I got the call today too! One month between start date and actual training. That should be fun!
Thinking the same thing.... anybody have any thoughts/suggestions on where to live in DC for a month before training starts??

I realize that all federal time, etc. will transfer but does anyone know if the FAMS have an issue with someone technically being on the payroll of their current (city) department while they burn time and while in training with the FAMS.

Check craigslist or any other rental website there may be someone trying to sub-lease. As for location I would check out Arlington (inlcluding Crystal city, Pentagon city and Rosslyn), Clarendon, or Alexandria. They are all fairly close to DCA and if you have to go to IAD then at least you will be going against traffic. Although I do not know where the DC Field Office is located (I will find out once I get my EOD), that is a big factor and may change where you want to live.

Have to wait to be cleared by medical - hopefully the delay doesn't cause me to be axed prematurely (knocking on wood while my fingers and toes are crossed).

They don't shack you up, you pay out of pocket which is very costly up north but if it is to much for you, Im sure some guys who got the thin letter would gladly pay the bill if they could, beside you walk away with about 4 g's after training.

I need the advise of somebody who is already in the FAMS. I applied for the Federal Air Marshal position this past February. I got my application in on time along with all of my supporting documentation. Shortly after, I received an e-mail stating that my application and all documentation had been received. Then, I received an e-mail informing me that the physical fitness test standards had changed. Having received both of these e-mails I know that the FAMS does in fact have my correct e-mail address on file and that they do not go to my spam or junk e-mail folders. After having not heard anything for several months, I call the help desk to inquire about the status of my application. I received a phone call back today saying that I was given a conditional offer of employment back in June but did not accept the offer within the prescribed amount of time. I swear on a stack of Bibles that I never received any such offer. If I had, I would have accepted the moment I received it. Now I am being told that nothing can be done about it, there might be another hiring announcement sometime this fall and that all I can do is re-apply. Please tell me that there is SOMETHING I can do. I just can't believe that there is nothing. If anybody has anything to offer besides, "suck it up and deal with it, better luck next time" I am all ears. Forgive me in advance if I sound upset. I understand that mistakes happen. It just deflates all motivation that I have that I was found acceptable to be given a conditional offer of employment, and now I have to wait for another round of hiring, re-apply and start the waiting game all over again because of a computer glitch or because somebody forgot.

I'm so glad I'm already well-established in MD. That does have to suck though to have to be here for a month and then leave and come back 4 months later.
So you're volunteering to take us all in? Thanks! :p

Dude....having worked for DHS at the FAMS HQ in NVA (up until 3 weeks ago)...and knowing how DHS/TSA/FAMS works....I hate to say it, but it is what it is.....and that's your SOL....
I know you don't want to hear that but they have so many folks applying if you miss something.....they drive on like you didn't want the position.....and will not go back to folks. I have heard that from the HR folks and the Supervisory FAMs that I worked with.....
You can call all you want/whoever you want.... but it will fall on deaf ears.....

I guess that is the part that urks me the most. The assumption by not just you, but by HR is that I missed something. No I did not. Not just that, but this is want I want to do with my life. Lots of people apply who don't really care one way or another but I do. It sucks that people (no refering to you personally) can be so damn apathetic about it like its no big deal.

And honestly, the HR folks don't care.... They have so many people that have applied that if there is any glich (whether it was your fault or not) they just keep going on....
Thats why several of the guys flying now have told folks to be careful when you talk salary with them. You tick them off.....or if you start making demands....they will call the next person and your done.....

I saw this first hand the day I got hired. People were trying to negotiate for an extra grand or two. They were told by HR that they would think about. Needless to say they are not with the agency. Additionally, I saw a lot of you talking about coming in as an H Band. I'm sure that most of you will come in at the low-mid G band which is fine. If you come in at an H you only get one huge 8% raise while those at G get 16% over two years. After that it is up to the wonderful system known as the IPI which is pretty much a way for bosses to give their buddies or butt kissers a raise while everyone else just gets a cola. Just some food for thought.

I am in the Dominican Republic on vacation w-no cell phone service lol. I swung by a local internet place to catch up on the forum. Congrats to all who are moving foward and have a solid start date!
I was worried about not having access to my cell phone, but by the looks of it Newark still has not released any calls, and as of today I am still green and flying. No worries. Hard to be stressed with the beautiful scenery around here!
Best of luck!

