Information for hired Montana police officers
When an agency hires an officer who is required to attend the Law Enforcement Academy Basic Course, that agency must submit the Basic Law Enforcement Course Application Form within 10 days of the hire date. According to statute, new hires must attend the Law Enforcement Academy Basic Course within one year of their dates of hire (or within an extension period granted by the Peace Officers Standards and Training office). The date of hire may dictate which basic session new officers attend.
After the Academy receives the application, it:
assigns the student to attend a particular basic session
notifies the agency of the basic session number and dates
Contact the Program Managers for the Law Enforcement Academy Basic Program at (406) 444-9950 or the Bureau Chief of the Montana Law Enforcement Academy at (406) 444-9957 with any questions.
Forty-five days prior to the basic session, the applicant must pass a physical fitness pre-test by achieving a 30th-percentile performance level. The Academy notifies the agency of the dates, times and locations of the pre-tests. To participate in the pre-testing process, students must submit a Basic Law Enforcement Course Medical Release Form to the test proctor at the testing site. Please contact the Western Regional Training Coordinator at (406) 544-2681 or the Eastern Regional Training Coordinator at (406) 670-2090 with any questions.
Should an applicant fail the pre-test, re-testing may be allowed, depending on the timing of the basic session and the availability of slots for that particular session.
Students who successfully complete the pre-testing process are given an informational packet at the testing site. This packet gives the student the information needed to prepare for the basic session. Contact the Program Managers for the Law Enforcement Academy Basic Program at (406) 444-9950 with any questions.
Information for individuals who desire to become a Montana police officer
Individuals with the desire to become a Montana peace officer can apply to attend the Law Enforcement Academy's 12-week, 480-hour Basic Course. These individuals must apply, pass the background investigation and an interview, and pay the appropriate tuition costs. Attending and completing the Law Enforcement Academy Basic Course does not guarantee a position with a law enforcement agency in Montana, but most students have a job even before they graduate from the course. For more information and current tuition costs, please call (406) 444-9950.
Information for individuals who have been a police officer in another state
After being hired by a law enforcement agency in Montana, officers with out-of-state basic training may seek Montana Peace Officer Certification by completing the five parts of the equivalency process:

Joining the Patrol
How to Apply
If you are considering a law enforcement career:
Check that you meet the Patrol's requirements.
Contact the Patrol recruitment office at (877) 8-PATROL toll free, (406) 444-3825 or 444-4691, or mhp@mt.gov for more information and ask to be placed on the recruitment mailing list. This list is valid only for the period prior to the next scheduled recruit academy.
Check the schedule for the date of the next recruit academy, and the dates and locations of the required written and physical fitness tests.
Take the written test. Applicants must get a minimum cumulative passing score on the Montana Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) test. The test includes three sections: a multi-jurisdictional test, reading skills test and writing skills test. Failure to meet the minimum cumulative passing score eliminates an applicant from the selection process.
Take the physical fitness tests, which are designed to measure the strength, flexibility and endurance law enforcement officers need to perform the essential functions of their positions. Applicants must meet the Patrol's physical fitness standards by successfully passing each of four physical fitness tests at the 30th-percentile performance level. Failure to meet a minimum of 30th-percentile performance level at any station eliminates an applicant from physical fitness testing and from the selection process.
Complete a state employment application. Check the schedule for the date applications are due. The Patrol posts current job announcements under Montana Job Listings only during active recruitment.
Make sure you:
review your application package to check that it includes any additional requirements and information
include a copy of your P.O.S.T. written and physical fitness test scores
Lateral Applicants: If you already have a Montana Basic P.O.S.T. certificate or are a graduate of the Montana Law Enforcement Basic Academy, complete a state employment application and include a copy of your certificate. You do not have to take the P.O.S.T. written test. Contact the Patrol recruitment office at (877) 8-PATROL toll free, (406) 444-3825 or 444-4691, or mhp@mt.gov for more information.
Any applicant who falsifies or withholds any pertinent information will be rejected as a recruit or dismissed if already employed by the Patrol.

To apply for an officer position with the Patrol, you must:
possess a high school diploma or GED
possess a valid driver's license from any state and have at least three years' driving experience
