Dashboard just updated to say I took the assessment battery on 7/23...and I did the panel portion on 8/6 with SAC interview and PFT. It is way behind!
I called HR Access and was told I was in fact selected as a candidate and should receive a conditional offer in the coming days via email.
I wanted to let all of you non-LE know that I have a Master's Degree, three Bachelors, am a CPA, and received one excellent two goods, and one poor on the fitness test (I injured my ankle the previous week and could not do the 1.5 mile, well, I lightly jogged it in 15:00 and boy was it swollen!), but I do have an extensive martial arts background, if that counts.
Thought I would give a head's up given all the comments on who is and is not going to receive offers based on qualifications...and I am a white male, also.

J-mac, congrats on the info. You make some good points. I've been a LEO for 5 years, Detective for 1 1/2 in a high speed dept. B.S. in CJ with honors and that's it. 3 excellents (for my age 35) and the 1.5 mile in 14 mins. I pulled my calf about 3 weeks before and didn't want to re-injure it. I met with the SAC after my panel and am in the "referred for selection" group. Good luck to all.

Was the process similar in the since that you had interviewed with a SAC and then were given the "referred for selection"? Just curious as to whether the process is still the same from when you had that experience?

As I echo the Good Luck Chant to all who are still in the process!

No it was a lot different. The panel interview was first, there was no SAC interview. They called me the night of the interview and said that I had made it to the next round. They told me that I had to come back to the FO the next day. Just so happened that I had court, and asked to reschedule. They said no, so I had to go to the FO. Turns out this was all just for a drug test and written psych tests. About a week later, I had the psych eval and had a highly recomend from the Dr. Then, the next week, I had the medical exam. They called me after that and directed me to overnight mail my fingerprints to them in DC.... Then nothing for 3 months. I nearly had my bags packed, so it was pretty disappointing.

There was NO PTA...now, there is no psych eval for this round...

That's weird. I called the help line too and they were completely unhelpful. She took 10 minutes to access my dashboard and then pretty much told me whatever was on my dashboard, which I already knew. She said they will contact you by mail when they've made a decision. Not to mention, I could hardly understand her accent. I think i'll just wait...

I keep reading that people are calling HR and getting status information before its updated on TSA DASHBOARD. However, I just called HR and they told me that all they do is log onto TSA DASHBOARD and check our status. They see what we see so I don't understand how people are getting confirmation of of referral before its even updated on the dashboard.

I'm not believing anything until on that flight heading towards FLETC.

I don't remember who was stressing the point that education was irrelevant in the hiring process. It is certainly clear that it is. Just out of curiosity, how many people referred for selection don't have a degree?

I have a BA with a double major in Global Multinational Studies and Political Science with a minor in Business. I was argueing the fact that you need a degree to be considered this year, but I was being argued with.

As far as HR helpdesk goes, my dashboard was messed up a few weeks ago. Said I was applying for a TSA K-9 trainer, which is cool, but wrong. That is why I call to get updates. I have even had checkmarks appear and then disappear the next day.

Where did you get those numbers "500 and 200" ? Was it from HR or from a person at a FO? I have heard so many different numbers it is making my head spin. But if those numbers are correct, all of us who made it to the referred step should be proud. 500 out of 17000, thats pretty damn good.

I think that there is more to this than what we know.

I think that there are hiring rounds to fill the FLETC classes. I.E.

People in round 1, are referred for selection by August 15th for the September class.

People in round 2 are referred for selection by __________ for the October class.

People in round 3 are referred for selction by ____________ for the December class.

(This is assuming that there is more than one class before Jan 1 2010)

Don't forget that most of us got our COE's in June 2009 for the February 2009 announcement while some got there COE's the same month as the announcement. So, if there are two sets of COE's that went out, then there has to be more to this than what we know.

I agree, unless we know someone who is actually in the HR process, we are probably all way off. It is better to just keep your fingers crossed instead of assuming things. But it would be nice for someone of us to know a little more about the process. But the above statement makes sense.

I specifically asked HR how someone highly qualified with a fed security clearance, degree, and a near perfect PEB score could get passed on. I was told (and also received and email) that they had to make room for diversity candidates. It's not that you can't be competitive if you're a white male (obviously). It's fact that FAMS will hire a larger proportion of females and minorities. No one in HR will deny that fact. That isn't conjecture, theory, or opinion. I've encouraged my "diversity candidate" friends to apply. It's a paper and stats game with FAMS. Case and point..... I was in FLETCE with a minority female who was fat, couldn't do one pull up, ran the 1.5 mile in over 20 mins with no LE exp. FAMS was trying to contact her for weeks for a hard offer after she continuously blew them off. This wasn't before 2004-2005 when things weren't really competitive.