This exact same thing happened to me. Two words...spam filters. That's where my COD went. The only way I caught it was I called HR to find out that I got the COD a month ago, and I immediately accepted. However, what sucks is that you can see where I am in the process now. I have no idea if I'm going to be dropped because of this or they will tell me "tough luck". I am hoping that I just get rolled into the next group of applicants. But, you're going to have to wait until the next announcement to apply.

Hey for those that have not received a call and are still hoovering with no red X stay positive. I talked to the field office and my guy that works for social security administration for the federal government. They have a hold for the remaining positions until the new budget is passed in October. Once they receive their new fiscal year budget they will start calling alot of us that are still waiting. And for us from chicago that is good news because i think the new budget will bring more opening in Chicago!!!

I am in the exact same boat as you. I supposedly received my offer in June as well but do not recall ever seeing any e-mail in my inbox or junk mail folder because I checked both routinely to make sure that did not happen. Oh well I guess I will just suck it up and reapply in the fall when the new announcement opens up.

I did not negotiate for pay last year but I am kicking myself in the butt for not trying to get them to match my vacation days off I had with my old LEO job. It sucks starting over getting less days off per year than you had. I am not sure if they would have done it but I wish I would have thought of it then.

09-11-2009, 12:48 PM
They will match pay If you ask and can justify it to FAM management. I have never heard of the gov matching vacation time from a non gov job. The justification should include previous FED time. It also helps with bypassing the 2 year probationary period, if you have completed a previous FED probationary period.

During my phone call, the gentleman I spoke with did not have my salary information. He said he was just making phone calls and that HR would be working on the pay before I received my letter. He gave me a POC to refer to, and I still have not received my letter. Unfortunately, there was no room to negotiate on the phone, since he did not know my salary information.

Hey Echat,
You do know that GS-9 is the low end of the G band. It might be more important to ask yourself what is the promotional potential (i.e. is it a 9-11 or 9-12 or 9-13) if promotion goes up to 12 or 13 then you should take that job but if it is only a 9 then you might want to reconsider, because at least this job you have a chance to move up without having to change positions. Just my opinion though. Good luck though it has to be stressful right now.

You also have to consider locality. I am a current federal employee and my current salary is base + locality. I am on a noncompetitive 7/9/11 appointment with potential to 13. I get my 9 in October :-)
My current job is moving to MD. I currently live in NJ. I would be taking a 4% locality pay cut if I were to follow my job. I have done some salary comparisons. If you want to PM me I can show you the numbers I came up with for general GS government jobs vs. FAMS pay bands.
One of the benefits that I have found with FAMS is the law enforcement retirement. It is better than the current retirement for GS general government workers.
One member wrote that if one position had promotion potential to GS 13, they would consider taking that job over the FAMS offer. Why?
I understand the benefits to keeping a basic government job... weekends/holidays off, able to use vacation and sick time as you wish, and stable 9-5 hours (or alternate work schedules if you are like myself). I was just wondering what your reasons for choosing the GS13 potential job vs. FAMS. Because I am currently in that situation, but the FAMS wins on my end.
Just asking... do not yell at me or get vicious.
ACYV223
09-14-2009, 01:30 PM
Hey williamske,
I was the one who said they should take the GS 13 job only because it appeared that it was a toss up between the one job and this FAMS job. Every situation is different and I completely agree with everything in your post I just did not explain myself clearly I guess. I am currently a 9 with a 19 % locality pay and I just wanted to warn echat that a GS-9 is equivalent to low end of the G band. I also believe that in my situation I would choose FAMS because you are an LEO and retirement is a lot better than non LEO jobs. Moreover, this job/career, simply put is exactly what I want to get into, but that is only my situation.
You also have to consider locality. I am a current federal employee and my current salary is base + locality. I am on a noncompetitive 7/9/11 appointment with potential to 13. I get my 9 in October :-)

Ok cool :-) I was just wondering.

What is the average time for you guys to get a call for a final offer after you completed all the other issues(Med/Drug/Background). Finished mine and still waiting on a Final call. Pulling my hair out again, what little I have left!

