Hey all, I've been monitoring this forum for a while as well, and this is my first time posting here. I recently completed the medical and was wondering approximately how long after completing the medical were you all notified to take the PTA?
Thanks

I was called 4 days later. Then I completed it the following day. Then called within 24 hours to do another drug screen. There are many factors that could change though. If someone has a day off, mail, meetings, training, etc. I wouldn't stress too much about it. Calls are starting to go out, and if they kept you from the old announcement, you should be just fine. BUT I understand what you're saying. I have my cell phone glued to my hip. Good luck! One thing though, if you DO get "the call" you MUST post on here ;). Well you don't have to, but it'd be appreciated by a LOT of people.

Yea, all the sudden excitement and activity has me jumping at every phone call lol. It just stinks I had to bump my original medical back a week and a half to the next available appointment time they had because I came down with the flu.

I totally agree feedback is crucial, i was reading and getting motivated and learned alot from everyone else on here and when i got the call i was on like holy **** the magic 3 numbers are flashing on my phone. It was the last thing i was expecting when i got the call. I know the feeling of reading about other folks getting called and just waiting but hey we all have been in the same boat, keep checking your phones and emails and hopefully soon we all are able to meet at some point in this job. Time frames vary i have noticed alot from personal experience but they definatetly are fast tracking folks in comparison to how things where going before. Once the medical, PTA and transcript calls start coming and its all submitted and reaches the hiring panel withing a few weeks you should hear something. They told my group of 3 people who took out PTA withing 3 or 4 weeks we should hear something and it happened like that. One guy is still waiting because he had to complete an interview but all i can say is be as available as possible and get everything done as fast as you can on your side of the house. When i got the email for the medical at like 10am i called literally at 10:05am to schedule mines...so hope this helps a few out there.

Got a question for you more experienced in the process. Had to do another medical 2 weeks ago, (had knee surgery since the last one) my knee is good but I got a letter for more documentation (as expected) my doc is sending it out this week. How long will this delay me? I'm only waiting for the PTA. Thanks

As long as the FAM doc is ok with the documentation your doc sends them it should postpone much they will just have to adjudicate your new medical.

I'll put this out there. I'm not with the FAMS anymore, but still keep in touch with some friends that are still there. They have told me that both lists are going to be used and those that are only on the upper portion of the old list are going to be hired. Now how many that is.....I and they don't know. But from what they were told it is less than 100 and than they are going to start the hiring process under the new announcement. Take it for what it's worth.

under 10:17 is excellent, 10:17 to 11:41 is good, 11:42 to 12:51 is fair, 12:52to 14:13 is poor and over 14:13 very poor.
PULLUPS
over 10 excel., 9-10 good, 7-8 fair, 5-6 poor and under 5 very poor
SITUPS
over 46 excel., 42-46 good, 38-41 fair, 33-37 poor and under 33 very poor
PUSHUPS
over 54 excel., 50-54 good, 46-49 fair, 38- 45 poor and under 38 very poor
hope that helps

1.5 miles is not long distance

i understand that, but i would also say bench pressing over 315 for multiple reps is not alot of weight.meaning i have not trained for the run, should have but it just was not part of my cardio routine.and for those who have not trained for the 1.5 miles with a time limit it will not be a easy task.was just looking for a little info on the matter.

1.5 miles is not long distance
Everything is relative to certain individuals, to a sprinter 1.5 miles is long distance. To me the pushups pull ups and situps are a joke, to others the run is a joke and i am sure to some the whole pta is easy. It all just depends what your strengths are.

Having just taken the PTA last week, I can assure you if you arent in shape, 1.5 miles is a loooong way(due to inclimate weather we had to run on a tread mill) If it would have been the 40 yd dash very few people could hang with me but 1.5 mile sucks. To those that are going to take it in the future make sure you prepare yourself. I ran a mile every night for about two weeks and I still scored in the poor(13:42)range. Good Luck to all applicants!

My fault for being so short. Your best bet leading up to the PTA is interval training. Got to a track. 6 laps is a 1.5 miles. Sprint a lap, walk a lap, sprint a lap, walk a lap, etc. It will build up your endurance quickly.
I have taken several PT Tests in the last 6 months and leading up to them this is what I did and it really helped. You can also google interval training for some variations of this and you will find alot of information.

Ok,
I’ve checked this site periodically over the past two years. I applied back in 2006 and received the call just recently asking if I would accept a position with FAMS . However, being in the process as long as I have been and with the report to date fast approaching; and they’re still having me duplicate paperwork. I am skeptical whether or not they will actually have everything complete for the end of the month.
So my question is to the rest of you who have received a report to date of the end of this month; are they still requesting paperwork from all of you?

i have not got any calls to duplicate anything but in my interactions with new hires like myself and FAMS that have been on the job for a while it seems that things vary alot so there is no steady process on how things should go for the most part..but hey i guess it is what it is...best of luck to you in a few years it will all be worth it. This might be a dumb question, but do you have to live in a city with a feild office? Being in the consulting industry I live in Florida, but work in New Mexico, Va, etc...
If you do have to live in a city with a feild office how do FAMs work flights from other cities. For instance there is not a FO in Jaxsonville, Fl, but it a busy AP and has originating flights.

