's all on you financially.
If you land, and had to overnight, that would rate peridem in the form of Govt Lodging for that areas rate, and would also rate Meals and Incidentals monies. (hense the having to show ID at checkin)
I have no idea as to how claims are filed at FAMS, but am certian they are bound to the provisions of the JFTR.

Activity should start picking up in the near future, as far as hiring is concerned. Keep your comms(cell) on at all times in the coming months. It is MY OWN assumption that if you have completed everything (including the PTA). Chances are very good that you will be getting a call in the NEAR future (NEAR FUTURE= 1 WEEK-1.5 MONTH). That is all the info I have. Good luck to everyone and don't get discouraged...... it's worth it!

Where in AVUE is that type of data communicated to us. I checked under my background investigation. I opened the only one that is active, and it only contains the things that I have sent, or provided in the initial workups. Is there a place that they track or confirm one's progress through this process. For example, a confirmation of reciept of fingerprint cards, or completion of the panel interview?

Someone over on the 911 forums said this
"I just got off the phone with FAMs medical after inquiring about that infamous psych recert email. They said my name wasn't on the list yet from Human Resources. FAMs medical receives a list of people to send the psych recert email too. She said, if you receive that email, you've pretty much been selected by the Final Hiring Panel and it is the last step. "
So I guess thats a good thing for those of us who get that recert email recently, I sure hope hes right :)

My fingerprint cards can be viewed in the backround sec with my medical/BI release forms. There is nobody to call to check status. If you call Avue or FO they will give you standard answer to keep checking e-mail.If you get call for medical than you passed interview.

Don't be too worried about it. I interviewed there. Everyone there is super nice. Maybe just look up some of the normal LE interview questions. Be prepared to spend a bit of time there too, because if you have to do the psych test as well that takes quite a while. Something like 700 or 800 questions I think.

I did the FBI phase 1 exam last month, the day after my Air Marshal panel interview. I thought it was one of the most difficult exams I have ever taken, and that counts the exams to get a miliary flight slot. Well I passed the exams for flight schol, and I sure as heck passed the Phase I exam too. Let the games begin.
I am perplexed about this psych test. I got the call to come in for the test two weeks ago. There is just one problem. I'm in Cali on involuntary recall orders. They have passed me off to LA so that I do not have to fly cross country again, but I have not heard form anyone. I'm tinking I'll start shaking some trees and see what falls out.

No, the physical is the doctor thing. The problem is they might not pass you through the physical because of your ankle, or they might not be able to do it at all.

Well I had to run in place for a couple minutes to get my heard rate going, and I dont know if they would want you to do that with a screwed up ankle. Maybe they will just have you wait a couple weeks to do it. I dunno.

The physical I had to do was really simple. There were a lot of parts, (vision, hearing, EKG,) but nothing difficult. I did not have to do any sort of physical exertion that would have bothered a bum ankle. I think any doc would understand that it is a temporary thing.
I just found out that my e-mail asking me to schedule an already completed Physical was indeed sent in error. My first physical did not register in the system at AVUE. Alas the wait goes on....

Wouldn't worry too much about it. I had the interview and got the email about the Psych a week later. It differs from person to person. I took the medical before I had the interview. Most that I have read, had the interview then the medical. Just goes to show.

I did my Panel in mid june, and got the Psych call the week later.. I had also done my Medical before anything else. At the Panel interview, they told me that the process was being jumbled up so that Medical was at the end. I'm just waiting as well.

Just to clarify by physical I meant run/push-ups etc. I have the medical (EKG, Bloodwork) scheduled in the morning followed by the physical abilities test.
Does anyone know what the physical abilities test consist of??
Thanks and good luck guys & gals

I didn't do mine that long ago either, but pretty much everyone in the past that has gotten that email has been hired. Its apparently the last step in the process, probably after the hiring panel. The email that they sent me about it had about 19 other people that it had been sent to as well, and some of them got hired, and some have not yet.

Took my psych test a month before getting hired and still had to do re-cert. Another guy that got hired in my pta group did not get the e-mail and got hired. I would not give up on the August class just yet. The last hiring group calls went out with less than a week notice. It seems no matter how much LE experience or military you have if you don't have college degree it seems they send BQA letter. Just my observation and not intel.

I just called about my medical appointment. They're gonna call me back and mail me something to confirm a day and time. I hope my fitness assesment isn't gonna be after the physical. I don't know, getting blood drawn might affect my performance. I already did my panel, psych, and drug test. Does this mean the Background Investigation is going on right now?

Did you do your psych oral interview? If not this will be the next step after your Medical is cleared.

Dont you think theyd mention the degree thing in the panel interview, Not all Military have had the chance to finish it, im 2 years into mine because i finished service 2 years ago in the usmc. I dont think it will be a big deal. Also, i dont think drawing blood will be to detrimental to your fitness assesment, they dont give you that on the spot anyway, that is strictly medical. When i called QTC today to schedule an appointment they said they would schedule some in the next 2 to three weeks, i think they will move faster. as august goes, i think we might have a lock if the process rolls smoothly, read this post, these guys move fast, one second you are standing by, the next you are hired and scheduled for take off!.