I wish it were a toss up. The FAMS is what it is. The other one is an FBI job in my current career field. I would be at Quantico versus WFO, but I still get DC locality. It's not LE so yes, no travel, no weekends, stable hours, etc. But here I have an opportunity with FAMS to do something completely different, which I may or may not enjoy or be good at. I still think it's worth a shot.
Also, I would not get LEAP with the FBI. At first, they were starting me at 41K and I balked and said no. Now they're telling me they are willing to pay me for my education and start at GS 9. I know FAMS will pay more, but now it's close enough to consider other factors. Still think FAMS is too good an opportunity to pass up. I could always go back if it doesn't work out but I may not have this opportunity (FAMS) again. Nonetheless, it is a good situation to be in. I just wish I could negotiate salary with FAMS, which I can't do because they haven't given me one yet.

I got a question for current FAMS or any that are in "the know". I know that a cursory background investigation was done that included credit and criminal checks and that the full TS investigation will continue while candidates are in the academy. I guess my question is, does anyone know of someone who went to the academy, completed it, and was subsequently dismissed as a result of their background investigation?

Congrats J-mac! That's gonna be kind of tight for you having to report the end of Sept. Giving two weeks notice to current employer and moving your family from the west coast. Good luck with everything though.
Are we covering the costs to get out to the field office (initially) or are they? I know they're not moving us out there, but I was hoping they would at least get our ticket for when we have to report at the end of the month (these costs are just piling up).
In fact, does anyone know ANYTHING? I'm ~12 days from reporting and I dont know squat. The communication is poor at best.

My guess is that they will do one of two things. 1. Send us an email telling us NOT to apply for the next announcement since we're still in progress, or 2. Terminate us where we are, and have everyone start over from the begining. (Sounds like a waste, but it makes sense to them)

Staying out there for a month, only to go away for 4 for training is just ludicrous. Extended stays are trash, and apartments don't want to rent for a month. Fun stuff.
I guess I'll start sleeping at the airport. Might as well get used to it now, right? :D

the cost is all on you until you go to acy for one week and then to artesia and then back up to acy...
in acy your lodging is covered...food is not but the hotel has a hot n cold breakfast...lunch and dinner is on you....there are local grocery stores which you can get food. your hotel room has a small fridge
when you are in artesia...your lodging and food is all covered....
at the end of training they will fly you back to your FO city unless you are going to WFO or NYC(drive back)

So you are saying that while training for 2 1/2 months in NJ lunch and dinner is not provided?
BPD Once

That is correct. During your 10 weeks at ACY you are responsible for lunch and dinner. There is a grocery store down the street that is clean and reasonable. They have a pizza deal on Mondays for a large pizza at $5.99. It will feed you for two days or so. Additionally, at the end of training you get a per diem check for roughly $3,500. I spent about $25 a week for food and went home on weekends.

So you caravan back in company vehicles or are you expected to bring your own vehicle?

If you can drive there from your FO you're probably taking your own vehicle.
Honestly, I would expect the FAMS to make you pay for most things up front and reimburse you later. You're probably going to have to pay for hotels, airport parking, etc while you're on duty and submit an expense report later. There's probably a lot you're going to write off on your taxes too.
Ohh, I get what he's saying now. They'll fly you back to your home FO, not the one youre assigned to? That leads into another question; how long do they give you to report, post training (so you can get moved).

I'm sure most of your questions will be answered by the time you start. You do have a month before training anyway. Also, I haven't received my letter yet, but I would imagine there's some information in there, no? At any rate, once you have an actual "boss", I would direct these questions to him/her. how long do they give you to report, post training (so you can get moved).
This decision is usually made at your office, UNLESS it's changed you may be given 3 days or an entire week...it completely depends on the Admin Leave they will allow and a lot of that depends on your SAC and ATSAC. There is a FAM policy regulating this, but it's really controlled internally.
Guys, here's a couple little tips from someone who's BTDT.
You need to stop freaking out about everything you don't have an answer to, one thing about FAMS is that things will change A LOT so you have to just get use to not knowing and going with it. EVERYONE in the last few hiring cycles has been through everything you're going through, believe me when I say that all of your questions have been asked and answered.
Where to live? If you're moving in from out of the area, for the first month find someone you can stand and get a room together (yes in a hotel), heck if possible take 3-4 people to a room and reduce the cost to as little as possible on yourself. All you need it for is sleeping/showering. You're paying for this, it's your responsibility to find yourself a place to live, my advice? Find some place close to your FO, ie walking distance if possible ESPECIALLY if you don't take your POV.
What will we do the first month? Paperwork, paperwork and more paperwork. Did I mention paperwork? I would say PT, PT, PT and more PT but that also depends on your FO. My FO killed us, we'd PT for 4 hours a day...and I'm NOT exaggerating, but when we met in ACY there were people who hadn't done anything that month.
Training? Artesia sucks, 'nuff said, just deal with it. ACY is fun, Atlantic city is a dump, you feed yourself lunch and dinner....yes it's out of your pocket...yes it sucks, get over it. You'll be reimbursed at the end of training for expenses (except what you lose at the casino's and on the skeezers in Atlantic City)
That's all you need to concern yourself with, EVERYTHING else will be taught to you, and I mean EVERYTHING.

