hey there guys/gals.... I'm currently in Minnesota going through our POST program here. It is no secret that MN is a very hard state to get a job in because of all the graduates here and the influx of people transfering into the larger agencies. So now I am looking into Moving down to the Phoenix area with the hopes of getting a job. I have a 4-year degree in Criminal Justice, POST Certified (yeah i know MN POST, but it doesn't hurt), First responder and soon to be EMT certified, and I was wondering what some of you thought my chances would be of getting a job in the Phoenix area. I am intrested in most cities surrounding Phoenix too, such as Mesa, Chandler, Glendale, Tempe and that. Just thought I would throw that out there for someone to read and respond to. Thanks!

If you can pass the poly...

You would be hired in a Second..........

If I remeber scottsdale and maybe a couple others require a 2 year degree... With you having a 4 year.. You will just stand out!

Good luck... ~~!!

I don't think that the poly graph should be that big of a deal. I am not to worried about it. I really have nothing to admit to. So hopefully things do work out. I am going down to test with Phoenix the second weekend in September. But thank you for the reply.

It seems like most of the dept. are hiring, and with your degree you should have a good chance. I'm trying to lateral over to Mesa from Colorado, and go through their waiver process. You may want to call around and see if you can qualify for the waiver process. From everyone I have talked to most of the departments are good to work for. The only problem you may have is housing, if you plan on buying a home. High population boom in the last year. It's very hard to find something for a decent price. I just bought a new home in the Queen Creek area (just Southeast of Mesa), should be done by January. They now have a nine-month waiting list. Good luck

Mgrif,

Tell us about Peoria and what it has to offer. My wife are looking to move to that area and I'm trying to figure out what agency is best/easiest for lateral transfers.

Well I would say take a look at the website. Right now Peoria is Offering a $5,000 for laterals and a $3,000 for new guys. If your a Police Officer from out of state you can take the challenge test and if you pass you can get your AZPOST certification. Peoria is really pushing for laterals. I would say more than any other agency around here. They have over 220 staff. over 170 of them are sworn. They just build a new 97,000 squire foot public safety building. They have one substation in north Peoria and looking to build another up there. The city is the fourth largest in Arizona with regards incorperated land. Peoria is the 9th largest in regards to population. Its a great suburb to live in. Not too big or busy but yet still one of the largest growing cities in the valley. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I was looking at Peoria too as well as some of the other cities. I liked the look of Glendale too. I just like that whole area down there. I think because it isn't Minnesota and it is completely different. but, I got a hold of a recruiter and I am set to go down there the second weekend of September to test. So until then, I am keeping my fingers crossed. And while I am there I am going to go around and talk with some of the other agencies and see what they say and what they have to offer. :)

Glendale is nearly land locked by surrounding cities. Its a good size department but there will be no growth. They are fighting to expand to the southwest. They are locked in to the north.
