Have you considered applying with ICE or the Border Patrol? ICE is a great gig and will keep you home to see your kid(s) grow up. It also offers much better career potential and the agency is run much better. If I wasn't single without kids, ICE would've been my first choice.

I was just looking for ICE positions that are available. You can apply at usajobs also right? thanks for the info. My time will come soon!

I hate to bring up someone else's misfortune, but maybe this is a good sign for the rest of us. If his dashboard was updated on the 18th, and he recieved a red "X", maybe the rest of us who are still green means we got selected and just havent been contacted yet.

And sorry USMC, as a fellow vet I know how frustrating this process is especially when everyone always tells you that your vet points will help you alot. And the truth is alot of times they dont.

I agree that if you don't have the ugly red X yet, you probably will be contacted. Good luck to all of you!

Background investigations are not initiated until you are hired. I have cleared all the steps and am waiting for a class date. Local FO's have nothing to do with the final offer, it originates from HR.

So the FO's do not have an option of who gets placed there? Local FO's are not permitted to request that a candidate receive an offer from them if they have openings?

Do you know for sure that they're nothing holding you up such as Medical follow ups? Seems odd to have cleared all the steps and not be assigned a class date. Even though you say the local FO has nothing to do with the final offer, I'm sure that they can find out exactly what the hold up is. How long have you been waiting?

I have been reading the forum for a couple weeks now, and I just got validated. First, I want to congratulate all the people who are moving on in the process. As for me I am keepingmy fingers crossed that I will get a call sometime soon. I did my Panel/PFT/SAC interview in mid July. For anyone who asked the question about BIs before, I did not see anyone explain it completely. So in this post I will try to do that for people who are still wondering. Some people might ask, so the reason I think I have an understanding of the process is because one of my collateral duties is as the Local Security Officer for my FO (not TSA, but a different sub-agency), and I had to attenda training on Personnel security issues (which includes the BI). Ok as for the steps:
1. Once agency sends a conditional offer, they will coordinate with eQip to grant you access to the website, they will call or e-mail you to tell you to start the eQip BI process (you have a limited time to access the website, so when you get notification I think it is 3 days or 72 hours, but they should mention that in the e-mail).
2. Fill in the SF86 using eQip (some questions you will have to go back ten years, and others 7 years) * a tip- if you have done an sf86 before go get your old one and use that info on you new one it will save you time.
3. Once SF86 is complete, agency's personnel security division will receive your SF86. They will begin the first of 2 BIs. This first BI is only a "suitability background investigation" this is to make sure you are worth the money to send you to offer you a job and send you to training. This BI can be completed in a day or two, but since these investigators have to schedule many interviews with the people you know it is difficult to schedule everything on the same day so it often times take about 2 weeks to a month to complete the process.
4. Once initial BI complete and positively adjudicated, the angency can feel free to make you a final offer. At this time they will initiate the background investigation for your TS clearance. This can take anywhere from 6 months to 18 months on average. So in the meantime you receive an "interim" TS clearance, which means your TS clearance is in process they are giving you the job under the pretense that you will pass the BI and if you do not pass the BI or you lie about something on the SF86 you will first get grilled then fired.
5. You will receive notification from personnel security division of your successful adjudication on BI.

Now I do not consider myself an expert, but I am just passing on the knowledge that I have. If anyone has a different idea on BIs or wants to add something I forgot please do so. I hope this helped anyone still worried how the process goes.

Hello all. Been reading for some time now, but just joined the 'support group' -hehe

Congrats to all that have been moving forward!

My own situation is that I did the Panel/ASAC interview on 8/10, PT on 8/14, and have been sitting over Referred since the 18th.

I chose DC (and live close by), am a white male in mid-thirties, 6 years USMC (no points, though), and averaged out to 'Fair' on the PT test. I think my interviews went well enough, but without LE experience or vet points, I'm worried that I'm simply not qualified enough.

Oh- I WAS asked by someone to confirm if I had a degree or not. (I don't yet- I'm equivalent to a 'senior')

You better make sure your UNCORRECTED vision in BOTH eyes is not worse than 20/100 or you WILL get booted.

