I was wondering how far they go back for a background investigation. I'm curently working for the Erie County Sheriff's Dept. I'm wondering now after reading some of the threads, It looks like the BI's are more detailed than the one I had. Do they DQ you for incidents that happened in school, no records, just typicall school stuff? This is the only thing making me nervous, I don't remember alot of stuff from when I was in school. Can someone give me examples of stuff they ask for questions or what they will need, material wise. thanks

If you ever smarted off to a teacher it's an automatic DQ with most dept's. Also if you picked on nerdy kids, that could be a problem.

What the hell did you do that you are so worried about? Sounds to me like you did something that you didn't disclose on your current dept's application that you are worried will come up in future BI's. Now that could be a problem that may affect you current career. Good luck.

They usually will ask you to go back at least 10 years....jobs., places youve lived, prior employment. Unless your looking into the FBI i doubt they will go back to your kindergarten teacher and ask her how you fingerpainted.

Local PD's and SO's usually only care from high school on....and most agencies dont care if you got suspended in 6th grade for smoking on school property or petty stuff like that. They care about big things...grand theft auto., domestic battery, DUI...etc.

I have a little misdemeanor charge 6 years ago. My current dept. only made me explain my situation. But I'm applying at other agencies, and from what I read in some other posts, it looks like other depts. are a little more detailed. Only on incident since high school. Nothing too serious.
