I've wanted to do this since I was 3, man. Like I told my soon-to-be Captain, I honestly hope that, in ten years, I am still as excited to get up and go to work as I am to get on right now. He's known my since I was a concept, so to speak. He looked me in the eyes, gave me a big smile and said, "Oh, I know you well enough, I can assure you you will."

It's a great job and if you are just beginning you should have 110% interest and motivation. That should last at least ten years before some of the problems start to get to you. Then it is just a matter of not getting frustrated and/or upset and keeping a positive outlook and you will enjoy it most of the time right up until you retire. :) ;)

They've had people drop out of the academy before because of the heat and they don't want that to get the best of me. The Chief is always excited to see me when I go in to see how things are going. I go up about once a week to just chat with one of the Sgts (he's always been like my big brother) and see where I stand. Plus if they have any questions for me, I can answer them while I'm up there. I'm beginning to think they're going to want me on CID. Both my grandfather and my uncle were 20 year vets of this PD and both were in CID for over 10 years. My grandfather for 11 and my uncle for 15 when they retired. Now my uncle is an instructor at the academy that, coincidentally, I'll have to go to. That means I'm going to get hell while I'm out there. LOL It's going to be fun, though. I guess I was kinda raised to be an officer, in a way.

Only two or three LETAs in the state that are like that. The two or so larger cities in the state have their own academies. Young guys in those, that's for sure.

Yeah, there's actually a decent chance I'll be the youngest in my academy class. I have given consideration to teaching at the academy after retirement from the PD. Depends on if I want to retire at 20 or 30 years, though.
