VegasMetro,
Just received a postcard in the mail today advising me to report for the written exam on 5/24. The physical fitness test will be the very next day, followed by the oral board on 5/27. Do you have any advice or suggestions for this process?

The physical is is pass or fail, no hidden secrets. On the oral board, wear a suit, (yep, some folks show up in jeans and a t-shirt...), be friendly. They will ask you simple questions regarding your integrity, ie; your partner steals a candy bar from a store...what would you do..... ( hint, tell your supervisor...not say "hey where's mine...." These are new hire questions. Go to this page here, read this stuff, try to remeber our Dept Values if you can..it will get you some bonus points if you can mention them in one of your answers...

http://www.lvmpd.com/About_LVMPD/index.html

example for you...
Questions: You and your partner are on a burglary call of a local store, the store is empty and you are awaiting the owner to arrive to see if anything is missing. YOU see your partner remove a candybar from a shelve and place it in his pocket. Your partner never tells the store owner and walks out of the store without paying for it, what will you do?

Answer: I would inform my supervisor of the incident. It is a direct violation of the departments value: Integrity........ blah blah blah.... I know it's easy to sit hear and think of answers, so just be calm and be honest.

question: would you be willing to take another persons life in the line of duty if needed? ( ie; holding a gun/knife on your partner?)

Anyhow, I'm sure you will do fine. The questions are not hard, they are just to see if you have the qualities our agency is looking for...

Good Luck.... :)

Our department is full of prior police officers as well. I was also a cop in another state before I moved here for the job. You have to see what they offer to beleive it. The BS here is minimal, although we still have some, but the pay and benefits are awesome. The biggest problem you will encounter is that our department is so young. It is not uncommon to have a FTO who is 23-25 years old and has 3 years on the Department telling you about police work. Remember, it's a game, play it while your in training, then your done.

I'd be interested, but the girlfriend/future wife doesn't want to live there. :(

Thanks for the information concerning the hiring process. What areas would you recommend for building a home? I have to elementary school aged kids. Is there a certain radius that officers are required to stay within for employment with your dept?

Most cops live in the Noethwest part of the city, or the Southeast. The academy is here:

If you are looking for an apartment first, I would recommend the NW part of the valley. It will make life easy on you during the 20 week academy. You have to reside in Clark County. We have cops all over the county. I think the county covers 990 square miles. It's unique. I live in the NW part of the valley. I like it. We have schools all over the place, If you stay toward the outskirts of the valley you will get better school, or atleast better school kids. Summerlin is a nice place, it is a family community. The down fall is the price is about 20-40K more for a home just for living there.

I was under the impression that the academy was a live-in academy. Also, how much time has to be spent in patrol before opting for specialized units?

Our academy is not a live in one. You commute each day. I think they are on 4-10 hour shifts, I know they were a few years back when they were running 2 at the same time. You have 20 or so weeks in the academy, then 20 weeks of the FTO program. You can transfer to a specialized unit within 2-5 years. It depends on the unit. I think our Gang unit requires 2 years on, Narcs is 5, Swat 3 or 4, they are all different. You get 8% more in pay for working in a specialized unit, or if your an FTO. We also pay 4% more if you work swings or graves.. yep, 12% extra a paycheck. (Not to mention a take home ride for call-outs...if your work in that type of assignment.....

Regarding housing. What the situation with housing, is the area building up, is room for housing/building running out. What are the prices for, say, a medium sized 2-3 bedroom one bath attached garage residence. How are property taxes, is there any help with relocation from the department?

Vegas is still growing like a weed on steroids. Last year, folks from California were selling their homes for big money and moving to Vegas. They bought houses here for cash, and then bought some rentals. It jacked up the median price of a home here. I just moved last summer. The house I bought was 1 year old. It sold for $ 260,000 new. I paid 500 K for it a year after it was built. Yea, I said it too.....are you shi&*&% me...... The property tax issue is still up for grabs, obviously lots of folks made a fast easy buck with the real estate, but the property taxes will be up as well. I am waiting for the other shoe to drop. My house is only 3000 square ft. It is nice, but it is a regular family home, nothing elaborate. Anyhow, the housing market here stinks. When I moved here in 93 it was a great place to get affordable housing...

Just curious, what's with the large increase? Is it just to match the growth of the city or is there a sudden mass exidous of officers? Also, is a ride-along program available for applicants or civvies? I'm overseas right now but I'd be interested in applying when I get back in August.