Most FO's require that you live within 2 hours of the office. All of your flights will originate out of your home airport. (you can't commute like flight crews do....FAMS can't deadhead for free).

DVAK9SP,
I received the same offer. It's pretty much standard. Depending on when you last did the PTA and medical, they just want to get an assessment before they bring you on. Therefore, if you have a EOD, you should pretty much base everything off of that date.

I have a question for you guys who have been hired recently (and congrats by the way! ). How long after your PTA was "the call"? I have my PTA a week from today, and am just trying to have somewhat of a realistic time table even though I know it is different for everyone. After the PTA, is that when the background begins?
knightrider26
03-06-2008, 10:03 AM
JHoss
I did my PTA last year in January and received the call 2 weeks ago. Others received calls 1 week after. So there's really no telling when you will get the call. Your recruiter who conducts the PTA will have a better knowledge as to when they may call. When I did mine it was a budget crisis and also a hiring freeze so that's why it took so long for me. Just be patient bro your time is coming soon.

I started looking for places in the NY area. Not having much luck; plenty of places just not that many that are affordable. Currently I live 30 minutes from Boston. I would have liked to have received Boston but after waiting 2 years I'm going to where ever they want to send me.

While in training, I would suggest any local secure storage facility. You can figure roughly 300 or so for the duration of your training- depending on the size of your vehicle. PM me if you have further questions.

I honestly do not even remember just because it has been almost 3 years since I applied but there have also been a lot of issues with the hiring freeze and things like that so I couldn’t gage how things would go now. All I can say is stay on top of whatever they ask of you and get it in as soon as you can on your side of the house. I always moved like lighting for whatever was needed. If it was documents they had in within the hour, a medical I was available the same day if possible. Good luck to you.

I started the application process last month but it took me a while to track down all the required documents. I submitted last week. I am transitioning out of the military and trying to find good federal job. Reading this forum has made me optimistic and worried that by july I will have to find a different job while waiting for the hiring process to move along.

Well they are just now doing phone interviews, I dont know if people are getting COE's before phone interviews. Getting hired by July would be quick but not impossible. They are hiring roughly 450 FAMS this year.

I applied well over a year ago. Then for some reason was told by Avue to re-apply earlier this year. I had a phone interview today with the DC FO. Does anyone know whats in store for me next? PTA or is the panel interview before?
Also, what is COE?
How was the PTA, hard or not too bad? I heard something like you may not have to "pass" but be in a close range of passing, but by the end of FLETC you have to pass no matter what. Is that true? Seems odd. I work out and go to the gym but never really practiced the tests, I just figured if I'm in decent shape I'll pass.

COE = Conditional Offer of Employment
PTA includes pull-ups, sit-ups, pushups and a 1.5 mile timed run.
Your goal should be all excellents for the PTA.

Just have them sent to you. The only time you'll need them you'll be called to fax them in. On the Avue Application site there should be a fax or mailing address to send them. But the only time I needed them was when the FAMS called and asked.
As for the timelines and the next steps, and CO's and when they all happen is different for everyone. So aasking when this step or next will happen, no one can tell you. The only people that can tell you when the next steps will come along are the people with FAMS HR or HQ.