That sucks that they forced you to give them a decision so quick, but I can understand why they did that. They obviously wanted to know whether to pursue someone else or not. All that matters is that you feel you made the right decision.

Im waiting for hiring to start in Houston, im in talks with a Marshal from Houston that I met a few months ago after getting into border patrol didnt work out for me. He sent me a flyer about 3 weeks ago saying that the West coast is starting to the process for Marshals and told me they should be in Texas soon. How soon is it?? The Marshal im speaking to works for the Houston division and is suppose to be a big dog here, he's helping me get in. What region does Houston fall under, because Ive seen tons of forums saying different regions have started already but I dont know what region Houston falls under. Ive been reading a lot of peoples statements and learned a lot so far.

from what I understand (and I could be wrong, please correct me if I am) Everyone being hired is reporting to NYFO on the date above... and reporting to training from there... if you have a Nov class date, you report at the end of this month and do paperwork/PT until your class date and leave from there. If you are going to get a call, you will probably be told to report at the end of this month.

In Artesia you have your own room that shares a bathroom with another FAMC in Atlantic City your in a room alone with your own bathroom. You are under FAMS control at all times during travel no deviation from the group plan. Get your car on the weekend.

For anyone, like me, wondering what's in store for us, I found this while perusing the FLETC website. It lists all the requirements FAMS trainees have to complete while in Artesia. I found it interesting. I also found interesting the things we DON'T have to do.

I think pretty much all of us starting next Monday are in the same boat. I know some of the guys that started last Monday (the 14th) didn't get their letter until the Friday right before they started (the 11th).

Yes, you might have to. 12 days is pretty gracious too, so make sure you're thankful for having 12 days notice.
P.S. Welcome to the federal goverment.
Seriously, I am really sorry if that was smart-***** response. It's not fair, and it down right sucks. It's a terrible thing for a family to go through, but, the feds don't really care.
Anyone notice that the dashboard is down today?
**Update. I called the TSA. I was dropped from the hiring process, but I can re-apply in late October/November for the new announcement. They told me that anyone who hadn't completed the process by August 18th was dropped because they had enough qualified canidates.

From your Signature line it says you didn't make it to the panel/ PTA/ SAC interview. Did you not get to complete those and that's why you were dropped or did you complete everything? Just trying to get a gauge - I cleared medical last Friday and I'm getting all antsy in the pantsy.

You're probably ok. I didn't get my COE until July, passed my credit check/criminal, but I never got invited to take the assesment battery.
I was told today, by that time, they already had enough qualified applicants and they didn't need anymore. There were posts up back around August that others were told the same thing...i.e. if the interview process wasn't completed by Mid August, you would not proceed any further.
Not a big deal to me. Gives me more time to get in shape!

Yes, I'm supposed to report next Monday the 28th and I have not received the email with instructions. I received the final call last week and was told to give notice, however I do not intend to until it’s on paper. Does anyone have the # of a POC at FAMS HR where I could find more details? I got my call two weeks ago to start this Monday and I don't even know what my salary is going to be or what time to report or what to wear!
You'll wear a suit your first 1-30 days (depends on the office), but definitely wear one on Monday and take enough business casual clothes to get you through a week. You may not get your welcome packet until Friday...sucks, but it happens get use to it now. Best thing to do, try to get a phone number for the office you're going to so you can call and get directions (or have someone check your email if you're not able to) by the end of this week. That's all you have to worry about, take gym clothes in a gym bag in case you PT your first day, take pens and paper to write notes on and be ready to fill out a LOT of paperwork...