If that's the case, and you have an email, take it to a lawyer.

Have to say that I'd wish you the best. If you ask me, your services will be better served somewhere else. Trust me when I say that FAMS will only disappoint you.

Here's a dilemma for you all...

I am wondering if not getting this job is a blessing in disguise. I was offered a job with the FBI in Feb, failed my poly in April, got a letter rescinding my offer, successfully appealed the polygraph failure, moved to a new location, took a new poly, and passed. My background started a couple weeks ago. It is currently in process. Although my offer was rescinded, I was told that I am still being processed for the position. So if I take the FAMS job, does that really destroy my chances of ever working for the FBI? Do they really look down upon you turning down the job after the BI has been conducted? Has anyone ever done this? I currently have a deactivated status for FBI SA and I don't want to lose the opportunity to reopen that in the future. I am just wondering what everyone thinks. (and salary is not too much of an issue.) The other job is in the lab at Qtco so not too much traveling, which is a plus. But all things aside, how does that look for me in FBI's eyes?

EChat,

I have a family member who was offered a job with ICE and was going to fletc for that agency. However, once he was about to leave for fletc, he was offered another position with NCIS. He withdrew his application for ICE thinking he recieved a job with NCIS. However, something went wrong and NCIS sent a letter stating he was not hired. Freaking out, he called back to ICE saying he made a mistake and they hired him anyways. So I really dont think it would hurt you in any way with the FBI.

Well it sounds like that you have been in the fed system for awhile, I just don't understand why you don't know that there is a certain quota that the federal government have to meet for minority hires? This pretty much holds true for every branch of the federal government. If you got it in writting then by all means get it to a lawyer and have them look at it, it does sound like you have a case. That's just a shame about FAMS trying to get that girl, which really just tell you, when it comes to the government its the quantity that counts and not the quality.

Still hasn't gotten the call yet, still waiting. If I don't get it, well then I am just going to try my hand at something else. Best of luck to everyone!

Disappointment is part of the game when applying for Federal Law Enforcement. You could be the best qualified canidate ever, and be turned down, given no rhyme or reason.

Let's not turn this discussion into a p*ssing match about race or degrees or credentials. Don't we all have the same goal in mind? We might not think it's "fair" but, we all know that life isn't fair, right?

I was given a highly recomend back in 2005 from the FAMS and didn't get selected, I was upset, but don't give up trying.

I don't believe it matters at all. I actually (was dumb) and asked both agencies since I am far along in both. They both said that I have to look out for myself and both were understanding and supported me. One individual at one of the agencies told me that he was proud of me for setting my sites high and respected me for that.

So overall, I don't think it's a negative at all.

When I went in for my interview, the SAC said my base pay with locality (on average) would be in the high 50's low 60's. Then he said take 25% of that for Leap and add an additional 5 to 15 for per diem.

So I figured with a pay of 55K times 25% (add 13.75K) and another 5 for per diem and your looking at about 73 to 74K your first year.

Most will start at the low end of the G payband which is around 36000. Might be a little higher than that. Back in the day they would match your pay if you were coming from another FED Agency. Talking to a buddy of mine that was hired on about a year ago they won't do it anymore.

But here is how you can come to your salary without per diem and night diff or sunday premium or holiday pay:

36000 x locality (which is different, but lets say DC which is on the higher side of locality) roughly 22%.

So:
36000 x 22% = 7920 which added to 36000 = 43920...........Then
36000 x 25% (LEAP) = 9000 which added to 43920 = 52929. Give or take. Now add in the per diem and other things mentioned above and you could could make another 10K.

The bottom of the G-band is $38,776. I was told by the SAC and another Marshal that each person starts at $38,776, and then additional factors are taken into consideration, thus each person's starting base pay is different. For example, if you have an advanced degree such as a Master's, you get so much additional pay for that. If you have managed more than 10 people, you earn additional money. If you speak a foreign language, additional money. Prior law enforcement or military experience? Additional base pay. Thus, the G band ranges from $38,776 to $60,081, depending on a person's qualifications.

The half dozen or so individuals that I have spoken with that have received final offers said that most people are starting between $48,000 and $52,000 base pay, plus the 25% LEAP, plus locality, so for DC it would be more like $73,000 plus per diem.

