View Full Version : One more PT question...

So everyone seems to want to know about the 1.5 mile test and things of that nature for the academy. My question is, even if you can complete this 1.5 mile run in 12-14 min (whatever the requirements are), will you be able to survive the running regime in PT? Ive heard you run a lot in PT, much more that 1.5 miles at a time. My question is how far have you had to run during the academy (5-10 mi at a time?) and does being ready for the 1.5 mean you are ready for the academy runs?

oooooo good question...
Someone respond because I want to know the same thing.

I can't speak for all academies, but here we use it a guideline and starting point.
If you can do the mile and a half then they can start working with you on longer distances.
Since there are no standards in this state, you're evaluated and then expcted to improve throughout your training.
Reminds me of my first PT day after IST in boot camp. The drill instructor told us not to worry they'll work us up slow to longer distances.
1 1/2 miles first day,
2 miles second day,
3 miles third day,
5 miles fourth day,
Yeah that was slow.

I only know about 2 academies.. Ruh.. You're looking at 2 miles a day.
I would suggest since you're trying to get into KCMO.. to talk to some of the guys and do some ride alongs.
e-mail me.. Tkplays2@yahoo.com.. I can give your info to some of the KCMO guys if you seriously need some info on that academy.

Don't look at it in such a pessimistic way. Just accept everything and tell yourself your going to do anything, even if it's a 5 mile run. You gotta want it, if you have that attitude you will succeed!

LOL.. in one of my tests, the sgt. drove around the field while we were running with his sirens on yelling at us through the bullhorn :D
At the academy where I teach we use the 1.5 mile run as a test every six weeks. But, that being said, the answer to your initial question is no. Cadets are told at orientation that if they can run 3 miles when they get here they most likely will have no problems and we will build on that. On average we do a 2 mile warm up run before we start PT. Usually our longest run is 5 miles and thats only because of time constrants. We tell people at the PT entrance testing that the test is not an indicator of the PT program at the academy. So.......don't let 1.5 miles be your best distance. Build on that.

Actually, I am trying to get into either St Louis County and Municpal Police Academy or Eastern Missouri Police Academy (focus on Eastern with County being the back up plan)
However, I'm sure since they are all 3 in the same state and end up with the same certs or just about, the training would be around the same.(I assume... considering the relation in ciriculum between EMPA and STLCMPA)
If you have yahoo instant messenger let me know. Ill add you to my list and send you a message.
I am not really all to worried...I think even in my shape right now I could push myself through the PAT. That situation is a whole lot different than working out away from other people and no real other motivating factors (such as stress). Then I have around 3mos to get into better shape for the academy (Don't get me wrong, I am still working on myself before the PAT).
Any help will still be GREATLY appreciated.

we had a former marine (who was a current police cheif) teaching our PT. we ran way more than the 1.5 miles at a time. the one thing we did a lot of was double time cadence. it takes your mind off of how long you were running and makes you breathe properly. all the military guys on here know!!!!
just don't think about it. when i did my 1.5 mile, i did it in around 11 minutes and it was a steady jog. i was so pumped i got runners high from laps 2-5 and then cruised on the final lap.

Hey if a big fat guy like me, 6' 220 can run {at least used to} 3 miles after moving furniture all day you young ones can. In Pittsburgh the biilt up to abut 20 minutes at a time. The State standards are different now I think it harder Every place is different. I got a brochure in the mail for Arizonas academy and it said they do between 3-6 miles a few times a week building up to a NINE mile MOUNTAIN run for graduation. I stayed in PA needless to say...

I plan on attending the Las Vegas PD academy in June. The initial state standard to get hired on is 1.5 mile run in 17.17 min. for when I applied, actually now it's 1 mile at a faster pace. The information I recieved about the academies running is starting at 1.5 miles at a 10 min pace 4 days a week. Each week we increase by about 10% up to 5-6 miles at the end of the 6 month academy. One thing that hasn't been mentioned here is the other factors you might want to consider. Like in my case, the running takes place in an area that is very hilly and at a higher altitude (3000+ feet). I come from 50 foot elevation. Like I found today taking the final agility test, it can be incredibly hot, 90+ at 8 o'clock in the morning. The heat kicks your ***.

I am going to try for metro PD, or any dept when I get out there in the fall. I was curious to see how I will do at a higher elevation in the heat. Of coarse when its 95* and 88% humidity like it is here, 105+ dry heat never felt so good. If I could spend 8 hrs in a tux in late july in Vegas without major discomfort it wont be all that bad.
Of coarse ill take the toughest pt any nevada dept can toss over crawling through an attic in august getting covered with fibrglass insulation running ac equipment any day. Which is why I would look forward to the acadamy, its a vacation compared to what i do everyday.

Hey...looks like you've gotten a lot of replies...but I'll throw in my 2 cents. Don't know about WI academies, but I'm in the Suburban academy in Illinois, and I had the same worries prior to going. With 4 weeks left, the longest cadence run we've gone on has been about 3 miles. And they work you up to it. If I can do it, anybody can! If you can pass the 1.5 in your required time, you should be fine. Not everybody there will be marathon runners. Good luck.

Thanks a lot, and thanks to everyone else too, for your replies. This helps to put things into perspective and wasn't meant to sound whinny or negative. I need all the help I can get (need to lose weight), but I am slowly starting to get in to the running routine so hopefully that will pay off.
Thanks again.