My days are normally the same when living the life as a federal air marshal. With the exception of flight delays and a few passengers who drink to much while in flight it is normally uneventful. I am going to tell you how my normal two day trip is. Some of you may find it boring but for the number of you aspiring air marshals read carefully. We do not do felony traffic stops or kick down any doors. The training is top notch and high speed. I have a saying, “We get paid the big bucks for that one second you may have to actually go to work.”
I am scheduled to be at the airport at 0900. I live about 45 minutes to the airport so I plan for any traffic delays. I pack my bag the night before for the two day trip. I pack light because I do not check any luggage in for obvious reasons. I get out of bed at 0630 so I can eat breakfast and see my kids before my wife takes them to school. I am dressed and out the door at 0800.
I get to the parking garage of the airport at about 0855. I take my time looking for that parking space that will give me all the defense from door dings. I work my way into the airport and walk up to the kiosk machine and get my boarding pass. I then get cash out of the atm and grab the paper. And I then walk to security where I normally get ****ed off 50 percent of the time. I will not get into how I bypass security but it is a pain in the rear and it does not take an idiot to see how I get passed security.
Once the TSA screener has already blown my cover I get passed him finally and walk into the terminal. I go to the bathroom for one last check to see that I have all my equipment and take that last look to see if I look good for the women I may meet on the flight.
Now I am walking on the flight and fighting with all the other passengers trying to get a space for my bag in the over head compartment. Some passengers will just about kill you for a space close to their seats and it gets me going. I try to hold back my anger because I have learned that it is a losing battle for me.
I am now in my seat and praying that a passenger does not ask me to move so they can sit with a friend or family member. We finally taxi away from the gate and we are wheels up on time.
We are about 30 minutes into the flight and the passenger behinds me does the sling shot seat move to my head. Let me explain. The fat guy behind me is so fat that he can not get out of his seat with out grabbing the head rest of my seat. Now when he does this the action makes my head sling shot back then violently forward once he releases it. This really gets me worked up and I have many of times imagined myself taking out my ASP and striking him in the knees.
About 30 minutes later the fat passenger in front of me does the breaking your lap top move. Let me explain. The passenger will press the recline button on his seat and use all of his 400 lbs of strength and violently recline his seat all the way back into the top of my lap top. Now this just about breaks my lap top and really gets me worked up once again. I have a move that I like to use when this happens. It is called the cold air move. Let me explain. Once the passenger has his seat so far back that I can give him a shave, I will turn on the air vent and aim it towards the top of his bald head. This move gets one of three results. 1) He will turn around and ask me to turn off the vent, 2) He will recline his seat a little forward, 3) He will do nothing and his head will get real cold and I laugh inside.
I land at my first stop of a two leg trip. Once we taxi to the gate it is off to the races. As soon as the fasten seat belt light turns off all the passengers jump out of their seats like it was to save their lives. They rush to the isles pushing one another and stepping on small children. Now this also gets me worked up and on many occasions I have wanted to pull out my gun and yell,” Sit back down until I get my bag!”.
I get off the plane after only being pushed once and make my way to the food area the get a high price lunch. I eat healthy and this is a challenger to find some other food other then burgers and fries. I eat and get my ticket for the next 3 hour flight to our nation’s capital. The flight is the same as the one before and the passengers are up to their old tricks and moves. Every day I try to defend against these moves and so far I have not lost my mind in the process.
This is a typical day for me and at the end of the second leg I wait 30 minutes for the hotel shuttle to the Hilton hotel. Once I get to the hotel the front desk tells me that my room will not be ready for another hour. So I get worked up again and just suck it up and sit on the couch untill they call me. I hope you now see what I deal with every day and it is just about the same everyday. Have fun guys and good luck in getting on with the air marshal service.

Great post.
When I was USSS-UD I thought I would lock of jihadi all the time and save the world, didn't realize it's mostly post standing and protection is boring.
Seriously - anyone who is applying to FAMS read the above post and ask yourself "can I do the above for 25 years?" I knew there was no way I could do my job at UD for 25 so I left for the private sector. Just a reality check, not trying to be an ***. FAMS and USSS are closely tied, from what I hear the training is similar, same piece, and the mission is all about protection, not enforcement.
Good luck all.

Right now, I feel like a tampon here at my current aviation gig..they are going to use me until I can't soak up anymore and then get rid of me...so his post brings me hope ;)
But I do follow what you are saying....

Classic! How about getting the jacka@# sitting next to you to you not talk your ear off? One of the best lines I ever heard went something like this:
Pax: "So....what do you do?"
FAM: "I collect money."
Pax: "Collect money? What do you mean?"
FAM: "People owe people money, I collect it."
The passenger didn't say a word for the rest of the flight!

If I was a FAM, I'd probably fart as loud as I could on any given flight, just for my sanity's sake.

I applied for the Air Mashal job back in November 2006. I received my COE and then updated my profile, sent them all the forms .. . . never got an interview.
I just reapplied. It seems to have changed. Instead of getting a COE they said they would call me soon for a phone interview.

Intheair,
Yousent shivers down my back thinking about those days. You even made me a little angry thinking about all those days. Couldn't have made it any clearer than that. That's what you guys will deal with everyday. The only thing you left out was the flight attendants and pilots who want little to do with you until they see that one middle eastern person sneeze wrong or get out of their seat. Than you're their best friend. And for what? Because the guy had to go the the bathroom.

I got a call from the FAMS today asking me if I am still interested...I told them I am. They said, "good, schedule the medical exam..."
I said "I did it last week..." They said "Good!"
I asked if I was old annoucement or new...He said the old one and continue to march forward on the new.

