Information for individuals who desire to become a Montana police officer

Individuals with the desire to become a Montana peace officer can apply to attend the Law Enforcement Academy's 12-week, 480-hour Basic Course. These individuals must apply, pass the background investigation and an interview, and pay the appropriate tuition costs. Attending and completing the Law Enforcement Academy Basic Course does not guarantee a position with a law enforcement agency in Montana, but most students have a job even before they graduate from the course. Information for individuals who have been a police officer in another state

After being hired by a law enforcement agency in Montana, officers with out-of-state basic training may seek Montana Peace Officer Certification by completing the five parts of the equivalency process:

To become a peace officer in Montana most agencies require you are 18 and have a high school diploma at a minimum. Some larger agencies look for people 21 and over and who have at least an associate
