This is a pretty good web site for info on the death penalty!
PS - Courier New is a larger than normal font that can be used on your paper and is accepted through the APA writing guidelines. This way if you can't quite reach 10 pages, the font should stretch you that far!! :D

Since I am from the state that executes the most death row inmates, I should be able to give you some help. What type of information are you looking for? do you want stats? Just be more descriptive about the type of help you need

All my professors in graduate school knew that trick, and while we had to submit all our papers in the APA format, it was also specified to use Times New Roman font, size 12, only. :o
To be honest, I always had a problem staying under the maximum page limit for a paper. I usually had so much to say about the subject, that I had to do some trimming at the end to get under the page maximum. Hard to believe, I know.

I went from that problem to the opposite. I got better at writing longer papers, and looked at fewer issues with more focus. Then I got more efficient with more brevity.
What this did was cause me to write papers that were thorough and really good, but too short. I guess I could just add a viewpoint or issue, but it always felt like rework. There were only a few times when the prof was strict on the low end for an otherwise high quality paper.

Some professors cared and others did not - in all of my major classes, or whenever I could pick my own subject, then I would fly past the page limit, but when a professor wanted me to do ten pages on why Farm Fresh Chickens are NOT really farm fresh, then I admit, I used the font! :D

(shudders) god I hate APA format. All through Junior high and High school they teach you MNSP format(or something like it) and then you go to college and the professors want APA on everything. It's like an additional workload to learn APA format around my school.
The long papers don't bother me if it's a subject I can at least FEIGN interest in. I mean, for example, I had to write a 15 page paper on the
"connection between modern consumerism with post world war two nazism and post world war two communism."
BORING. I squeezed it out but found myself reiterating ideas from the begining. The death penalty is easy to write about it you get to choose but I found analytical papers are a bit more frusterating...especially trying to find facts to analyze an idea you don't agree with

I had just finished a grueling course in graduate school called "Foundations of Criminal Justice Scholarship" that involved a ****load of writing, and also knowing the APA format, inside & out.
The next course I had, there were a lot of people from my Foundations class with me. The professor started to mention that she wanted all papers in Turabian format, when we went berserk. Since there were a lot of cops in the class, she must have realized that she faced an armed revolt, and let us do the papers in APA format. :D

It's a style of writing perfected by some busybody named Kate Turabian. Like people in graduate school have nothing better to do than learn multiple writing formats.

This talk of writing formats is interesting. I'm a Junior at a fully accredited and acclaimed public university and I've never had to use them. Weird.
What exactly is the topic?
Do you need to state why death penalty is a deterrent force in criminal justice....or proove that death penalty is indeed lowering crime rates? Pro death penalty is pretty broad and you could write way more than 10 pages.
Start brain storming .....basically sit in a quiet room....write the words death penalty on a sheet of paper and then follow with words you think of...PRO...deterrence theory......procedural justice....etc.....take it from there.
Death penalty and why people obey the law.......Death Penalty in America and evolution of methods of punishment pop into my head when I think about your topic..I could go on, but wont.
Is this on a Criminal Justice angle? If so, you want to avoid any Sociological references completely unless you are doing a comparison project.
Using the death penalty as a deterrent of crime is a pretty broad topic. Is the paper on pro death penalty as a crime deterrant or pro D.P. as an extermination technique......just as way to get rid of the pigs that make our lives hell? Be specific...narrow down this pro death penalty idea to make it easier to write what you need to write. It will be tempting to write your own personal view, but APA does not allow that since you are not a published scholar ...or whatever they call them.
PM with questions...I love doing stuff like this and have some books at home that list great references you could look for at your library.......plus some names of authors to avoid, theories to not waste your time on (like any Marx info...skip it)
BTW, I hate APA, as well.

CONGRATS!!!! Finished my BA last April! One of the happiest moments in my life - I worked full-time and went to school full-time - I was glad I still knew my name when I was done! :D Then because I am such a glutton for punishment I joined the Police Academy, and I have 3 months left to go - I swear sometimes I confuse myself  :D

If you go on to graduate work, you'll become very familiar with at least one format. For whatever reason, a lot of undergraduate programs choose to not have students follow a standardized format when writing papers.
Welpe....check out The Publication Manual for the American Psychological Association to get a feel for it. The reference section of any college library will have it.

I have to do a paper on the death penalty on how it is good and not inhumane the paper has to be like I am presenting it in court like opening and closing arguments. I have to try to convince the so called jury not to get rid of it all together.

OHHHH.. o.k. So it has nothing to do with a defendant, just why we need to enforce the death penalty...Gotcha...oh, there are loads of references out there and you will write and write and write.....you surely need a darn good outline to keep you focused!
I looked in my Social Psychology book and an old Criminology book.....loads of references for you, if you want them. You should not have a problem finding anything to help you out. Like I said..steer away from the Sociology angle unless you want to use any of it in the thesis and then discuss that it is inconsistant and plain wrong in the body of the paper and thus prove it in the conclusion.
12 Angry men is a great book , if you have never read it. Probably cant be used as a reference, but surely help you get a grip of the lingo and court dialogue. You can find that at any library. I had an English comp teacher in high school who made us read the book, watch the movie.....and then write and act out our own debate in groups using numerous topics we could choose from. It was pretty fun.
Good luck..pm me with any questions... remember, I love this kind of stuff!
