Ok, I love cigars and I mean LOVE. However, I am not sure if this could be a DQ or not. Since it is not possible to be addicted to cigars and they are not NEARLY as bad for you as other kinds of tobacco, could this affect me?
Is this something they ask you about on the polygraph?

Another question...

If you do not list all your employers (I have had allot) will the find out? If so, how? I don't know if I can remember them all.

Thanks again.

Actually several agencies have adoped a "no tobacco policy" and most agencies at least ask if you are a smoker during the application process. I tend to agree with them, after all it is proven that smokers are generally unhealthier than non-smokers..they take more sick days and use up more health insurance monies. Some may disagree with me, but I've seen the studies (I know, studies can be flawed). I don't have a problem with smokers, I DO have a problem with officers smoking in patrol cars or chain smoking in public. In my opinion it is a bad image for a police department. Of course my Chief smokes cigars all the time, so I don't see him cracking down on the practice around here.

As far as it being a habit, I don't quite place it in the same league as narcotics or marijuana, and I'm sure 99% of police and sheriff departments see it the same way.

I have never been asked. Just apply at agencies that don't have a No Smoking policy. If they ask say honestly that you enjoy a good cigar but don't smoke cig's.

Yeah Alot of departments are going to a blanket no tobacco policy, its an insurance policy thing. Damn politicians. They make you sign a contract agreeing to NEVER smoke anything. Fairfax County Virginia was one that I was going to but the cost of living killed it. I love my cigars but I dont smoke as much. My old place it was not a problem smoking a few 'Backwoods' during the shift but any real smokes and they would have to have been killed going into a place. New place doesnt allow smoking in the patrol cars. My new house has a nice deck in the back so Ill be getting my smokes back to life and enjoying a few of my illicit island cigars that I have left. Dont tell anyone.sssshhhhh... ;)
As far as employers you cant really be expected to remember them ALL but make the best shot you can. I put a ice cream place I worked for for a day and a half during high school. It helps to be as honest as you can be.

One way to find out all the jobs you have worked is to go down to the social security office and pull your file. On it is listed every place that paid SS on you. Yes, they probably will pull this file so best to be honest. It won't really hurt you if you had a lot of jobs when you were a kid or in college working summer jobs but if you are an adult and switch jobs every 6 months then it doesn't look good.
