My friend's 18 yr-old son (no, its really not me, i dont have any kids) was arrested for having a loaded, unregistered gun in his car, along with other more minor charges such as underage drinking.
His lawyer got him a plea bargain, which includes having the felonly on his record for 10 years, after which time my friend said they can pay to have it removed from his permanent record. I dont know anything about how any of it works...
But, she's under the impression now that he wont be able to get a job for 10 years because of the record. He's in Art College now. Anyone know what the chances are of getting a decent job with a felony on your record?

he can still get a job, but a lot of companies do have that as a DQ, or atleast on the aplication. it also matters if the convictions were violent or money related as far as jobs go. but then again look at most of the corperate presidents. :)

I thought alot of it had to do with whether the offense was violent, or any type of stealing.
In my mind, he's a POS, and wants to be able to stay home and live off of his family for the next 10 years. Draw pictures during the school year, and lay around all summer. SO, he wants them to believe that now he cant get a job. He has a year probation, and i told her they will probably want him to get a job. But maybe not, since he's in college.

he can get one now, it may not be glamerous, but crap, i m suprised that a job is not part of his probation, no matter what. how else can he pay his fines.
I don't think the felony question even comes up in interviews to hire someone to MOW LAWNs
There are jobs out there....and depending on what he does now on out will decide if he can break out of the low end ones I would guess.

I think any state jobs or law enforcement related jobs would probably be out of the question... but he could probably get a job in a private sector... what might pose more of a problem is finding a job with an ART degree  .

Has a felony on his record, lives with mom, and goes to art school. The kid sounds like a real winner!! Yeah, art school, huge career opporitunity in such a demanding occupation!!?????

I knew quite a few career college students. Most of them fail miserably outside of the academic environment. But McJobs are available, his parents may have to start charging him rent to "encourage" him to get one though.

With a Felony on his record, he will not likely be able to keep any financial aid he may be getting. Now we are back to laborer jobs. His folks need to take away anything in the house that he enjoys and make him get out and work!!

Well, he has a student loan to go to college. I wonder if they'll find out...i hope so. He needs his eyes opened. Altho it really doesnt matter...i think mom and dad will continue to do for him. His mom is one of my closests friends, and i hate to see her going thru all this. But she and her husband will not punish him the way they should (too late now, i guess...hes 18), and hes not learning about the REAL world.

Well, he has a student loan to go to college.
When I got my student loans I was only asked about drug convictions not other felonies.