I drove 900 miles yesterday to start the process. Left most of my stuff in storage in my home city and am now at my parents for the remainder of the week. Good thing I brought the suit with me just in case... Kinda nuts how we're all left out on a limb here.
I have to say that during the FBI process I knew EXACTLY what to expect, months in advance. What a difference, although I'm still happy to be on board. :)

I looked over my offer, just a little confused about the salary.
You have 1. base salary 2. base salary + locality 3. base salary + locality plus 25% of that total figure, right? I calculated my base salary with locality plus 25% of that and I came up with about $3000 more than what they say is my final offer. Am I missing something here?

The 25% Leap pay is off of your base salary only not base salary and locality pay.
So the calculation would be Base salary + (base salary x locality pay) + (base salary x Leap) = your final salary

There's no rookie prank in what I said, you may dress business casual everyday while you're at your FO, or you might be lucky enough they'll let you wear jeans and a polo...all depends on the FO. Mine was suit days 1 and 2, then business casual everyday for that first month.

Question: On one of the attachments it states that we need black sole shoes. Is this referring to combat type boots or literally shoes that have black soles? :D Thanks.

I am in the still "referred for selection" boat. I was under the understanding that the only time you had to go through the entire application process again was when you received a rejection letter/email. I called HR and I have not been removed from the process. When the new announcement comes out I will reapply, and then hopefully they will see that some of us have already gone far through the process. I would think that they would not want to waste money re-interviewing/retesting those of us who have been through the entire process this summer. But I am probably wrong lol.
Still hoping.

Key word in your statement...."bored". That and the fact that they don't let adults be adults. Oh and lets not even get into the micromanaging. I sometimes thought that they believed their jobs were to write people up. It always amazed me how difficult they made their job. If they would have just left people alone, they could have closed the doors to their offices and slept for most of the day. Couldn't figure out which was more worthless, the management or the PDA's. At least you could turn the PDA's off.

You could turn the old PDA's off. Now that we have advanced our devices some of these ***** clowns expect replies immediately. I'm waiting for the first write up for someone not answering their phone when they are lets say at the beach for vacation and on a jet ski for a few hours. I caught that one myself which has left me disillusioned with the joint and looking at the possibility of other things.
You think that's bad?! I actually caught **** for not answering my PDA while my wife was in labor and I was in the delivery room with her. The phone wasn't on me, but when I did get home two days later the message and email were on there. That ended when I sent an email to the SAC and cc'd the knucklehead ATSAC trying to give me a hard time.

ThanAgain: why all the negativity in here? but to add to that negativity.. HR said all 2009 air marshal selection had been made.. So it looks like for everyone still on "referred selection" or waiting for Final Offer.. we might be out from the running. I am not 100%, but this is the direction it seems to be going.
Did you speak with TSA HR? Or FAM HR?

gotta wait till I go to lunch to call them back. It very well may be for another medical followup but at least they are still doing stuff with those of us that got referred for selection.

I wonder if they can track us with these new phones? I noticed the phone has a GPS on it but I can not use the feature.
Also would a FAM on suspension have to answer the phone? I bet they would try and write the FAM up anyways.

170 more hires between New York and DC this fiscal year. Taking apps again this NOV If you are still in the pipeline it is undecided what you have to redo but I know you wont have to retake the test but everything else is still up in the air.

my mistake, i misunderstood what you wrote, but to be precise,
when you are at the FO they will make you sign a contract that you have to stay in the FO for at least 3 years...

Again....What is wrong with what he wrote? They do make you sign a contract saying you understand that you will be at the FO for at least 3 years.

Do not come here! Only bad things will come if you come here. The real bad news is that we should be on the GS pay scale by the end of the year. So for all the new hires that come on after it becomes law will never get to the pay the current I band FAMs are at now. The rumor is that they will make the journeymen level for us at GS13. But I have a feeling they will make at GS12. The reason I think this is if they make us I bands GS 13 then I will get a ten grand pay raise. Just my 2 cents on that. But as far as I know congress votes this week on making all of TSA GS employees. About dawn time! I have not had a raise since I made I band back in 2004.
