**former leo** ohh crap,, based off the thread title, i can already see what s heading this way,,,,but before you get ripped,,,it doesnt matter,,,just whether or not you are qualified and have the right demenor...but if you re a twig, you might get some flak from the bad guys,,but same holds true if you re plump.

I'm 6'1 170lbs...athletic, but slim build...I have had some perps that want to give me a go. Just remember, there is no such thing as a fair fight when it comes to policing. There's a reason they give us a gun, some "mace" and a "bat"!
Seriously though, policing is more about dealing with people. 98% of the time, it's your brains and your mouth that will take control of the scene, you don't necessarily have to be a tough guy.
BTW...if you are looking for a career in LE, you should practice your honesty. If you aren't a cop yet, why lie? :(

I work with a 5ft nothing gal and she is great. Awesome people skills and knows her limitations. No matter how big you are there is almost always someone bigger or has more friends.
Just make sure that you are confident about yourself and your abilities and you'll fine. If you are still concerned get into a good relevant to police work martial art.
Before I was a cop and I worked on the rapid transit system I enjoyed a good wrist lock no and again. It looks professional and scares the crap out of bad guys when you can have them standing on their tip toes from a wrist lock as you calmly tell them it's time to leave. :)

See, I knew it was an innocent mistake.
No worries friend. Just go to user CP (on the upper left hand side of the screen) and click. Then just change your setting and you should be all set.
This will save you lots of problems. :D
Welcome to this site, and enjoy it, there are great officers/LEOs here that have cool info to share.
Oops, I forgot to mention that under the User CP section you will then want to select, 'Edit Profile' that will take care of you.
Good luck!

You're real similar to me. I'm 5'10 and a little over 135lbs though. I'm the process of buying some weights and a bench though. Hopefully if I'm not too lazy I can discipline myself to actually get some results that I want/need.

I wouldn't worry. I'm 5'9". I've worked with male officers that are at the 5' mark (their duty belt looks like it belongs on a Ken doll).
Some agencies do have height requirements. Granted, the bigger you are, the less likely someone is to get confrontational.

"Slender"??? 6' tall and 140lbs? There are Ethiopian crackheads that are thicker than you running around lol (just teasing). I'd hit the weights and start eating a lot more (quality) food if I were you. Nothing wrong with being slender, I was 5'11 and 147lbs when I joined the Marine Corps, but adding some muscle to your frame wouldn't hurt either.
When I first got into the field (fresh outta the Corps) I got into a lot of scraps and I couldn't figure out why. An older vet told me "It's because you're so skinny. They think they can take you." Now I was in great shape... I'd run almost daily and could pop off a hundred pushups like it was cool. I was shredded, lean and mean, but you couldn't really see it through my uniform.
So my partner's words struck a nerve with me and I started buying up Men's Health, Muscle & Fitness, etc, for research purposes and set about putting some quality size on my frame. Now I am 6' tall and weigh in at 215lbs as of Wednesday. My once prominent six pack has now become a two piece mostly, but the majority of weight I've put on is solid. At the risk of bragging... I fill out a uniform rather nicely too lol.
Now I get crooks who remark about my size and I notice some of them sizing me up... as if considering whether or not testing me would be a good idea. Most of the time I find people are pretty cooperative with me. I dont think my demeanor has changed much either (in fact, people at my class reunion say "You're still the same") so that leaves my more imposing size as my guess as to what's changed.
If you do decide to start lifting, know that it's going to take a lot of hard work, smart eating, rest, and time to get bigger. You obviously have a high metabolism. So do I. I have to lift heavy and regularly to maintain my size. I stopped lifting when I went through my current employer's academy and I dropped from 200lbs to 178lbs in 3 months lol. It can be done.

I'm not comfortable at this point going to a gym. I'm too weak and scrawny. I know everyone's gonna give me a bunch of reasons to go and tell me it's not that bad, but I won't go now, so don't bother.

Can't blame you on that one, Conner. I hate going to the public gym, it sucks being the scrawny guy wandering around while everyone else is pumping three times your weight. I hit the weights in my basement, and I enjoy it much more.