Mine was 20/200 before I got LASIK. If you're considering getting LASIK, it is worth EVERY SINGLE PENNY. It might be expensive and a grueling 30 minute procedure to go though, but the results are PHENOMINAL!!

This requirement is usually pointed out in the job announcement and it was not cited originally. It is however a requiredment for USSS. . . And listed as a requirement in their announcement.

I could be wrong. But I specifically looked for this before applying.

I can understand your point, but experience has taught us that we're given notice of the "not cited originally" after the fact. I'm just trying to let people know.

So... who thinks that not getting a call by the E.O.B. today means that you were not selected?
Of those who got calls this week or last to move forward how many of you had both LE experience and a degree?

The Fams use title 14 CFR Part 67 and the Aviation Medical Examiners Guide, with exceptions. One of those being the uncorrected distant vision standard of 20/100 any greater is listed as a disqualifying factor.

I am curious about shifts, away time and that kind of thing. I would really like an "un-sugarcoated" look into what we are going to be living if/when he gets his official offer. We are both ex-military cops so I know the deal with being apart, I am just curious as to how long each week he will be gone, how long are breaks, is there a lot of mandatory overtime... we have 2 very small kids, and the thought of him being away (for their sake) is killing me!

I'm sorry for those thinking that I gave you a scare, but, here's the deal.

Take off your contacts or glasses. Go take an eye test with your uncorrected vision. If you can't see at least 20/100, you may be DQ'd.

This is what I was told back in 2005 when I Failed my Medical for having uncorrected vision worse than 20/100 vision.

The rationalization for this is that if you're in a fight on a plane and get punched in the face or some other event happens that your contacts or glasses dislodged from your face and you can't see, this presents as a major risk that the TSA isn't willing to take.

I wish I had had someone to tell me this PRIOR to going to my medical and I would have done something about it. I am just trying to help those so that you don't have the same issues that I did. I'm not trying to do anything but help. But, I think I am just going to keep my mouth shut at this point and wish you all good luck.

You will be.... ;)

I've got two buddies that were allowed to get surgery on their eyes and then go from there once the surgery had been in place 90 days.

This was 5 years ago....and I have been told by Supervisory FAMs that this is not the case any more.

If you can't pass the test, you will be DQ'd for med. You can reapply after you get it fixed....but for now, you will be DQ'd....

Vision requirements... I bet that is a deal breaker for many of us. My vision is maybe 20/100 uncorrected at best, with a half-tilted squinted look upon my face, but with my contact lenses or glasses my vision is better than 20/10. Perhaps things like this is the reason why they run more people through the process than are actually being hired.

I suppose I will go to my med exam this coming week hoping for divine vision or something? :D

An Air Marshal is a well trained professional who is ready to act when needed mostly to prevent a hostile person from taking over an aircraft. They do also conduct surveillance of persons of interest based off of intelligence passed from higher. An Air Marshall is a quiet professional who can blend in and not draw attention to themselves or fellow team members. Day to Day Air Marshals board aircraft and fly. If you want to kick doors and arrest people this this not the job. Also if your interested in conducting investigations this is not the job.

How did I do so far?

In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to O'Hare for a flight that was delayed for 4 hours. These men promptly escaped from a maximum secuirity stockade in the Chicago Underground. The investigator will interview you to give you a chance to correct any mistakes you made on your SF86. Also, they may coordinate some interviews with co-workers through you. But, each investigator is different, so at least expect an interview to quickly go through your SF86 with you.

Background investigation does not start until you get hired so expect your investigator to interview you sometime after that.

I am waiting on the call. Have finished everything. Guess its the two of us Formerfed. I thought we would have got it already.

This is just a guess on my part, so please do not take this as I was given this info by someone in HR. Again, this is only a guess!

I think the only reason you guys have been waiting so long is because they (HR) are waiting for more people to finish the Med/BI so that they can fill up a class. I believe this because they already had EODs go out for training for August (probably class was not full), so they moved it back to Sept. It seemed as though more than they expected applied so that backed everything up. I could be wrong, only HR knows.