Kamkze, I'm at the same point as you are. Applied 1/2007, interview 4/2007, received BI material last week, physical scheduled for 4/2008. BI's take forever, so I'm hoping they continue the process before the BI is adjudicated.
Also, under the new announcement, I got a message from some guy trying to schedule a phone interview. If you are in the same situation be happy that you're getting the call, but be ready for the process to take a year or two...
I've been reading this forum for months and only just received permission to post. (does Avue run this site? :p) Thanks to all of you who have been providing such useful gouge! :)

Yeah I am not sure how the BI is gonna work for me because I have a current clearance above TS. I think they will investigate from when my clearance adjudicated up until now but I am not sure. Kamkze-
I too have a clearance above TS and am currently a background investigator... knowing the inefficiencies of the process I'd say that they will just run a whole new background on you with no consideration for your previous clearance. But since the process will continue before adjudication it really won't impact either of us negatively... this will be the third time in a year that I've been interviewed by someone who does my job, it's a little strange.

K, I have not posted in awhile, as I had kind of given up during the hiring freeze. But, now I have finished my medical, I am gathering the BI info and new fingerprint card, etc.
What I am curisous to know, is when my medical clears and my background clears, what are my chances of getting the call? I have not yet taken PAT test yer, but figure I will get probably at least an average on it. (I hate running, but oh well). I will not max running, and may not max pull-ups. should max sit-ups and push ups though. Howerver, I have not even had the PAT scheduled. Just had medical on Monday, and also got this BI packet recently. Seems like a lot of us are getting this, and with this much money invested in me I would think chances are looking up. But, I don't want to guess about the Government. Any idea would be greatly appreciated. Wife is wanting a baby, and all is on hold cuz of this.

At the last facility I worked for we had a couple of guys go over to a DOD facility for a temp basis and they just granted TS to those guys in 3 days because of their clearance level. So we will see how they handle this.

I really don't see how the new pool could jump over the old pool. Most of us guys in the old one already have our medical done or scheduled. Would be hard to get the new pool pushed through ahead of the old pool. I hope the process moves faster for everyone, but if they run out of money it will come to a grinding halt. They won't say why, cuz they don't care about applicants. There is enough of us out there that they don't have to try and explain anything to us or keep us happy. If we drop out, or get a diffrent job there is someone waiting to take our place. I am curious how many people in the old pool are still wanting the job and didn't settle for something else in the meantime. I just wish I knew what the actual chances of a job offer coming were.

You are exactly right, it will be hard to jump people in the old pool mostly because of time restraints. Even if the process is sped up, you are talking a conciderable amount of time to do, panel interview, medical, PTA, all the paperwork etc., whereas we would only have to do, phone interview and panel interview. Just my two cents.

You are right, well, depending on the field office your dealing with. For instance, the filed office im going through, the applicants from the old pool whose packets are completed, are being pushed forward. Also the applicants from the new announcment will be fast tracked and may not be too far behind the the old pool applicants. ...................hey bulldog could u drop me a pm if u did in fact get the detroit call?
+1 just got a call
Hey Base, good to see your still around. PM me if u get a chance.

I didnt realize that different FO's were moving quicker than others. I just thought once your "packet" was complete it was forwarded to the hiring panel.

As far as I know and have seen here there hasn't been ANY movement in NY off the new announcement (except from the spam e-mails a couple weeks ago).

I was referring to the old announcement, but I am not sure about the new, I know denver is already doing phone interviews. They told me I wont get a phone interview until a decision is made on the old announcement for me.

Hey guys if you want to work for the gov, you should not turn down any field office! You should be as flexiable as you can for hiring and remember in a few years you can make a transfer!

I sometimes think they don't know what they are doing. I accepted the position in NY and the Chicago FO called me this past week for a phone interview. No use doing the phone interview unless it helps me stay in CHI, which it didn't.

I GOT THE SAME CALL AND ATTEMPTED TO FAX THE DOCUMENTS AND WAS TOLD WHEN THEY RECEIVED THEM THAT THERE WAS A LINE DOWN THE MIDDLE OF THE PAGES AND OPM WOULD NOT ACCEPT THEM THAT WAY. SO AFTER TRYING THREE TIMES I DECIDED TO SEND THEM VIA EXPRESS MAIL.

question for you veteran applicants... when Hr reps tell you to check with Avue exactly who are they reffering to. Is your status of application supposed to change or is there another way to check the status?

wow that was pretty fast! next step is the BI...heres my timeline for you guys who applied off the new annoucement:
Applied: January (about 1 week after the annoucement was released)
Phone Interview: Early March (about 1 week before the spam email went out)
COE: Today! :)
Good luck all! This seems to be a faster process than usual, according to the guys from the old announcment anyhow.

I have a B.S degree, 3 years local l.e. experience, airline experience, and certified pilot.. It took the FAMS 1.5 years to contact me for an interview.
If the FAMS are so short there is no reason why it takes so long to get back to you.. You could be the best applicant ever, which I am very far from, but to them you are just a number..
I think the article is right on..

I agree. I have 13 years of local law enforcement, college degree, with extensive knowledge, training and experience in investigations, criminal interdiction and much more. I stare at my phone everyday...waiting for the call.