When I was a student, 17 YOA, I was 5,4 @ 115. Since you can not be a bully you remain mild tempered and learn how to use your mind, "verbal Judo" in a sense. At the time you don't realize this, but it can benefit you down the road. I am now 6.0 @ 185. Not huge but able to hold my own and will always display my attitude which developed early on. Things will come along for you. Stay healthy.

I don't know if you were exagerrating with the height and weight and really just aiming your words at me and the other dude and whoever else is small. I don't see how I'm unhealthy though. I'm just naturally small in order to get big I'd have to eat an unhealthy amount of food. I eat just as much if not more then your average, average sized person. But it is frustrating to me how small I am. I'd give anything to change it. I was born the size of a premature baby (though I wasn't premature). I don't think I can get bigger. I mean I've gained 15 pounds since i was 16, so I guess that's good. I just don't know how to get to where I want on my own. I won't know what I'm doing when I lift weights, but I won't go to a gym. Basically I'm screwed.

I was exagerrating, sorry. I have a friend who has a really high matabolism, too. He's about 6' 3" and 160 lbs. He's is so skinny he could fit in a locker! If you already eat a lot then there's obviously not much you can do. When you get older though being underweight will be accompanied by other health problems, mainly digestive and intestinal. It sounds like you just have a high matabolism. If that's the case don't worry. But do worry if you can't correct that problem in ten years.

I know it's just due to high metabolism. My dad and my mom were both real skinny (especially my mom). Now they are probably considered overweight if anything. I hate my situation so much. I know I sound like a pansy, crying about this, but no one here understands how much it bugs me. NO ONE. :(

Man, don't worry about being small. Errr, as it matters on the job. My best example is one of the guys I work with, I consider him one of the two best Officers on our department. Until recently, he was about 5'6 and 135 lbs or so. (He's started eating a ton, taking supplements like crazy, and has now added 15 lbs muscle or so) Anyway, he puts up probably the best overall stats on our department. He is challenged the most also, but I will never be worried to have him as backup. Oddly enough, most of the time when he fights a suspect, he ends up fighting a woman. For some reason, they just won't leave him alone.
Anyway, back on subject, its all about mindset and the survival mentality. There are plenty of good Officers your size or smaller that do just fine. You can too. If you can manage to put on some weight, great, if not, just deal with what God gave you.

TOO MANY of us don't work out or train because we're afraid to look Stupid or look Inept or look Weak. SO FUC&ING WHAT!!! YOU HAVE TO START SOMEWHERE/SOMETIME!!!
I'd much more respect the scrawny guy who is going to the gym (even though he may not be lifting that much weight) and trying to improve himself than the one that doesn't do anything at all. I'd much more respect the fat female who is out there working up a sweat in her sweats and running shoes (even though she may not be going that fast or far) than the one who doesn't do anything at all. I'd much more respect the novice guy who constantly shows up for DT training (even though he never "wins") than the one who doesn't do anything at all.
For all you guys who have that COMPLEX, GET THE FUC& OVER IT!!! You will never take that first step until you fuc&ing GROW A SPINE!

Size doesn't matter, being in shape DOES matter. You need endurance, strength, athleticism, and smarts when using force. If you are just big, and don't have any of those you won't last in a fight.

Why do you say no one understands your situation? Did you read my first post? I work very hard to maintain the size I have, even though I'm nearly 40 now. I will lean out very quickly if I dont hit the weights hard and regularly.
You say you eat a lot, but are you eating quality food? I'm guessing that your diet could be tweaked easily to allow you to put size on, but again... you'll need to work hard to ensure that the extra calories get added as muscle rather than flab.
As far as not knowing what to do with weights, come on man... there are tons of books, magazines, and websites devoted to this. I also said on my first post that I bought all the magazines in order to learn what I was doing in the weight room.
God isn't going to miracle you bigger. You're going to have to take some action, and do the (hard) work to make it happen.