Actually did mine while I was in Phase II. Actually did a few people's BI while we were in Phase II now that I think about it. Day I resigned was the day the approved my clearance. That was almost 2 years after hire.

That's funny! You think it would. But I doubt it. You can't schedule OT and call it LEAP......unless your working for the FAMS! I don't know how they've gotten away with it this long.......but they have.

Perhaps in your office...but in a certain Midwest Office, they play Tiger Woods, work on their first degree, collect Harley crap, and get some smuck to take them to Super Pollo @ Ballston Mall when they fly into DCA..... ;)

I think the overtime law suit will result in the scheduling of 8 hr days instead of 10 hr days to cut back on complaints and what not.

You can be scheduled an 8hr day and basically know for sure after delays you will be working a 10+ hr day no matter what. I think a lot of people get distrot when they are scheduled for 10 hr days from the get go, and then have 3-4 hrs of lay overs.

Most people, including myself, would not mind working the extra hours and it being considered LEAP. But that fact that they schedule 10 hour days seems to be the route of the issue.

I am not a FAM, but I would bet they would change their scheduling from 10 to 8 hour shifts with taking into consideration the extra hours could be LEAP before they would grant overtime.

Seems like a touchy subject though, so please don't attack me lol.

A difference in what...?

Learning how to play PSP better....? Learning an new language...? Getting a degree or advance degree...? Learning what hotels are offering the best guest programs so you can score some decent stuff....like Golf Clubs (that would be Crown Plaza and I think that's over)....

Just saying.....some of you guys think the job is highspeed.....and it's far from it....

Has anybody that processed out of Atlanta received the first call for Medical/BI?

APD, I got my call last Thursday for the DC office. They had me go up for my medical today. Just got back from Dulles about an hour ago actually. Also, got the email for my BI while I was sitting in the office waiting on the Doc.

Did not meet anybody up there that was not going to NY or DC. Some guys got NY that actually live in DC currently. Seems like kind of a crapshoot where they send people.

I normally ask this question from time and time.

Do any of you have a clue what a flying Federal Air Marshal actually does day in and day out?

I want you guys to answer this for me because I am real interested in all of your responses.

Oh and if you are wondering who I am. I have been with the FAM service for close to 8 years and have been flying the entire time. I have never had an office job ( chair FAM ).

Fly, Fly, Fly....and Fly again. 5 days a week for days at a time, overtime, weekends, holidays, 10 hour days or longer some days. Never home at 5 PM, never count on a day off, there is no such thing as a schedule, you get home when you get off your plane.

I've read your other posts, on this forum and on others. You've been INSANELY helpful. I hope other listen to you.

How about its a compilation of all the above.

Read, play Madden 2010 against your flying partner, learn a foreign language, get an advanced degree....LMAO

They help the pilots fly the planes...with guns.

Hahaha, when I use to travel alot for work that's what I use to do, to catch up on work that I needed to do on the airplane and get some reading done. Mostly, in a futile attempt to catch up on some sleep too. Since almost everytime I flew, I cross at least 3 time zones. ahhh, fun times! :D

Quick question for those who have completed their medical already....did your FO advise you of a dress code or did you just play it safe and wear a suit? Also, how long did you spend at the FO on the day of your medical? Thanks for the info, just want a heads up on what to expect on Thursday....

It said in the email business casual. Also, took 4 hours but it can be as short as 1 or 2 depending on who goes first. You have to do vision, hearing, urine, ekg and doctor. Then an exit visit with a nurse. The time really depends on how organized they are. If you're not doing it at a FO then it should just be you so not long at all.

Oh- Just in case anyone hadn't noticed, there is a USSS job posted out there:

Its cool and I will move to NJ, but I don't remember a ranking FO system on the application. I was told FAMS selected 140 out of the 500 that were ref for selection on the 15th.

I think faxing in the Mental Health Certification is the pysch eval. If you do not go crazy trying to fax this in then you pass. I have been trying for the past two days and still no luck. What is up with the busy signal all day. I guess I'll try again tomorrow.

Pretty basic, UA, eye test, hearing test, EKG, and then meet with the doc to go over the med forms you filled out. Took about 2 hours, make sure you bring change for parking. No free parking near the building.