I stopped believing the dashboard a few weeks back. It took 4 weeks for the assessment battery to turn green and 2 weeks for the panel to show green. All the while HR told me that it had been completed and they had record despite the dashboard not reflecting that. So essentially they told me not to worry about what the dashboard says cause they're still working out the "kinks."

That being said, my dashboard does not say referred, but my calls to HR confirm that I have been.

Salary depends on experience. That's why there is a pay scale. They will match what you make if it can be justified and in common with current postion. My FAMS buddies all started between 49K-55k base.

Does anyone know if all of the "referred" applicants are guaranteed a call or is it still "selective"?

I believe that it's still selective.

it means you performed poorly in the interview. FAMS does not select people because of race or any crap like that, and anyone who can't cut it will be eliminated in the academies, regardless of race or any other factor.

I thought that you were given a base salary and it is calculated like this:
Base + (base x locality %) + (base x .25) = salary

The above example shows leap being calculated off the base + locality pay number....not base only. Which is the correct way?

Wrong. The panel interview is graded on a pass/fail basis. Those who pass that portion are referred to the SAC for a second interview. If the SAC gives you his/her blessing, you are sent to DC for selection. The panel then looks at all the apps and then selects who they want. The problem with this being that the panel could/should look at the apps first to see who they want and then work their way down. There isn't any arguing the point that once at the academy, you are on a level playing field. It is also undebateable that diversity candidates receive bonus points on their apps.

you are completely wrong, candidates are ranked in 4 different levels, those in the highest level are selected first. the levels are something along the lines of most qualified, highly qualified, qualified, not qualified. those in the last category don't get hired. I think the fact that you are clearly ignorant as sin was probably detected by the FAMS on your panel, I'm guessing that may have had something to do with your ranking.

It is base x locality %, take that number and multiply it by 25%. jb5722 is correct with the formula, he is a FAM, except that his calculation should come to $54,900 not $68,625.

I wouldn't argue the ranking system seeing as I was rated as highly qualified. However there was no need to run a bunch of us through interviews if they never would've hired us had they just looked at our apps. first. My (along with many others) biggest problem is that FAMS ran a bunch of us through a process when we had no chance of being hired despite how the interview/PEB went.

TSA has changed their hiring procedure. Back in the day, if you passed your interview and didn't screw up the PEB, you were hired. The new way might streamline processes for them, but it really waste a lot of our time.

Dude, let it go!!!! Every one of us that has been through a hiring process has been rejected at one time or another. Just because you think you are most qualified does not mean the panel did. Move on, change your forum name and let the applicants that are still in the process exchange useful information.

Good luck to the hopefuls!!!

While you cannot enter the eQuip system, you can certainly gather all the data ready to be entered (it is quite lengthy and may require some investigative work on your end to complete fully).

That's if they start in the mid range of the G Band. I know quite a few people that took the job with a Masters and started with the same pay as someone who didn't with little to no experience. It's a craps shoot. If they give you anything higher than the lower end of the pay band, consider it a good day. I highly doubt that many will be brought on at $73000 after everything is said and done. That's just what buddies that conducted interviews have been telling me.

cuyler2281
08-18-2009, 09:24 PM
Depends. Not a crap shoot when it comes to salary. When they offer they will ask if its acceptable, its up to you to justify what you think your worth is. Simular to corporate. This is coming from 4 of my FAM boys. If you have a masters and they can get you for 38k, then they will. ALL of my friends were paid between 48k-54 base. 3 were military officers and one was a SSG. All had a degree. If your going to a high cost area ie. DC and NY you have a little more leverage.

And I've had buddies that argued the salary offered and justified it with experience and degrees only to never get a return call. So I would consider it a crap shoot. One thing to remember is that there are people waiting for the job that will take the offer. If you can get them to give you more, more power to you. When they called me they tried to give me the low end of the G Band. I argued my experience and education and they matched my pay. It took a few days but they did it. Had a buddy hired a few months after me and they basically told him to take it or leave it and that they would move on if he didn't. Just like with anything in LE, articulate it and articulate it well. Good luck to you all and stay safe.

I concur with manstown. I came on within the last 18 months and saw guys try to negotiate pay the day they were handing out offers. I accepted the pay they offered and he negotiated for a couple of thousand more. Needless to say, he didn't get the position. You have to take into account that thousands put in for this and many other agencies making the selection pool huge. From their standpoint why would they negotiate salary with one person when they can offer to the next person who is equally qualified. A few thousand up front is nothing in the grand scheme of things. In my experience they were fair in salary nearly matching what I made at my old PD in base salary. Add in the locality and leap and I was making what I made overall at my old job without putting in 10-40 hrs per week in OT. The money will come with the differential for nights and Sundays, holiday pay, and OT for international trips. I don't even count my per diem into the equation. Make the decision wisely and don't lose out because of an extra couple hundred a month.

