We've all had it around here since last week and a couple of schools shut down because so many kids were sick.

I haven't had the flu since I was a little kid...knock on wood! I remember it sucked and being able to stay home from school didn't make up for being sick. I don't get the flu, I get strep or pharyngitis...every year just about, so if you want to know about that I could tell ya. ;)

I used to have flu two years ago and it was worse, I had like 2 to 3 weeks of flu. I couldn't stand it since it drove me crazy. Pains get worse around your body.

I haven't had the flu since I was a little kid; one of the many times I knew how much my mom loved me. She stayed home with me and cooled my fever with warm washcloths, made me awesome Caldo (soup ) ...her chicken soup is so good ..oh and she bought me a my first Nancy Drew book that I read in 2 days (had to rest, afterall).

Amazing that I have decent memories of a time when I was horribly ill...wow..that was 30 years ago and I still remember how crummy I felt....AWWWW, the shakes, the goosebumps..the sweating......the fever..the coughing, the snot that burned coming out of my nose....AAAAAAGH!
I am so glad I have never had it again....damn mutating flu virus, it has tried to get me every year, but I am pretty good about washing my hands and staying away from ill people...vitamins...juice.....I should get a flu shot every year, but dont.

Ahhhhh, Styx, that reminds me of our dear mothers who nurse us. Nancy Drew??? Coool. :D

As for now, kids have to go to school here in Southern California despite illnesses. I disagree with the rules so I make sure my kids stay home and then once they are WELL enough to go back to school. They got the flu/cold from children who are still attending schools. All due to fav of "No Child Left Behind" but that policy is for kids who are ditching schools or the parents chose to let them stay home and care for siblings while parents work. I don't think they understand what that policy is for. But my kids did pretty good job make up all their missed homeworks and turned in the next day.

Been there done that. I got home the Sat. before Thanksgiving and went to sleep around 0800. I got up around 1030 shaking, sweating, freezing shivering. Major body aches and headaches. called in sick and tols wifey to get me jello.. I uh prayed to the porcelin {sp.} g-d for a while and went back to sleep. Woke up every hour and either sweating or shivering. That MAJOR stuff lasted about 2 days until monday. I begant o eat some turkey and jello. Called my doctor monday morning and was told they are busy they dont have any appointments. Go to the ER if its an emergency. By weds, I went out and had a Subway turkey sammich. We went to my hometown of Long Island weds. night {wife drove most of the way} and got in about 3am. Woke parents up but they were happy to see me. I lost 12 lbs that week. :D
NASTY NASTY NASTY little bugger. Wifey took kids out all weekend so they didnt get it. Whew...used 2 sick days and a weeks vacation.

Several of the kids from the center that I work have had it. I have been lucky not to get it. I also haven't taken the flu shot either. Some people say that by taking the flu shot you can become more subsectible (sp?) to it (the flu). My grandma and my folks both had their flu shots and my mom and grandma had the flu.

My mother keeps bugging me to get the flu shot since I work with kids but I do not want to get sick.

Mmmmmmmmm.. pondering.....

I sadly, have the damn flu right now... :( So much for that $15.00 FLU SHOT...

Hoping it will pass in the next few days. Its no fun. I havent been to the gym in 2 weeks... :o

Not the worst thing in the world, had it a lot worse when I was a kid, I remember that much... I cant wait to get some real food in me though. Can only live off gatoraid, soup and salttines for so long ...

I agree soup and saltines are not the best food when you are sick. Whenever I eat soup from being sick and I hear that we are having soup at work.. I want to hurl... LOL..

Had my fulfillment of soup to last me a lifetime....unless of course it is cream of corn.... yummyy

I had it pretty bad for two weeks in end of January, (had to do my damn Arrest Control Final Test, sicker than a dog! Sorry that still ****es me off....). Anyway felt a little better the third week, then I felt good for two weeks, and now the crap has snuck back up on me. I think the different strains are so bad right now that they are mutating quickly and coming right back at you. :(

This whole area is rampant with flu, strep and sinus infections right now. All my wife's side have had something for the last month, I got a sinus thing for a week, Dr.'s offices overflowing with all kinds of crud.

Out of hundreds of strains of flu, the AMA Conference tries to decide which dozen or so may hit the USA in the coming year to put into the flu shot... most times the guess wrong, from what I've heard.

