Sportscaster Chuck Thompson died yesterday. While he had been in poor health in recent years it still a truly sad day for Baltimore sports fans.

Thompson was the longtime voice of both the Orioles and the Colts. While not a fulltime play by play man for years, he did still make appearances on WBAL radio. Everybody here has great memories of listening to him on the radio. His signature line was one everybody in this board can appreciate, "Ain't the beer cold".

WBAL did a nice tribute to him on their website. You can listen to samples of his play by play.

Rest well Mr. Thompson.

I remember when legendary Boston Celtics announcer Johnny Most died. It felt like I had lost an old friend. I don't even really like basketball, but I used to listen to Johnny call the games, just for entertainment.

I'm that way with Johnny Holliday who does the Terps basketball games. Not really into the games, but enjoy listening to Holiday.

Baltimore has been extremely blessed with good play by play over the years. John Miller and Joe Angel were on after Thompson. Miller went on to ESPN and Angel went to Florida and is now back with Jim Hunter who is also great. Angel can make a blowout entertaining. Vince Bagli who now does sports for WBAL TV was no slouch as a play by play man either.

None however will touch Chuck Thompson. He did baseball and football equally well, had a great voice and kept you in the game.