If they call, you had better take it....as there are literally thousands behind you that will drop everything at a minutes notice to take the job....

I doubt they will give you another date because of that fact.

And I from some other postings.....Be careful if you try to get more money out of them. There are plenty of folks out there that won't do that just to get the job....and will get it over you because you are trying to haggle for more money.

First you are referred for selection then you get a second contingent offer. The security office will contact you and you will do the SF86 Eqip and schedule electronic fingerprint appointment. At the same time the medical office will contact you and schedule your medical and drug screening. There are several forms that must be completed that they will email. If you have health issues bring letters from your personal physician which will speed things up. Can take 2-4 weeks for HR to be notified that you have cleared security and medical. To clear things up, the security clearance investigation does not start until after you have been hired. Then the wait begins for the "Call".

I didn't do well on pushups or pullups. my situps were on point, and my run was marginal but my upper body strength is lacking.

I got a personal trainer just before the PFT (late july) and have been working with him, so I'm hoping I will be much better before I report to anywhere

Yes, that's what I was told. I thought it was strange also so I asked again and was told that it would unlikely for the full BI to be complete before I leave for a class and that it would be completed before training is finished. I am not sure if a final offer is given before we leave for training or if the BI has to be completed first.

You'll get whats called an Interim TS clearance while they do your background (which they usually start while you are in training). When you will get your actual TS is anyones guess....I waited for over 2 years.

Looks like calls r only going out from nyfo....I put down newark.

Well Newark, NY and couple of otehrs FOs were listed as hiring. Pretty sure that NY and Newark are two major FOs and we should have a good shot in getting into, since most people are unwilling to move to those two high cost of living areas. As least that's my positive thinking logic is telling me! :)

I was starting to think only NYFO was getting calls, but then brickster said he got the call and now I'm worried. I processed out of WFO and don't remember what I put on my application but I have to stay at WFO. Hopefully that's negotiable if I do get a call. I really never thought I would get this job anyway, but this waiting game is going to make it more of a letdown if it doesn't happen. Tomorrow I leave for a camping trip til sunday with no cell coverage so i don't have to think about it. Hopefully I will have a message waiting for me when I get back sunday night!

I also couldnt remember what my preferences were so I contacted the FO where I interviewed and he was able to look up my preferences. He told me I put down everywhere vacancies were available. DC, NYC, Newark, LA.......etc. and said I should have a good shot because I am willing to move anywhere.

You fill out some medical history paperwork and do the required tests to include a physical with a doctor at the federal health clinic. I suppose they could check your health records from the past as you do fill out a release with your SF86. I would would suggest that you disclose all the information they ask, because if they find out you lied you will be terminated.

Don't spend too much time thinking about it. It's probably something that happened in the interview. It's so subjective. You might interview in front of another panel or review panel that didn't like you for whatever reason.

Hahahah! That works for me too! Hahahaha! So anyone else singing along with the support group??

usmc00: don't worry about it man, i know how it feels. When I didn't pase Phase II for the FBI, I felt the same way too. Just don't dewell on it, you just have to look at it as it wasn't meant to be and the time just isn't right yet. With all of these job applications it all about the numbering game too sometimes, you will get your day. Just keep going!

Glad to have you guys around for support! Congrats Helo!

No kidding, I'm right with you! Still have the ol' plane hovering over referred for selection but no call as of yet. Echo comments of congrats to those who were contacted, and good luck to all still waiting in the "support group".

Congrats to all of u who got the call. Ive been around these forums a while now but never posted. I went through the whole process too and passed everything. No call yet but it doesn't look too good for me. I was told I was #3 on the pt test and I was referred. Now my dashboard says x over reffered for selection, dated 8/18. I am also a 10 pt combat vet. On the dash I have another vacancy announcement for fam 011. Anyone else have this? Please excuse my punctuations, I'm typing on my phone.

I hate to bring up someone else's misfortune, but maybe this is a good sign for the rest of us. If his dashboard was updated on the 18th, and he recieved a red "X", maybe the rest of us who are still green means we got selected and just havent been contacted yet.

And sorry USMC, as a fellow vet I know how frustrating this process is especially when everyone always tells you that your vet points will help you alot. And the truth is alot of times they dont.