If you get the flu virus, you'll get the flu. doesnt matter how much you take care of yourself ahead of time. that may matter in how long the flu lasts tho. that's what the flu shot does...doesnt guarantee you wont get it, but it (supposedly) stops it from being so bad, or lasting so long. i dont think you can get the flu from the shot, but i think you can get a day of feeling "off" afterward...

Washing hands is THE best way of avoiding most of the sicknesses. i got tonsilitis twice this year...it got better for a week and came back. that's my worst childhood illness... i got it every year for MANY years, and my doctor didnt believe in tonsilectomies (sp?).

Sleep, eating right, and keeping in shape definitely can help your immune system. but when something bad hits like the flu, i dont think you have a chance

I don't know how many people here buy into the whole herbal medicine thing, but let me tell y'all, it WORKS!

If you're sick right now, for the next couple days, put as much garlic and cayenne pepper as you can stand, into every meal (well maybe not breakfast...). That, and load yourself up on vitamin C. Also, sweeten your coffee/tea with lots of honey- it's a natural antibiotic. I promise you'll be good to go in a couple days.

Heh, I haven't been to a doctor since 1985! :D

Wow.. that is pretty good that you haven't been to the doctors since '85.

But yu are right about honey and Vitamin C. I drink OJ,take my Vitamin C's. But I have never heard of garlic or pepper to help you.

That is something new I will have to try.

But I have never heard of garlic or pepper to help you.

The garlic helps boost your white blood cell count to fight infection, as well as being a vasco-dialator to lessen blood pressure, and the OC in the cayenne pretty much kills anything in your GI tract that isn't supposed to be there. :D

But I felt like ***** and couldn't get out of bed for a couple days and about ran the ol lady outta the house cause I had it so hot but I was still freezing. Haven't had it yet. Didn't get it last couple of years either. Since high school I have always been regular on getting the flu in Febuary or March. Maybe the flu shots have helped. Worst part is our local hospital hires us to work extra duty security in the emergency room. It is a very good paying gig but I hate this time of year because your stuck there with a ton of sick people. Got so bad last year we all wore masks while working.

Serves me right...I bragged about not having the flu since I was a little girl and I catch some nasty old bug that has me coughing.........chest hurting.....chills, hot flashes.....fever. Well, I broke the fever yesterday...Advil
and rest did the trick. I took some Robitussin formula that usually works on me, but all it did was make me feel like I was not getting enough air......it decongested me too much, I think. It hurts when I cough, I barely have any snot in my chest and head ...so it is raw.....sorry to be so graphic, but that is how I feel. I can breatehr just fine....its just this damn dry cough that hurts my ears and chest....what kind of cough meds should I take?

My daughter handed me the phone this a.m. and said, Call doctor? I almost cried....so sweet. Then she asked for food and Scooby Do; I can do that.

Its not the Flu and I dont feel as bad as I did yesterday.....guess my body is starting to fight harder today.

But I still, WANT MY MOMMY!!!!!!

I've been lucky enough to have evaded any illnesses since the last time I had strep 2 years ago. And that one had my fever up to 104 for about 3 days, My daughter and I had it together. So my boy stayed up all night one night watching over both of us. Bless his heart...every 10 minutes he was taking our temperatures and bringing us cold washclothes for our foreheads.
Not many 8 year olds think that way..

My daughter, almost 20 months old now, got Influenzae A last week...WHEN I WAS ON VACATION!! Luckily it didn't get bad until I was home an able to care for her..Her temp shot up to 104.7..leading us to take her in to ER..
It was horrible...We had to give her Motrine every three hours then Tylenol every 3 hours 24/7 for a day. The doc gave us meds to take also as a preventive measure. Sadie had to take this horrible tasting medicine for 5 days.

Everyone here is getting it..In Iowa the quanity was restricted to high-risk families so my daughter was excluded. I was able to get it because I go into some seriously high risk homes.

I feel for every parent that has to see their kid go through that, or do it themselves. It just sucks.

SEeing your kids so sick and nothing you can do about it is the worst thing in the world!
My son had pnemonia when he was 2, I slept in the humidifier tent with him in the hospital because he wouldn't stay in it without me.
It was miserable in there for me! I can't imagine how he felt.
And when my daughter and I BOTH had 104 fevers, I had to keep her in the bath with the luke warm water for almost 45 min til the temp dropped....screaming the whole time it was horrible. I was crying right along with her. 2am, fever wouldn't go down, hate to rush to the hosp, because let's face it, sometimes it's just a wasted trip. They do exactly the same things you can do at home most times.

