View Full Version : Question About Montgomery County MD and DC Police Jobs

I was wondering if anyone in the MoCo or DC area could answer a few questions about getting on with various departments. Specifically:
I'm interested in the National Capital Police in MD, Transit Police, Airport Police or MPD. Does anyone know who hires the quickest (assuming all factors are equal)?
Secondly, what about OT? Realistically what can I expect with OT? I understand MPD has OT opportunities but what does that mean for a starting Officer? The fact remains the DC area is expensive and I need to make a reasonable income to pay my bills and give my family something to eat other than something I have to shoot or grow myself.
I don't have anything against MoCo PD or PG County but I just don't feel like going through the nutroll with a poly.
Appreciate any advice anyone can share.
Thanks in advance, Maroonberet.

Im in the MPD academy now...
My hiring process took right around 6 months. Some guys in my class had there whole process done in around 3 months, others as long as a year. I think it depends on 1. if you're from the area and 2. Who your BI is. Some seem to work faster than others.
As far as OT, I'm not sure how available it is, although im sure there is a good amount. However, MPD's OT compensation is a little screwy. You dont get OT pay after working 40hrs in a week. You get it after working 171 hours in a 28 day pay cycle. It's hard to explain.
There was a thread on here a few weeks ago talking about it.
You can PM me if you have any other questions.
edit: heres the link for the thread that mentioned MPD's OT...

US Capitol Police has as much OT as you want to do right now......I have heard their process is 6-9 months also but you may ask is there anything you can do to speed this process up if you pass the POST that is the first step. I fully intend to do this myself after I take the test June 18th. I would think if your from the area and have not lived and/or worked a ton of places that would help tremondously.
Their next recruit class is leaving towards the end of Sept. and they are short people to take. I was told they will be pulling some( not all) people from those who took the test in May and this one coming up in June( it's full already). Hopefully this shows that the process can be sped up for the right people and I'm sure the less running the BI guy has to do plays into this. The BI can hit all 3 places I have lived in 30min drive.
MPD,I have sent a application in and they say it takes 30days for that first response.I sent that May 12 and have not heard anything other then a postcard that says it was received and being reviewed and they would be in touch.

I belive Metro airports police have a poly.
They do not. Background for them last btwn 4-6 months then you have to wait for an academy spot.
MPD's POST test is June 18th( just received my info yesterday) But now I have to call and reschedule because me Capitol Police POST test is that same day.....
Oh well

Thanks to everyone for the replies so far. I was interested in the Metro Transit PD as one option. I must confess to being driven more by opportunity to get OT and speed in getting on than fear of the poly. I'm fairly certain I would pass but frankly I haven't seen any benefit to getting on a department with a poly or one without so my perspective is, why put another hurdle in the way?
Still would appreciate any information on MD Park Police as well.
Thanks again eveyone.

PG County PD are hiring right now like gangbusters. Not so sure on Monkey County, tho. FYI, Maryand Police Training Commission a few years back made it mandatory for the polygraph for all hires, even laterals. Sucks, but not much can be done about that.
As far as O/T goes, there won't be much til you get out of the academy and off of FTO.
You may want to look at Fort Detrick Dept of Army Police, US Naval Academy Police in Annapolis, Walter Reed Police, NIH Police, Aberdeen Proving Ground Police, or Naval Air Station Pax River Police. Detrick, where i work, will put you on the street almost right away if you are a prior LEO certified officer. We will probably start hiring in July..maybe.
Those are the options that I know of. And, US Cap Police are hiring, big time, so I hear.
Best of luck!

I wouldnt work at Walter Reed for all the money in the world. I spent 4 months in that hell hole of a facility and the police department is very mismanged. Detrick, I wouldnt want to deal with the monkeys when they get loose.. hahahaha.. Zebra..Iam sending you a pm wondering if several folks still work at your PMO.
