Are slacks and a nice button up shirt, possibly a tie thrown in the mix, good enough for either of these? Or do I need to break out the suit?

All contacts with the police or sheriff dept, especially with the polygrapher or psychologis should be in a suit. If you want this job real bad, and I know you do, put on that suit. Sell yourself.. the other applicants will try to take your job away from you. You've went this far, don't lower your guard. Good luck.

You can never go wrong with a suit unless it is for the PT portion of your testing. Buy one good suit and several different shirts and ties. Bring an extra shirt and tie with you in your car to every interview. Nothing is as bad as spilling some coffee on your shirt right before an interview.

how about the oral board in a small down, does a suit mean that you are to over dress or would a nice button up shirt and slacks be ok?

Wear a suit, repeat, wear a suit.

Interesting, I've never worn a suit to an interview. I've been hired twice and been offere (but I turned down) 2 other jobs.

Depends on the departments I guess. Or possibly the region.

A suit is something you can not go wrong with for a job that you are going to be in public everyday and having to look professional as it is. There is no exact "code of dress" for an interview, etc, however, it is highly RECOMMENDED:)

PKAGEL hit the nail on the head. Buy a suit, get some different shirts, and a few ties to match. You absolutely can not go wrong in a suit. First impressions are everything. Better to be overdressed than underdressed. Good luck

You know, Maybe they would think it is fine but do you really want to risk it. What is it that you have against wearing a suit anyway? If you make detective you'll be in a suit every day.

A city PD of 40 officers in a city of 25K. And a County agency of nearly 500 in a county of almost 500K.

I'm not saying I don't recommend wearing a suit, just that I never have.

And, our detectives don't wear suits either. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen a detective from my Dept in a suit. :p

OK, now that we have moved beyond that, shop around. We have a place out here called 3 day suit brokers who are, surprisingly, only open friday-sunday. They are very cheap for awsome suits. Listen to talk radio, they are sure to have a commercial for something similar.

Dang OSU, you really need to change yourscreename to "my mama needs to dress me" instead of Osutrooper....!!!!!!!

Wear something plain...unless you feel since its spring you may want to shed some of your bright colors....wear the colors of OSU...that might get ya the job:)

Black can look nice but shows lint, go with a dark grey, single breasted suit. White shirt for your oral and maybe very light grey or blue for other interviews. For your ties, buy them at the same time as you buy your shirts and suit and let the guys at the store help you out. You'll want something with some red in it but not too much red. A few red stripes are nice. Bring your girlfriend along with you also and elicit her opinion and that of the merchant and you should be good to go. Do you have proper shoes. Buy a set of all black wing tips, good ones, you'll wear them again.

I would check with the recruiter about the dress code for Polygraph. When I was processing with my department they told me to dress business casual for the poly so that I would be comfortable. I wore Khaki's and a button down shirt with no tie. However, I would always suggest a suit for the other parts.

Due to being an out of state applicant and having my physical and psych exam both in the same day...and having to drive out into the 'burbs after my physical to get a respirator fit test...thus running rather late...I showed up for my psych interview in the same outfit I went for my physical in, which is to say, jeans and a t-shirt. In spite of that, I passed the psych exam with no problems, but I would recommend at least Dockers and a dress shirt if you have time.

The paperwork for my poly said to wear casual clothing (ie. slacks and a nice shirt). I wore a suit for my pysch just to be safe. Other guy there had on slacks and a shirt. It was very informal, so I'm sure either were safe for this particualr visit.

If they specify to wear business casual then wear business casual. If you don't it looks like you can't follow directions.