Fortunately, we have not had to rush ours to the hospital..she's had Roseola once and that kind of freaked me out. I was still a new mom and all...her ped. thought it as cute that I was so worried. We have a nurse practioner in the family, so we usually just call and ask her what we should do for minor things...no major ones as of today! Its great we we are on vacation and she is there.....all the kids in the family get banged up and she is always there to take care of them , if necessary.

Steph; I am glad your girl is doing better....how scary for you.

Ok, I have to step in and break up the Myths.

1. You will not get the flu from getting the flu shot. The flu shot consists of dead or disabled flu virus. All it does is make your body realize there is a new "invader" and creates antibodies to fight it. Antibodies once created stay around and wait for that virus to come back, that's the purpose of the shot. Some people experience redness or swelling at the injection site, and a slight few experience weakness for a day or two.

2. You are not more susceptible to the flu if you get the shot. You aren't at any LESS risk of getting it either. The flu shot just gives you the antibodies to fight it off quicker. This can result in you getting the flu but your body fighting it off so quickly you didn't even know you had it.

3. Yes they try to estimate the type of flu that will make it to North America. Sometimes they are wrong. Predicting the spread of something like that is so dynamic I can understand the difficulty. But even if they pick the wrong one, the antibodies your body created can change and still protect you somewhat.

I strongly believe in the flu shot, and hope that Avian flu will not act as predicted.

Get the shot!

I skipped last year too - cuz of the shortage, but have been getting it every year since I got smacked down bad in the late 80's. I was lucky enough to work for a company that brought them in!

Getting one this year - I'm considered a first responder, and we are down so many bodies already it's scary.

Had strep for a whole month, although I still managed to somehow pass the latest rounds of physical testing for recruitment. Barfed my guts out after from coughing so hard, but I'm good for another 6 months -whew!

Styx - You've got me stumped.

I don't believe there is a problem with getting your flu shot if you don't have a spleen. I can't reason any problems that would occur if you did.

I did a little research and it's actually highly recommended for people without a spleen to get vaccinated for a variety of things. I believe this is because your spleen is one of the places that your body makes the antibodies used to fight off infections. Without it other places take over but not as effectively, which would mean you probably get sick for longer while your body is fighting it off.
Here's the link (page 36) http://hsc.usf.edu/medicine/surgery/evidence+based+abdominal+injury.pdf

But i'm not a Dr and my advice cannot take the place of one, I would mention it to the Dr or RN giving the flu shot.

In Canada flu shots are free. :)

I believe you can go and get the smallpox vaccine if you fit into the high risk group and are willing to pay for it.

Also I recommend making sure your tetanus shot is up to date. You are suppose to get it every 10 years, if you can't remember getting it within the last 5 years go and get it.

Also go for your Hep A and/or B, and meningitis, pneumococcus (pnuemonia) if you are so eager.

According to Health Canada Pneumococcal is recommended as fitting into the high risk catagory for people without spleens.

My hubby and I caught the "Preschool Flu" from my daughter 2 years ago ~ damn near killed us all !!! Young children carry the hardiest flu germs I've ever seen.

I haven't been sick the last 2 years. To keep from getting sick ~ I wash my hands regularly, I take a multi-vitamin every day, and take an "Airborne" tablet if I become exposed to sick people. So far ~ so good.

In my old office, I worked on people within a very confined space. During flu season, they would come into see me while sick and most times, I just sent them home. I wish they would have just cancelled their appointment and stayed home in the FIRST place !!!

Some of our neighbors have had a flu bug going around in their families ~ we have been lucky thus far.

I don't know why, but it seems last winter, and this winter, I get a heavy chest cold. I ignore it, it isn't painful, but coughing all that stuff up is annoying. It only started happening when I moved up here in Kenosha. Had the Flu, too, for the first time in 7 years. :( Stupid people in a public place coughing and hacking up without covering their mouths.

I'm constantly in contact with sick people who don't cover their mouths when they cough, sneeze all over the place, and hand me their snotty kleenexes to throw out. Unfortunetly my job does not permit me to wash my hands every 5 minutes, and even if I wanted to I couldn't do a good job of it as our sinks only have one temperature- cool, and our soap dispensers are always empty.

Thanks...I dont think there would be a problem with me getting it as much as a problem with me NOT getting it.
With my daughter in school now, I probably should do it.
Better do so before they run out!
