I am getting ready to apply to several police departments, however I feel that I also need a backup plan. There are a few corrections officer and dispatcher positions open in my area. Which one (corrections or dispatcher) would give me a better foot in the door to law enforcement? Also, If I were to take a job as a dispatcher or CO, how long should I plan on staying before I start applying for LEO jobs? Finally, what are the more stressful aspects of both jobs?

If you can't get the cop job, take the CO job and do a couple years and apply for the cop job again. Dispatcher is ok but as a CO you'll get to see a lot more and better prepare yourself for the outside.

Go for the C.O. You'll learn how to deal with people and their problems face to face. I've met very few GOOD C.O.s that didn't become good cops, if and when they made the change.

Maybe you should try working for a smaller PD or SO if you cant get the job you want. good luck..

Thanks guys. So is it even worth applying for dispatcher positions?

Both are good positions that offer their own aspects of the job and would look good on an application. It depends on what you want to do. If you want to be an LEO, I'd agree with the guy who said to apply so a smaller agency.

Being a dispatcher isn't all bad from a L.E. perspective. You learn how to deal with a great deal of pressure, and while you're not directly dealing with the problem, you do have to effectively deal with the caller who is usually in a near panic state. Either is a good career in and of themselves, as well as a stepping stone into Police Work. I know a lot of people that went into both areas with the intention of becoming a cop, and decided to stay as a C.O. or Dispatcher.

how are c.o.'s that work for that state classified ?
are they under the unbrella law enforcement officer's ?
some state''s they are like civillians.....
for experience dealing with bad guys 100% is better than
being cooped up in office all day.