[snickers and awaits Delta to take the bait] :D
Seriously though.
Samuel, Amen brother. To the fat and scrawny. Get over it. Not everyone is looking at your in the gym anyway. I've spotted guys that struggled to rep 135 in bench. It didn't even cross my mind how silly they looked. AT LEAST THEY ARE TRYING.
I've got more respect for the toothpicks and whale-A's that are working on getting into shape, than those people that sit in their basement's moping around and eating ding dongs and drinking blended up twinky juice.
Stop being so damn insecure.
Which leads me to a huge contrats to Grizzly. Thats one hell of an accomplishment.
haha. I love how people who don't understand something, find it so easy to say "stop being this way, or that way!" It's like a curse of sorts. You probably didn't have a female neighbor who used to point out your legs and say "eww! they are all vainy." You probably didn't play soccer for the YMCA to have some random kid at the park come up to you and look at you with a semi disgusted look and say "you're really skinny." I know I'm skinny and others do to, and that's the problem. I'm not as bad as I used to be. I don't think people look at me and go "Oh my god!" I'm just kinda skinny now, nothing real serious though. I don't wear shorts though. Do I sound like a depressed, insecure bastard? Well I am... :D
I understand it's just something I'm gonna have to get over. And I won't unless something changes, so I really want to get myself lifting weights and just doing something.

But I've sorta learned to use verbal skills to diffuse situations.
Yesterday my photographer was videotaping people coming out of a gambling hall that just got busted.
This korean lady came out and saw us and demanded we stop shooting.

I was able to calm her down by talking and using my hand gestures.

I really don't want my brother to surpass me. I'm 18, he's 16. He's getting close to me, but I've still got him beat. I pretty much stop growing, height-wise at his age though.

You have the option of walking away, which is a luxury we don't have.
But many times we are put in stupid situations by our bosses...and we have no weapons to defend ourselves.
For e.g. we're often sent to a suspect's house to ask them about a crime they allegedly committed.
Once I had to go to this guy's house who had killed a woman in a head-on collision. His battered truck was in the driveway and I had orders from my bosses to go up to his front door and knock.
Well, the guy wasn't home but his huge son was and he was not happy to see me.
He came out and started walking toward me but I used my demeanor and body language and words to diffuse things. He eventually talked to me briefly and went back inside.

I'm not comfortable at this point going to a gym. I'm too weak and scrawny. I know everyone's gonna give me a bunch of reasons to go and tell me it's not that bad, but I won't go now, so don't bother.
If that's your mental image of yourself, you'll never get hired. A police officer needs to project and exude confidence... if you aren't sure of yourself, others can pick up on that very easily, and the bad guys will want to give you a go".
Have you ever looked inside a gym? There are lots of fat people. There are old people. Most of the people you see aren't going to be cut, tanned Greek gods... people like that don't need to go to the gym! :)
Oh, and exercise equipment is a huge racket, because the vast majority is used a little bit and then left to collect dust. If you really think that you couldn't bear to go to the gym, at least do yourself a favor and look for "second hand" equipment... most of it will be like new and a fraction of the price.

You gotta get over that attitude.
Every ripped guy you see at the gym started out way-back-when as just a "regular guy" - not sure how to lift, not sure what to lift, not sure how to go about meeting whatever goals he had, not sure where to start.......
The difference is that THEY took the time to learn. They weren't afraid to try. Right now I don't hear that in you - and until you get over your confidence issues and image issues, things won't change. And in another year you can write back again - a year older and still "too weak and scrawny".
Things don't change by themselves - you have to make them change.

For those of ya'll that dont frequent the gym because you're afraid people will think you're silly looking or what ever...to hell with what they think. I'm 39yrs old, 5'7 175lbs, and I lift weights 5 days a week, because I'd like to look a bit more imposing when/if I ever do become a LEO. I'm blessed to be able to lift as much as I can. I sometimes wonder if the bigger muscleheads look at me and wonder "what the hell is that old fart doing here". Then I tell myself to concentrate on MY thing, and let them do theirs. I also share the opinion of others on this thread. When I see a smaller (or larger) person trying to improve themselves, they get much respect from me. Much more than someone who doesn't. It also helps to have a buddy work out with you. I've always had better work outs when I had a partner to bounce ideas off of. Good luck.

When I was young I was 5 10 and weighed about 150. I'm about 5 11 and weighed about 180 most of the time, working out. You have to have a little weight so you do get thrown around but more important a very positive attitude, when talking with people that you mean what you say. I always for the most part treated people like they treated me. If you want to solve the situation kind of nice fine. If you wanted to play ***hole I'd be happy to take that rought also. I had a degree in that. :D
